Man arrested in Toronto for Victoria murder

A man arrested in Ontario on Tuesday is the suspect in a nearly three-year-old murder case in Victoria.

On Nov. 5, 2008, the body of Nicholas John Fantasia, 35, was found in the water of the Inner Harbour, underneath the docks at Hyack Adventures’ float plane terminal.

Fantasia was a member of the street community and a drug user.

Victoria police will not release how Fantasia died.

The investigation was transferred to Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crimes Unit soon after the body’s discovery and in May of this year, VIIMCU deemed Fantasia’s death a homicide and issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of Ryan Demorest, 25.

Demorest was arrested by Toronto police in Scarborough Tuesday and charged with second-degree murder.

He will arrive in Victoria by the middle of next week in the custody of sheriffs.

VicPD Insp. John Craig said it’s not out of the ordinary for cases to be solved so long after they happened.

“It’s not really unlikely at all. We don’t put files to bed until they’re solved. This does happen quite often where court cases are becoming more complex, so evidence that is needed to support a charge is becoming more complex.”

The major crimes unit worked on the case with Ontario Provincial Police’s repeat offender and parole enforcement squad.

Man accused in death of Nicholas Fantasia is charged with assault

By Louise Dickson, timescolonist.com

A man arrested in Ontario last year and charged with the second-degree murder of Nicholas John Fantasia will appear in court today on a charge of assault causing bodily harm.

It is expected Ryan Demorest will plead guilty to the charge, said his lawyer, Anthony Robinson.

Demorest was committed on the charge of assault causing bodily harm on Tuesday, after a one-day preliminary inquiry into Fantasia's death in Victoria provincial court.

In July 2011, Demorest was arrested in Scarborough, Ont., by major-crime detectives who believed he was responsible for the death of 35-year-old Fantasia, whose body was pulled from the Inner Harbour near the Regency Hotel, on Nov. 5, 2008.

At the time, police said the body had been in the water for several weeks and there were no obvious signs of trauma.

Investigators with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit declared the death suspicious.

In May, they said they were investigating a homicide.

The Crown approved charges and police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Demorest's arrest. He was apprehended with the help of Ontario Provincial Police's repeat offender and parole enforcement squad.

Demorest was living in Victoria in 2008. He has had several contacts with Victoria police and police in the Lower Mainland.

He was a talented skateboarder and studied Buddhism and other religions. He practised martial arts and had a particular affinity for kung fu.

"He will be greatly missed by his older brother Phil, his mother Jean, her sisters and their children, and by his nine-year-old daughter Sylvia and her mother, Elizabeth," said the post on the memorial group. "Nick was a generous, loving man who loved and provided for his friends and family as much as he could. He worked so hard, when he left jobs they would have to hire three people to fill his place."

Victoria police said in 2008 that Fantasia was of no fixed address and was a member of the street community.

This may not be him if he was arrested for murder in 2011.

It may not be him Debbie but I have a strong feeling it is..I think he plead guilty to assault causing bodily harm in the Fantasia case and was probably never prosecuted for the murder , due to no reasonable expectation of conviction.  I could be wrong but this fella was arrested in Scarborough for the Fantasia case back in 2011, so he is not unfamiliar with Ontario and Peterborough is probably little more than an hour from Scarborough. The age is right on.  This guy looks like he might be a  career criminal with very violent tendencies.  Hope they consider dangerous offender status before he ends up doing worse .
