Hookers' attacker guilty of murder

A Barrie man who attacked and raped a local prostitute three years ago was sentenced to life in prison last Friday for the 2008 murder of a Guelph prostitute.

Christopher David McDonald, 38, was on trial before a jury in Guelph for the past month, charged in the first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault of Corinne Burns.

His life sentence means he can apply for parole in 25 years.

The nude and battered body of the 29-year-old crack-addicted prostitute, who had mental illness, was found by a child in some bushes in a park near a public school in Guelph on May 27, 2008, likely two days after she was murdered.

McDonald was a key suspect in the murder, and Guelph police had him under surveillance when he moved to Barrie and attacked a woman here a year after the murder.

While under surveillance, police lost sight of McDonald when he walked behind a Mary Street home near the downtown liquor store with the woman on July 14, 2009.

Surveillance officers caught up to McDonald moments later as he was pulling his pants up at the scene. The woman lay half-naked and still, covered in blood.

The Barrie woman, who was also addicted to drugs and was developmentally challenged, suffered a broken nose, cheekbones and teeth as well as several bruises and lacerations to her face, head and body.

While McDonald denied the murder of the Guelph woman, he pleaded guilty to the vicious attack in the Barrie case and Crown attorney Lynn Saunders now wants him to be labelled as a dangerous offender and put away with no chance for applying for parole.

Even before the murder verdict, Saunders insisted McDonald is a danger to society, citing previous violent attacks on women.

In 1997, McDonald was sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated assault in Toronto.

In the 1997 incident, McDonald was a manager of a Pizza Hut franchise.

When a 55-year-old woman went into the washroom, McDonald came up behind her and struck her in the head repeatedly with a rolling pin. She received a broken arm and 80 staples in the head.

She managed to escape after she grabbed a potted plant and threw it at the store window to attract attention from people outside.

In yet another incident, McDonald was convicted after assaulting a woman in the washroom at the former SkyDome in Toronto in 2001.

While the Guelph jury that convicted McDonald of murder never knew about his lengthy violent history, it did know about the Barrie conviction - a point on which his defence lawyer is filing for an appeal.

Lawyer Angela McLeod, of Barrie, insists the jury was swayed after learning the details of the Barrie case and came up with a biased verdict.
"That information was so prejudicial to the jury," McLeod said.

While McDonald's semen was found on the body of the Guelph woman, McLeod insists that only proves he had sex with her, not that he murdered her.

"They didn't prove anything other than the fact that Christopher McDonald had sexual contact with a working prostitute. That's it, nothing more," McLeod said, noting she has already filed the appeal for her client.

McDonald will be back in Barrie court on Friday where dates for a lengthy dangerous offender hearing will be set.

It appears that this guy will be declared a dangerous offender, although the final decision will not be announced until later this month. Both the Crown attorney and defense agree that he should be declared a  dangerous offender. It's the "other sentencing options" that will "hopefully" help him become a contributing member of society that I don't like.

Who's going to make sure he takes his medication?

Seems like people want to do everything possible to make concessions for this man rather than lock him up. Why is it so important he be integrated into society? Who needs him? It also sounds like the doctor is making excuses for his violent behavior. Saying someone is sexually aroused by rape is a slippery slope to saying someone just happens to be sexually aroused by raping children, torture, murder, sex with a corpse or any number of social deviant things.
