They are now offering $500,000 for information into the disappearance of 13-year-old Prudence Bird, who was last seen at her home in the Melbourne suburb of Glenroy.

In 2000, police offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for her death. They hope the renewed appeal will encourage people to come forward.

The teenager was last seen packing her lunch. A family friend, who lived at the house, went to the garage.

When the person returned, the front door was open, the TV was on and a hot meal was sitting uneaten on the table.

The girl has not been seen since.

Her mother, Jenny Bird said the disappearance has been a cruel burden to carry around all these years.

"It's like carrying a bag of bricks around with you every day of your life," she said.

"I miss her, I see her brother and sister grow up to beautiful adults, and yeah, I miss her."

Detective Inspector Steve Clarke, of the homicide squad, said despite an extensive police investigation, Prue Bird's disappearance remains a mystery.

"She has no criminal history, nor did she have any known personal reasons to run away from home," he said.

"It is as though she simply disappeared off the face of the earth," he said.

Detective Inspector Clarke said her family has had to live with the mystery for 16 years.

"We believe somebody out there has information that can solve this mystery," he said.

Yes, this is an Australian case.

Shame her case is still unsolved after all this time.
