Shannon Maureen COLLINS | murdered (Dec 2007)

Friends and family of a 29-year-old Edmonton woman who disappeared without a trace nearly a year ago - after allegedly planning on going to Calgary and working for the Hells Angels - are finding few answers to their questions.

Stephanie Collins says she reported her sister, Shannon Maureen Collins, missing after receiving information that she may have headed south to work for the infamous biker gang in December 2007.

"I was told that she was becoming a hooker for them," 20-year-old Stephanie said.

Stephanie said the last time she talked to Collins was in May 2007, when she had "three legitimate, good-working jobs."

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the matter as a missing persons case, but say they are not following any leads or tips.

According to EPS spokesman Patrycia Thenu, cops investigated a lead that Collins may be in Calgary, but came up empty-handed.

Thenu said Collins is known to police, but did not comment when asked if the woman was known to have engaged in a high-risk lifestyle.

Collins appears to have been relatively active on Facebook until the end of November 2007, after which no activity is shown.

Stephanie reported Collins, who is the mother of an 11-year-old boy, missing about a month ago, but says there have not been any major search efforts.

"I'm the first person to do anything," Stephanie said. "I've talked to a few people and I made the missing persons report to the cops."

She added that it's not out of character for Collins to leave without telling anyone.

Her friends, including some who have known Collins since elementary school, have lost contact with her since the end of last year.

"I am concerned now, after hearing about all of this," said Tyler Peters, who had become acquainted with Collins when she worked as a server at the Inglewood Pub in the summer of 2007. "She was always ... a happy, cheerful person."

Collins is described as roughly five-foot-three with a slim build, blond hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS

Mounties have identified a human skull found in Strathcona County.

Police say the skull and other skeletal remains were those of Shannon Maureen Collins, 29, of Edmonton.

She'd been reported missing to city police Sept. 9. Her remains were found June 5 and police have said they believe she was slain between 15 months and two-and-a-half years ago.

An acreage owner reported his dog had found an intact human skull on a rural acreage south of Sherwood Park called Belvedere Heights at Township Road 514, Range Road 231. It's about one kilometre west of Highway 21.

Collins was identified by the medical examiner's office through dental records.

Project KARE has been notified, but is not actively involved in the investigation.

The Project KARE task force is probing some 70 deaths and disappearances of people leading high-risk lifestyles, including prostitutes.

Police are calling for tips on Collins death and can be reached at 780-467-7741 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Woman's remains found three months before declared missing
Laura Drake, edmontonjournal.com
Published: Friday, December 12, 2008

SHERWOOD PARK - Shannon Collins' remains were found three months before she was even declared missing, says the RCMP.

"That's not typical," said Strathcona County RCMP Const. Wally Henry.

On June 5, an acreage owner in Strathcona County stumbled across a human skull on his property. RCMP were called out and found the rest of the skeleton.

Collins' family last saw her in December 2007, Henry said. The fact they did not report her missing until many months later is part of the reason the RCMP has determined that Collins led a high-risk lifestyle.

"If this was someone who led a normal lifestyle, it wouldn't have been a matter of eight to 10 months before she was reported missing," Henry said.

High-risk lifestyle generally means involvement in the sex or drug trades, but Henry could not confirm to what extent Collins may have been involved in either.

Project KARE, an RCMP task force dedicated to the investigation of high-risk disappearances and deaths, has been consulted in the investigation but is not actively participating.

Henry urged anyone with any information at all about Collins to come forward to the RCMP. Since Collins was only identified last week, he said, the investigation is essentially just beginning, even though she may have died many months ago.

"It's going to be more challenging," Henry said.

Shannon Maureen Collins, 29, was declared dead December 12th, 2008.

Collins was last seen alive in December 2007. She was reported missing in September 2008. Dental record comparisons confirmed a body found June 5th, 2008 in Strathcona County was that of Collins.

Collins was deemed to be the Edmonton metro area's fifth homicide of the year at the time of the discovery of her body.

Case status is open and active.

latest update

On June 5th, 2008 at approximately 8:00 p.m. Strathcona County RCMP received a call from a homeowner whose dog uncovered a human skull in a yard in the Belvedere Heights subdivision near Range Road 231 and Township Road 514, south of Sherwood Park.

So many bodies have been found out there! Not far outa town, easy access, and it has become a graveyard, for the many killed over the years. I wonder if this killer is one more of the pack we seem to have.

Human bones found in a wooded area in Strathcona County in June have been identified as the remains of 29-year-old Edmontonian Shannon Maureen Collins,

Strathcona County RCMP told reporters yesterday that the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Collins, the mother of an 11-year-old boy, was last seen a year ago, but family only reported her missing Sept. 9. In October, Shannon's sister, Stephanie Collins, told Sun Media that Shannon was known to disappear without telling anyone where she was going.

Const. Wally Henry with Strathcona County RCMP said the case will be more complicated for investigators because so much time has passed since the remains, which were identified by dental records, were discovered.

"Because of the time frame ... it will be a more difficult case," he said.

On June 5, a homeowner in the rural Belvedere Heights subdivision found his family dog playing with a human skull in his backyard. RCMP searched the area and found skeletal remains in a wooded area near the property.

Police said Collins led a high-risk lifestyle. Although investigators consulted with Project KARE, it is not actively involved in the investigation.

Stephanie said she reported her sister missing after she was told Shannon was going to Calgary to become a prostitute for the Hells Angels. The last time she spoke with her in May 2007, Shannon had "three legitimate, good-working jobs."

Henry wouldn't confirm Calgary police were involved in the investigation. "There's information out there we're still trying to solidify," he said.

Investigators will begin door-knocking to talk to neighbours in the area where the remains were found.

They also want to talk to Shannon's friends and family so they can get a sense of her "daily activities" and find out "how encompassing her high-risk lifestyle was," Henry said.

Meanwhile, Shannon's family and friends have been mourning since they found out about her death on Wednesday.

Chris Nuthack, Shannon's friend, said he gathered with Shannon's family Thursday night to reminisce about her life.

Nuthack said he was shocked to learn Shannon was dead, but, in a way, relieved to finally know what happened to her.

"There was a level of relief in at least we knew what happened. At the same time, we were hoping for a different (outcome)," he said.

Now, he added, they are hopeful police will find her killer.

"What it sounded like (was) she was dumped," he said. "That's not cool. There's some harsh feelings. We hope they catch (the murderer.)"

Anyone with information about Shannon or her disappearance is asked to call Crime Stoppers.

Let us hope that who ever is responsible is caught!!! We had enuff!!!

The Father of Shannon Collins Wants her Killer Caught!!
**************************************************
Shannon, was a beautiful young lady, and her remains were found in the Killing Fields of Sherwood Park, where many a gal has been found.

RIP Shannon Collins  & (((((hugs)) to all family and friends...whoever did this needs to be caught, now! There have been way too many slayings of women, who are dropped off in this area.

By  TAMAS VIRAG, SUN MEDIA

Shannon Collins was found dead in Strathcona County. (Supplied)

As he prepares to lay his oldest daughter to rest, the grieving father of a 29-year-old woman whose remains were found in Strathcona County six months ago is hoping to find her killer.

?Through getting the story out on Shannon, I?m sure we?re going to get this thing solved,? said Gary Collins, who believes whoever is responsible for Shannon Maureen Collins? death is out there to be found.

He said Shannon?s ex-boyfriend - the one who told family Shannon had gone down to Calgary to work as a prostitute for a biker gang - was a ?very violent? man who is being re-interviewed by police.

Collins says the new developments in the case are giving family hope that ?justice will be served one day.?

Despite the allegation, Collins says his daughter was not involved in prostitution and had no plans to pursue such a lifestyle before she disappeared a year ago.

?Sure she was messed up with drugs, but a lot of people are,? Collins said, explaining the police?s label of the young woman as someone who led a high-risk lifestyle. ?She was trying to straighten her life out, she was trying to work many jobs.?

In an earlier interview, sister Stephanie Collins said Shannon had three jobs the last time she talked to her in May, 2007.

Shannon also worked at the Inglewood Pub in the summer of 2007.

Friends and family lost contact with Shannon, the mother of an 11-year-old boy, in December, 2007, and reported her missing nine months later.

Her remains were found in a wooded area in June, but not identified until two weeks ago.

Collins says the manner in which Shannon is believed to have died makes coping with the tragedy especially hard.

?If you lose someone in a car accident, you can come to terms with that. If your child is killed outside a bar, it?s a tragedy, but somehow you can come to terms with it,? the tearful father said. ?If your child is murdered and someone drives 20-30 miles out into the bush, goes 200-300 feet into the woods and dumps her body to be ripped apart by animals ... there?s no friggin? dignity in this.?

Collins is hoping that renewed interest in the case, as well as new evidence, will prompt anyone with information to come forward.

?We want Shannon?s story out there. We?re not going to let some bastard get away with this,? he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
