Crime Stoppers: What happened to Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg?

 By Jon Azpiri

Crime Stopppers needs your help to solve the cold case homicides of 18-year-old Tanya Van Cuylenborg and 20-year-old Jay Cook, a young B.C. couple who was murdered on a trip to Washington state almost 30 years ago.

Van Cylenborg and Cook each lived with their parents in Victoria. On November 18, 1987, the high school sweethearts decided to visit Seattle on an overnight trip.

They took a ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, WA and drove down the Olympic Peninsula in a van, stopping to buy gas at a business called Ben’s Deli. Receipts show they took another ferry from Bremerton to Seattle. But what happened next is a mystery.

Here is a timeline of what we know:

Nov. 24: Van Cuylenborg’s body is discovered in a ditch 20 kilometres south of Bellingham, WA.

Nov. 25: Van Cuylenborg’s wallet and keys are found discarded behind a Bellingham tavern. The van is located next to the Bellingham Greyhound bus station.

Nov. 26: Cook’s body is discovered under a bridge near Monroe, WA. Tanya’s father believes the couple may have picked up a hitchhiker.

This is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most baffling murder cases. The families of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Culenborg need closure.

They’re urging anyone with information on this case to call police or, if you wish to remain anonymous, visit bccrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
