Police in Victoriaville treating woman's death as suspected homicide

A woman found seriously injured Wednesday morning in an apartment in Victoriaville, about 200 kilometres east of Montreal, has died from her injuries.

Provincial police say they have a man in custody and he has met with investigators.

They are treating the death of 22-year-old Judith Elemond as a suspected homicide.

Sûreté du Québec officers were called to the apartment on L'aqueduc Street around 5 a.m., where they found the woman.

The major crimes unit is analyzing the scene and questioning people in the neighbourhood.

Police are not releasing any further details for the moment.

Neighbours told Radio-Canada that the woman was new to the neighbourhood.

Man charged with first-degree murder in death of Victoriaville woman

A 24-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of Judith Élémond in Victoriaville.

Elemond, 22, was found seriously injured in her apartment on l'Aqueduc Street around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

She was taken to hospital, but died later in the day.

Jean-François Toupin Houle was arrested in Trois-Rivières Wednesday afternoon and was to appear before a judge via videoconference to be formally charged this morning. His address is listed in Drummondville.

Élémond was the mother of baby girl who turned one on the day of Élémond's death. In a Facebook post, the baby's father, Dave Blondeau, said the date will now be a difficult one.

"You left too quickly for a better place," he said.

Élémond's mother, Edith Papineau, also took to Facebook to express her grief.

"She as a marvellous mother," she said.

"I have rage in my heart at this incomprehensible situation."

Neighbours said Élémond was new to the neighbourhood. It's not clear if Élémond knew Toupin Houle.
