Taken from the link above:

16 years after murder of young woman, Alberta RCMP continue to hunt for killer(s)

The murder took place 16 years ago, but Alberta RCMP say they've never given up on the investigation and they've never been closer to the truth.

Adrienne McColl was found murdered in a rancher's field near Nanton, approximately 85 kilometres south of Calgary, on Feb. 17, 2002.

She was 21 at the time of her death.

The RCMP major crimes division, based in Calgary, has been investigating recent tips and re-examining previous ones, and says new technologies have led to new leads.

Spokesperson Cpl. Hal Turnbull wasn't able to get into many specifics on the investigation, but did say investigators were originally unable to obtain evidence of criminal wrongdoing from some of the items found at the crime scene in 2002.

"We have been able to submit some of those items for analysis again," he said. "And this time, given the advances in the technology, we're getting some evidence which is allowing the investigation to move forward."

Someone might know something

Turnbull said they are sure someone in the community has information that could answer their remaining questions.

"Time has passed and we find often, when these kind of investigations do take this long to progress, there are people out there who originally did not come forward to police because they believe that whatever details or knowledge they have in their own minds may be insignificant or inconsequential," he said.

"But given that time has progressed, they've had time to think about it and it's oftentimes that what they think is insignificant is actually very key to an investigation."

He said investigators are eager to speak with friends, colleagues or schoolmates, or anyone that would have information on her whereabouts in and around Valentine's Day 2002.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP, their local police service or anonymously at  Crime Stoppers  .

Just a curiosity:

I noticed while reading the above article that Adrienne (21) went missing from Nanton, around Valentine's Day 2002. Melissa Letain (24) went missing from Edmonton, right around Valentine's Day in 1987. I was curious as to where Nanton is in relation to Edmonton, so did a search and found out that it takes approx. 4 hours (give or take) to drive between these two places.

There were some wondering on Melissa's thread, if the date of her murder could have meant something. One can never rule anything out. These murders occurred 15 years and not all that many miles apart.

I was thinking the same thing, Debbie.
The date...Valentines...made me wonder if there is  a connection.

Melissa. Difficult to see in the picture but I thought there were other pictures which showed her hair as a dark ash blonde.

Police zeroed in on Adrienne?s boyfriend, who took off to Ottawa soon after Adrienne?s disappearance. He admits taking the fathers car and leaving it at the airport.
But...the police did not have enough evidence at the time....new technology, though...I believe I read that they will get results back in the next few weeks.
One article I read was the Calgary Sun....there is several on the web at this time.

Quebec man faces 2nd-degree murder charge in 16-year-old cold case involving Adrienne McColl
St?phane Parent, 49, ordered returned to Alberta to face charge in 2002 case
David Bell ? CBC News ? Posted: Feb 19, 2018 8:25 AM MT | Last Updated: a few seconds ago

A Quebec man has been arrested in the 2002 death of Adrienne McColl, whose body was found in a rancher's field near Nanton, about 85 kilometres south of Calgary.
Gatineau police arrested St?phane Parent, 49, on Saturday morning as he was on his way to work. He is facing a second-degree murder charge in McColl's death.

Parent's lawyer, Jean-Pierre Rancourt, said his client appeared before a judge in Montreal via video conference and has been ordered to appear in Alberta provincial court.
Who killed Adrienne McColl? 16 years later, RCMP say they're getting closer to the truth

Rancourt said Parent will be taken to Calgary on Monday for a Tuesday hearing. Rancourt said his client was shocked at the arrest, maintains his innocence and will plead not guilty.
Supt. Garrett Woolsey of the Southern Alberta District RCMP said the charge is bittersweet.
"There's two sides to it. One you are thrilled that as a professional all your work has come to fruition and you now have a case you can take to trial, but you also know the other side. There is a family that has been deeply, deeply impacted by this throughout the past 16 years," Woolsey told reporters at a news conference held Monday in the Calgary area.

"You are almost living the file with the family, so at this point my thoughts go out to Adrienne McColl's family at this time."

Woolsey said McColl and Parent worked at the same Calgary bar in 2002 and there was a relationship, but he wouldn't describe the nature of it.

Parent was a person of interest at the time, but bought a one-way ticket to Ottawa days after McColl's body was found. Police believe Parent has lived in Ontario and Quebec ever since. He has family in Gatineau.
Family welcomes arrest

Woolsey said the family welcomed the development.

"They know that it's the next step, that we are not done yet. There is still a court process to go through. Nothing will bring the loved one back, but there is some satisfaction that something has moved forward here."

The RCMP major crimes division, based in Calgary, said last week there was new information in the 16-year-old case.
Investigators said they had been using new technologies to test old evidence gathered from the scene.

"We have been able to submit some of those items for analysis again," Cpl. Hal Turnbull said Feb. 12.

"And this time, given the advances in the technology, we're getting some evidence which is allowing the investigation to move forward."

Police said 184 investigators worked on the file over 16 years.
McColl's body was found Feb. 17, 2002. She was 21.

Parant would have been 18 at the time of Melissa's death. Perhaps during the trial more info will come out and we may find out if he was ever in the Edmonton area at the time.

It will be interesting to know where Parent was when Melissa was murdered in Edmonton.
Maybe he worked at the mall...
I too, hope more info as to his whereabouts growing up, comes out.
