Kristofer Boreland - Hit & Run - Sault Ste Marie, ON (June 2000)
« on: September 24, 2007, 12:24:36 PM »

On the 21st of June 2000 at approximately 23:18 hours Kristofer Boreland, age 21 was at a Bawating High School graduation party at the Hiawatha Lodge with his girlfriend. Boreland left the party alone and was seen by witnesses walking southbound on Landslide Road . It was dark at the time, raining and there was very little artificial illumination on the road.  Several witnesses reported that they had nearly struck Mr. Boreland with their vehicle due to the fact that he was dressed in dark clothing and the weather at the time. At some point Kristofer Boreland was struck by a motor vehicle on Landslide Road . The driver of the vehicle that struck Boreland failed to remain at the scene and did not report the collision to the authorities.

Kristofer Boreland was discovered by other motorists lying across the road and they contacted Police and Ambulance. Paramedics attended and treated Boreland at the scene. He was transported to the Sault Area Hospitals where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officers of the Sault Ste Marie Police Service attended the scene and commenced an investigation into this fatality. The scene was examined for physical evidence but revealed little as to a possible suspect vehicle. Over the past seven years, numerous leads, tips, vehicle examinations and interviews have been conducted. All of these sources were exhausted but the case still remains unsolved.

The family of Kristofer Boreland remains hopeful that the person responsible will feel compelled to notify Police and provide closure for them, which has evaded them for the past seven years.

Anyone with information on this case no matter how insignificant is asked to contact the Case Coordinator, Detective Sergeant John Zambusi at 949-6300 extension 264 or or if you wish to remain anonymous you may contact Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 8477.

On September 13, 2000 the Sault Ste Marie Police Services Board authorized a $10,000 reward for public information that results in the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the fatal collision involving Kristofer Boreland.

A number of photos of Kristofer Boreland and the accident scene are attached.

It sounds like this really was just a tragic accident. It is too bad that the person responsible failed to stay at the scene. They probably wouldnt have gotten even a ticket in the matter and the family would have closure.
