Const. Mario Jimenez, 36, was charged in connection with an incident that is alleged to have occurred in November, while he was off duty.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, or ASIRT, was called in to investigate.

"We ... interviewed all the witnesses, gathered whatever evidence was available, assessed the strength of the case and considered the opinion of the Crown that was offered to us and decided that charges should be laid," ASIRT director Clifton Purvis said at a news conference Wednesday in Edmonton.

The alleged victim was known to the officer, but no further details on the case were made available.

Jimenez was released on court-ordered conditions and will make his first appearance in court on Jan. 29.

Jimenez has been a member of the RCMP for 18 months.

Once the investigation into the complaint began in November, he was moved from active duty at the detachment and placed on administrative duty in Strathcona County, according to RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Wayne Oakes.

ASIRT is an independent agency that investigates serious or sensitive matters that might have resulted from the actions of a police officer, or incidents involving police that result in death or serious injury.
