Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating after two people found human remains in a wooded area in Sydney, N.S., Saturday morning.

Police say around 10:30 a.m., the witnesses were out for a walk along Ash Street when they spotted what they believed to be either clothing or human remains.

Residents who live in the area tell CTV Atlantic it was a 10-year-old girl and her friend who made the discovery.

"It's very unusual. It's a very quiet street. Everybody is friends, everybody knows each other. It's the kind of neighbourhood you can rely on your neighbours to help you with something," says resident Stephen McGrath. "It's a great street. Lots of kids, lots of families, so it was quite surprising to hear something like that on the street."
Members of the Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene, along with Medical Examiner crews.

The remains will be sent to Halifax for an autopsy scheduled for Monday.

There are currently four men listed as missing in the area, but police say they haven't determined whether the remains are connected to any of those cases, or if foul play was involved.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
