Minto Deputy Mayor Kris Austin says the search for Mitchell Veenhuis did locate something of interest Sunday that may help RCMP with its investigation.

"They did find something that may help police," said Austin. "I can't say more than that."

Austin was one of 127 searchers that registered to assist in the search for the missing 22-year-old. They include members of Minto Fire Department, RCMP and staff from the department of natural resources.

"At this time we have concluded our search for the day. We had 12 registered teams that were out and did a very thorough search of the area and the region. And although at this time we did not find Mitchell's car, nor did we find Mitchell, we did find items that may help the RCMP in their investigation."

Veenhuis went missing Oct. 14 after he left his residence at 8:30 p.m. He owns a blue 2012 Ford Fusion with New Brunswick license plate JEK-814.

Veenhuis is described as approximately 6 feet 2 inches, weighing 160 pounds, with short, light brown hair and blue eyes.

Search crews think it is possible he's within a 20 km radius of his home. Sunday's search focused on an area near where Veenhuis lived in Clarks Corner, along Route 690.

Searchers spent the day combing back roads and mining trails. The area has hundreds of old mining roads and each area was marked off after it was checked.

Boats using underwater cameras also searched the waters of Grand Lake for any sign of Veenhuis.
