Family hopes for return of missing man
BY LANA HAIGHT, THE STARPHOENIX DECEMBER 16, 2010

A Regina family is hoping a missing persons alert issued by Saskatoon police will result in a Christmas reunion.

"We love him and would love for him to come home for Christmas," said Brenda Evans in a telephone interview from her home in Regina.

Evans hasn't seen her older brother Ricky Riopel since they celebrated Christmas together with their parents two years ago. The 50-year-old man, born and raised in Regina, moved to Saskatoon in the 1990s. He was living with a woman, who called Evans this summer to say Riopel was missing. Evans filed a missing persons report with Saskatoon police in August.

On Wednesday, police called on the public for help in finding Riopel.

"They are entering another Christmas season without knowing where he is or what happened to him," said Saskatoon Police Service spokesperson Alyson Edwards.

"For them, it's significant because that was when they last saw him even though there have been other confirmed sightings and agencies that have dealt with him since that time."

Riopel was last seen in October 2009 at a health-care facility in Moose Jaw where he was being treated in a detox unit for his addiction to alcohol, says Evans. Police have not been able to find any trace of financial or other activity since he left the detox program. While Evans lost contact with her brother after their family Christmas in 2008, she assumed Riopel was busy living his life and working as a labourer in Saskatoon.

Evans is particularly concerned about Riopel being found because their mother is in hospital.

"She always ask about him, 'Did you find him yet?' " said Evans.

"We miss him dearly. We all do."

Riopel is described as 5-foot-6, and 160 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about Riopel is asked to call Saskatoon police at 975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The StarPhoenix December 15, 2010

Saskatoon police are asking for help in finding a 50-year-old man missing for more than a year.

Ricky Riopel was last seen in October 2009 at a health care facility in Moose Jaw, says a news release issued by Saskatoon Police Service. Born and raised in Regina, Riopel moved to Saskatoon in the 1990s where he worked as a labourer, says his sister Brenda Evans. She hasn’t seen him since they celebrated Christmas together with their parents two years ago.

“We miss him dearly. We all do. We love him and would love for him to come home for Christmas,” said Evans in a telephone interview from her home in Regina.

Evans reported her brother missing in August when his former girlfriend contacted her. Evans had assumed that Riopel was busy living his life and working in Saskatoon and was surprised to learn he was missing.

Riopel is described as 5-foot-6, weighing 160 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about Riopel is asked to call Saskatoon Police at 975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
