Kevin Rubletz to stand trial on murder charge in Jessica Newman's death
Trial date will be set in August

By Meghan Grant, CBC News  Posted: Jun 20, 2016 1:08 PM MT| Last Updated: Jun 22, 2016 3:54 PM MT

The man accused of murdering 24-year-old Jessica Newman — who was missing for two months in 2015 before her body was discovered — will stand trial on second-degree murder.

It comes after a six-day preliminary inquiry was held for 31-year-old Kevin Rubletz, who had been in conflict with the victim over the custody of their son.

The evidence presented at the preliminary inquiry is protected by a publication ban.

The case started out as a missing persons investigation.

Newman was last seen on March 10, 2015, in the southeast community of Forest Lawn. A work crew discovered her body in a ditch in a rural area north of the city on May 4.

A trial date will be set on August 19.

Why would Jessica get in a car with this man??? I just don't understand these females who are going through custody battles and if they know he is violent,  just keep away and get a restraining order. It doesn't help much, but then you can call the police and say he is bothering you. And at these times, a woman filing for custody should not be walking alone at night or be in any place by herself, always be accompanied by someone until the matter is dealt with in court. So many times this has happened, it is more of a control issue then anything. If the person loved their children, they certainly would not resort to murder. It doesn't make sense to murder the mother of your child/children. Because you definitely will not get away with it. A senseless loss of a lovely woman, for nothing. Now the child will have no mother and no father. What a pathetic future he has set for this little child. To grow up knowing his mom was murdered and his father will serve life in jail for it. God bless that child and he/she will need a life time of love and caring. It will be a heartbreak for the little child right now, because he lost his mom and will probably never forget the pain of the loss.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Calling police does no good because they can't do anything until it's too late. Sure they can keep an eye on the perp but that is all. A restraining order is a piece of paper and in the heat of the moment it really does no good and costs a lot.
Finally this comes to trial; it's been a long wait for all involved. I hope it's a quick trial so family can finally put it all behind them and start to heal.

Thanks for updating us Debbie. I wonder why he would choose "jury" for a case that was so public. Perhaps his lawyer is already preparing an appeal and will try to use "tainted jury" in the appeal?

Why oh why, could'nt this couple continue on in sharing their son through visitations?

So often, we see mother's murdered when they go for full custody of their children.

This is not to say that Jessica was ready to be a full time Mother, and perhaps the judge would not have given her full custody.

Now, the little boy no longer has a Mother, and will possibly lose his Dad.

This little boy, has lost so much!!

As he grows up, this sad story will eventually become full knowledge to him, and he will carry this around within him for the rest of his life.
