Police in Moncton have called in the major crime unit after a passerby found human remains in a narrow field behind an apartment complex near Wheeler Boulevard on Saturday afternoon.

A man discovered the remains while out for a walk near the Church Street overpass just before 4 p.m., according to police.

"They just happened to come along the human remains while walking and then they notified police," said RCMP Sgt. Daniel Landry.

Police are remaining tight-lipped on any details surrounding the grisly discovery.

RCMP said they're trying to identify the remains and they still don't know the circumstances surrounding the person's death.

"It's too early in the investigation to determine that. The autopsy will help determine the identity of the body as well as the circumstance of the death," said Landry.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Sadly there are many missing in NB... I hope they figure out who this man is soon.

Lou, do we have all the missing Moncton cases on the New Brunswick thread, do you know?  I hadn't realized there were several that could apply to this case. That is sad.

A report in this morning's Telegraph Journal stated it had been determined that the remains were those of a male and, since the remains had skeletonized, they may have been there for quite some time.  It would appear that no further details were available or perhaps forthcoming at least at this time.

The family of Romeo Cloutier who was reported missing Sept 12th 2012 was informed yesterday that the remains found were NOT Romeo's.

Had we known anything about the man they identified?

It appears from what I could tell he had not been reported missing so that, in itself, seems a little strange (at least to me) since he would have been deceased quite a while already.  One would think someone, somewhere, would have missed him.  The local reports only say it is being treated as a suspicious death - they have apparently been unable to determine the actual cause.
