Miramichi man jailed 5 years for sex assaults
Published Friday December 30th, 2011

MIRAMICHI - A 65-year-old Miramichi man received five years in the penitentiary last week for sexual assaults he committed against three little girls from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s.

Emile Allen Vienneau, 65, of Miramichi sat in the front row of the courtroom at Miramichi provincial court. He seemed frail and leaned heavily on a walker. His mouth was open throughout the sentencing and he appeared to have no expression.

John Calver represented Vienneau and Jean Guy Savoie represented the Crown before Judge John Friel.

Under the provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada, the victims of the sexual assaults cannot be identified. One of the victims came forward in 2009 and told police she had been sexually assaulted numerous times when she was between the ages of seven and 11, with the abuse ranging from fondling to sexual intercourse.

"This would have happened 60 to 70 times, until she was 11 years old," Savoie told the court on Dec. 20.

When police investigated the sexual abuse allegations, Vienneau confessed.

The judge handed Vienneau three years for the count of rape on the first victim, one year for indecent assault against the second victim and one year for the indecent assault against a third victim.

He prohibited Vienneau from possessing firearms, ordered a DNA sample be provided and ordered his information be placed on the sex offender registry.
