Children rescued in 'largest' child porn bust

A four-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were rescued from sexual abuse during what police said was the largest child pornography bust in Ontario history.

Police announced the arrests of 31 people, who face a total of 93 charges, at a press conference this morning.

Those charged include a 14-year-old, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and a 60-year-old. The charges range from sexual assault to possession of child pornography.

More charges are pending, police said.

The suspects are all men, and many were relatives or neighbours of victims, police said.

"The most fundamental responsibility of our society is to protect our children," Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino said this morning.

"The Internet continues to pose a threat to children, parents and certainly we feel challenged in our ability to keep up, to keep pace, with the pervasive use being made of it by those who seek to victimize children," he said.

Police from 18 services from across the province were represented at the press conference. The arrests were a response to the creation of a provincial strategy to combat child pornography.

Many sexual offenders trade crime pornography images like sports fans might swap baseball cards, police said.

Despite the high numbers, police said studies show they suspect that 19 of 20 cases of child sexual abuse in Canada go undetected.

Since the strategy was put into place by the provincial government in August 2006, there have been 4,782 investigations, leading to 1,983 charges against 634 people.

Fantino used the press conference to push for a cross-Canada sexual abuse registry to help people fight the victimization of children by child pornography on the Internet.

"The Internet knows no boundaries," Fantino said.

Wow! Unbelievable. On to think this was going in Ontario where they have possibly the best anti child porn system in the world and these creeps were so bold anyway. It just goes to show how much more work is needed to root these scum out.

Interesting point of civil liberty on CityTV News last night.  They had a camera crew outside of court whent he charges were laid and tried to take film of one of the accused.  He shoved the camera out of the way and a woman - his mom or wife - went at the camera guy very angry.

So he was accused, but should his picture be blasted all over the evening news?  I mean, I know that the public can make their minds up, but this is one instance where the media - in their mad rush for profit - might have crossed over the line and jeapordized the guy's ability to get a fair trial.  And not being able to get a fair trial is one defence.

On the other hand, if his (or the others accused) pictures were made available, they might be recognized by even more victims.

Tough call.

It is a tough call and a fine line.  One the States seem to routinely do.

I have a friend who went home to New York during the holidays in December.  She was supposed to be gone for two weeks.  She was home five days later because her step-brother has raped and assaulted her brutally.  She required 20 stitches on both her legs, never mind what she had to deal with as a result of the rape.

Her mother went to the papers and gave his name and other information. As a result 4 other victims came forward.  This has thrown my friend very much.  As far as I know she is getting the counseling and support that she needs.  I don't ask her, however I have been there for her.

THE judge didnt post a no publication ban? their names and locations were given publically. how is their picture going to be any worse other than the possibility of more victims seeing their faces and coming forth?

these animals didnt care about where the faces and bodies of their young victims went, why should we be concerned about where these accused faces go? Unless there is a publication ban these reporters were not doing anything wrong.

that's my 2 cents worth lol

I wonder if they have thought of the idea of showing the head shots of the children around schools in the hopes that a teacher might recognize a child. As long as a the teachers can be trusted the identity of the children would be secure. For that matter they would not have to even say that they child sexual abuse cases, until charges are laid. I don't mean to be calis, but in some cases the child's full photo is on the net anyway, hidden in some forum archive.

If they were caught viewing child pornograph....and/or taking part in it, there is something wrong..... this was a police investigation where they were caught with the goods..... I don't care if they get a fair trial.... did the kids get a fair trial? .... not likely.  ...and how much do you want to bet we never ever hear what happens with these creeps!.... lots of judges out there to make sure these creeps are protected or just get a slap on the hand. imo!

"why should we be concerned about where these accused faces go?"

That is a good point and I agree.  But we should care to ensure that they get a fair trial because NOT getting a fair trial is sometimes a reason why these creeps get let off, or the trial drags on, or they spend 2-for-1 in custody awaiting a fair venue or time.

I have no problem with their names or a photo being released, especially to help other, unknown, vicitms.   But pursuit by a news camera not only could jeapordize the justice, but it also sensationalizes the crimes for profit.

The actions of these child pornographers is horrific.

A 12 year old girl, and a 4 year old boy are taken away to Children's Aid.I hope these children survive their ordeal, and live healthy lives.Didn't the mothers of these kids have a CLUE TO WHAT WAS HAPPENING?

How will the little boy ever come to grips with what happened to him? And the 12 year old girl, must feel horrible. They will need help along the way, in order to lead a healthy life.

Seems child pornography is big business. They should be locked away for life for their crimes against children. Here we are in the 2009, and this crap is still going on!! >:( >:( >:(

Girl in porn bust claims abuse by dad

TORONTO - The 12-year-old girl rescued by police in a round up of 31 people in Ontario's largest child porn bust is now in the care of the Children's Aid Society.

The pre-teen, who alleged she was sexually assaulted by her father, was removed from her Burlington home Wednesday as Halton Regional Police officers arrested him, Det.-Sgt. Grant Wilkinson said yesterday.

The girl apparently isn't depicted in any of the child pornography detectives found on the home's computer.

"No, not to my knowledge," Wilkinson said. "We're still doing the analysis of the computers but we have no indication of that yet.

"And I would say chances would be slim," he said.

The 53-year-old man was at first charged with making child pornography available and possessing it. He was later charged with sexual assault and interference.

Detectives knew a 12-year-old girl lived at the home "but we didn't have any indication she had been sexually assaulted," Wilkinson said.

A 4-year-old boy from the Ottawa area was also removed from his home after his father, 53, was arrested for possessing, distributing and making child pornography.

The arrests were part of a huge Internet investigation.

I do think it is reasonable to publish photos of the accused, I do not object to that at all. These media outlets would gladly give those people a chance at an interview to explian there side and I would hope the media would follow up the story if those accused are aquited.

This man, a Queens University student in Kingston represented Team Canada at the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing according to todays edition of the Kingston Whig Standard.
