Ontario man charged with online luring

TORONTO - An Ajax, Ont., man is accused of spending hours in front of the computer, luring girls from online chat rooms before "exposing himself" over webcam.

The 36-year-old man was arrested Thursday after a nearly three-month investigation that involved undercover officers posing as girls using online chat rooms, Durham Regional Police Sgt. Nancy van Rooy said Friday.

Investigators allege the man sought out girls in the "10 to 14 age group," before engaging in sexual conversations and "exposing himself" over webcam, van Rooy said.

"He never pretended to be (of the) female gender. He was always male and in some cases (allegedly) exposed himself to prove (it)," van Rooy said.

There was no indication the man pretended to be younger than his 36 years, Det. Randy Norton said.

"We're not sure how many victims are out there," Norton said. "He's very active in the chat rooms (and dating websites) and that's why we've released his picture. We're aware of a couple people he's talked to but we don't know who they are."

Norton said he's waiting to examine the man's computer to find further information.

"There were numerous chat rooms to speak of but no one in particular so I think he was just a surfer out there trying to be successful luring anywhere, anytime type thing. I think it's all this man does, or did," van Rooy alleged. "He had access to many computers and spent lots of time. This (allegedly) was a passion, so to speak."

John Victor Rahal was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Ajax. He is charged with seven counts of Internet luring of a child, seven counts of invitation to sexual touching, five counts of indecent exposure of genitals to a child and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

Rahal, who used to live in Oshawa, was known to use screen names "John_Rahal2003" and "Rahal73."

His first court appearance was scheduled for Friday.

"Parents need to be more diligent and be aware of what their kids are doing on the Internet," Norton said.
