Officers are asking for the public's help locating a man who was last seen in Manitoba last week while driving to Saskatchewan.

James Joseph Gallagher, 71, was driving his 2004 red Ford Ranger sidestep pickup truck with Saskatchewan plate 596 GMT.

RCMP said it is out of character for Gallagher to not have contact with his family and relatives are concerned for his well-being.

Investigators determined that he was seen in a gas station on Highway 10 in Mafeking, Man. on Nov. 2 around 10:30 a.m. He was asking for directions on how to return to Saskatchewan.

He appeared disoriented and his speech impediment was noticeable, said RCMP.

Officers are asking residents in Mafeking, along with in Melfort, Tisdale and Carrot River, Sask., to be on the lookout for Gallagher.

He was wearing a plaid jacket and beige hat and had several days beard growth.

Anyone with information on his location is asked to contact Nipawin RCMP at 306-862-6270, or people can also contact their local RCMP detachment.

Something wrong with this picture. The man is in Flin Flon and asks directions to Flin Flon and no one is concerned enough to have him rest for awhile until they summon some help?

Two sightings of missing man
Posted on 11/08/2011, 10:47 am, by mySteinbach.ca
Investigators have confirmed two additional sightings of James Joseph Gallagher, a 71-year-old man that was reported missing last week.

On November 3, 2011, at 6pm, James Gallagher stopped at a gas station in Cranberry Portage, Manitoba and purchased gas. He told the attendant that he was lost and was trying to get back to White Fox, Saskatchewan. Gallagher did not appear distressed, but told the gas station employee that he was tired. He left the gas station with a map, drawn by the gas station employee, detailing how to get to Flin Flon and the Hanson Lake Highway.

Early Friday morning, November 4, 2011, Gallagher was spotted driving in the community of Flin Flon Manitoba near Tyrell Lake on Highway 106. He had asked someone in the community for directions to Flin Flon.

Investigators are continuing their search for James Gallagher and searches have been conducted along the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border and the Hanson Lake Highway.

RCMP are asking residents in the area surrounding Melfort (SK), Tisdale (SK), Carrot River (SK), Smeaton (SK), Candle Lake (SK), Prince Albert (SK), and Flin Flon (MB) to be on the look out for James Gallagher and his 2004 red, Ford Ranger, sidestep truck.

If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Mr. Gallagher, please contact the Nipawin RCMP Detachment at 306-862-6270 or your local RCMP Detachment.

I wonder if he always had a speech impediment or if it was new. Sounds like he could have had a mini stroke. He was tired but seemed to keep driving. I hope he didn't fall asleep at the wheel and drive off into some deep water or fall prey to untoward persons. :'(

A missing elderly man has been spotted in Manitoba, and cops are asking anyone who sees him to help them get him home.

James Joseph Gallagher, 71, first came to police attention Nov. 1 when he was suspected of drunk driving. He wasn't impaired and police let him go, but they're now concerned for his safety and say he may be disoriented.

The Saskatchewan man has stopped in small westerly communities asking for directions home to White Fox, Sask. Police are conducting a search for him but put out a call for tips on his whereabouts Monday.

In response, a Cranberry Portage gas station employee told police Gallagher had stopped in on Nov. 3 asking or directions.

He left with a map drawn by the employee detailing how to get to Flin Flon and the Hanson Lake Highway. When asked how he was doing, told the staffer he was OK but tired.

Gallagher stopped again on the route early Friday Nov. 4 to ask for directions to Flin Flon.

Police said he was first spotted in Manitoba Nov. 2 in Mafeking, also asking for directions.

Gallager is reported to have a noticeable speech impediment and several days’ worth of beard growth.

Police are asking people near the Saskatchewan border to be on the lookout for Gallagher, who is driving a red Ford Ranger with licence plate 596 GMT.

They say it's out of character for Gallagher to be out of touch with his family for so long.

He's described as about 5-foot-6 and 140 lbs., with short grey hair and glasses.

If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Mr. Gallagher, please contact the Nipawin RCMP Detachment at 306-862-6270 or your local RCMP detachment.

This is awful and so scary , it appears that this man may have alzmers , and was in the early stages and it now kicked off more.  Imagine how scared that poor man is, knowing where he is trying to get but keep getting lost especially if it is a place he should now like the back of his hand.  Hope they find him before something happens. Hope he seeks medical attention wonder if they have checked the hospitals in the area. My heart goes out to him , I know what it is like to be lost in a place you should know.

Family members of a missing Saskatchewan man are making a public plea for any information on the whereabouts of their loved one.

"We want to bring him home. Let's be his eyes, let's be his ears, let's be his speech. Speak up for him, look for him. Bring him home safe," James Gallagher's sister Marlene Morrissey said at news conference Friday.

RCMP ground and aerial crews have been searching for Gallagher for more than a week. The 71-year-old went missing from his hometown of White Fox 11 days ago. RCMP said Gallagher became disoriented when driving near the Nipawin-area community.

Gallagher was last seen near Flin Flon, Man., on Nov. 4.

His family said Gallagher can't read and his speech impediment makes conversation difficult. He also cannot use a map.

"By this time he is upset, he is afraid, he is lost and he doesn't really know where to turn," Morrissey said.

Gallagher was expected to return to his farm near White Fox, but he never made it. Since then, RCMP said Gallagher has travelled thousands of miles in his red 2004 Ford Ranger. Their search has now expanded beyond the Manitoba border.

"He is lost, he's genuinely lost," said RCMP Staff Sgt. Barry Thomas.

Thomas said Gallagher is not using credit or debit cards and is instead using cheques to pay for fuel - a fact that is making him harder to track. He estimates RCMP are at least five days behind the missing man.

RCMP are asking anyone who encounters Gallagher not to let him leave and to call their local police detachment immediately.

Hope and pray he is found soon,  I am sure he feels like a fish out of water.  Out of his comfort zone and feeling confused and perhaps not able to utilize the help he may recieve.  Hope all the people keep their eyes open for this man.

I'm posting Mr. Gallagher's facebook site since it isn't an off base site:

Missing Person James Joseph Gallagher
The last confirmed sighting, as of noon Saturday November 12, was at 5:00am last Sunday in Creighton,SK. James asked for directions home and was told to go south on Highway 106. (The Hanson Lake Road)

Police said Mr. Gallagher is writing cheques for all his needs rather than using cc or atm card so it makes it that much more difficult to trace him. Perhaps he can't remember the pin numbers. Last noted cheque was for gas in Flin Flon.

Oh okay got it thanks Sap god this man must also be terrified.  Imagine not being able to find your way home.  I am praying he decided to take a few days and rest up in a hotel to calm down and find his way home. A true Nightmare.

YW. I hope they are checking hospitals too although if he has a cheque book with him, if he ended up at a hospital somebody there would have checked his belongings and called for him, I hope. What a fright.

Has there been any movement on this case? I find it shocking that 5 months goes by and no sign of him, or his red Ford ranger.

One article stated there was a large search from where he went missing and up to Flin Flon where he had been spotted and from there the K of C joined the search, to no avail. His bank account apparently hasn't been used since Nov 6/11.
The poor man! He had to have been frightened in his confusion of not being able to find his way home, even with directions from a few people he asked. How can anyone miss a red truck like his?
We really need to be mindful when a senior stops and asks us for directions ... take the time to find out what frame of mind they are in and not just letting them drive off if they sound confused or bewildered.
So many people also don't bother with the news casts on the radio when driving, and many don't follow missing persons cases. How tragic this man was lost among many people!
