Mom wants answers
Posted By TAMARA CHERRY, QMI AGENCY
It was 2:30 p.m. on a Thursday when Dorothy Fowlie's daughter came back into her life via two homicide detectives knocking on her west-end Toronto door.

Seven years after moving from Toronto to Bracebridge, 32-year-old Samantha Collins' remains were found at a Bracebridge cottage July 5 -- a victim of homicide whose family is now desperate for answers.

"You just go from being in agony, pain, to anger, to helplessness. Like the emotions and the feelings, they're so messed up, you don't know from one minute to the next how you're going to feel," Fowlie said Saturday with Collins' younger sister, Nicole, by her side.
"This has changed my life forever. She was mine for 32 years."

Investigators haven't said how long Collins had been dead before her body was found at the Merrick Drive cottage. Her family doesn't even know if she had been reported missing.

"We didn't really know many of her friends out there. Samantha didn't really get close to people as friends.

"She didn't trust a lot of people. I think it was just her way of protecting herself," Fowlie said.

The "free spirit" who suffered from epilepsy moved to Bracebridge shortly before having her second son.

The last time her family spoke to her was in January, 2007, when Nicole called to wish her a happy 29th birthday.

That was three years after the sisters made headlines for gathering more than 500 people to protest the closing of the Bracebridge emergency room. Thanks to them, it is still open, their mother said.

"She was never one to care about what people said about her, ever. She could care less; she lived her life for her," Nicole said.

"And her smile-- what an amazing smile," her mother said. "You know, she had such amazing skin and hair. People used to ask her if they could touch her hair, it was just so beautiful."

Nicole said whenever she tried calling her sister's cellphone, it would ring endlessly without an answering machine.

The pair repeated the police appeal for anyone with information to call investigators at 705-789-5551 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

"It's hard not getting any answers," Nicole said.

"Scenarios play in your head and you just... it's just really hard."

Orillia man charged in Muskoka murder
Woman's body found near Bracebridge cottage last July

An Orillia man has been charged with the murder of 29-year-old Samantha Collins, whose body was discovered near a Bracebridge cottage last July.

Ian Charles Borbely, 35, has been charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains.

Bracebridge OPP Const. Jim Reading said the accused was arrested during a vehicle stop Tuesday morning. He said location of the arrest would not be released because that information is crucial to the ongoing investigation.

The charges come following a nine-month investigation led by the Ontario Provincial Police criminal investigations branch and the Muskoka crime unit.

Bracebridge OPP officers responded to a Merrick Drive address on July 5 after a property caretaker found human remains.

Is this true? Four years? Did anyone report her missing? If she was gone that long, who watched her children? Where are they?

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested Ian Charles Borbely and charged him with second degree murder of Samantha Collins. According to police Samantha Collins body was found last summer in the Wood Lakes area which is close to Bracebridge Ontario and it was apparent that it was not a natural death. The OPP are unsure how long ago Samantha was killed and it is possible the body may have been there for up to four years. Ian Charles Borbely was arrested and charged with second degree murder and indignity to human remains.

I was so happy an arrest was finally made when it was.  I have been friends with Dorthy her mother for over twenty years.  And knew sam as a young girl.  There are many many horrific things that happened in regard to this murder, the really sad thing is the Mom thought the daughter just wasn't contacting her back and wasn't answering her phone, then to find out all that time and she had been dead.  Just heart breaking?

Borbely Denied Bail in Samantha Collins Murder Case
Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:46 CFBG

Bail for accused murderer Ian Charles Borbely has been denied in the Samantha Collins murder case. The ruling came down in Bracebridge Court this afternoon after the last of numerous bail hearings that were held throughout the summer. The ruling was based on hours of witness testimony and evidence given in the hearings, the nature of which is still covered by an ongoing publication ban. Borbely, who remains in police custody, stands charged with the second degree murder of Collins, a former resident of Bracebridge. He's also been charged with causing an indignity to a body. Collins' body was discovered at a cottage property in Oakley Ward last year. Police arrested Borbely on May 3rd, following a nine month investigation. From here, the case is set to continue in Provincial Court in Bracebridge on September 27th.

I wondered about the "indignity to the body" within the charges.

Moving on -

Thanks eyes for this update. It is, indeed, very sad. My thoughts and prayers are for those left behind that have to piece together the puzzle and stay the course. Especially when trials are involved. It must just seem never ending and very hard to heal from what is already devastating news.
