Police released this image of a sex assault suspect. (RCMP photo)

A pervert appears to be slithering through communities west of Edmonton, prompting police to issue a warning about the round-faced creep.

"Given the nature, the extent and how many incidents there were, investigators have been working extremely hard on this," said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Wayne Oakes. "We want to do everything we can to ensure the safety of Albertans, and to ensure this little spree does not continue any further."

Cops say the latest reported sexual assaults happened Monday, when at least six victims in two communities were targeted in a span of a few hours.

Beginning at about 4 p.m., the pervert assaulted at least one woman at a Hinton store. At 4:45, the same man is believed to have tried to lure two teenaged girls into his vehicle. Minutes later, police suspect the same sicko convinced a seven-year-old girl into his vehicle, but she managed to jump out a few moments later.

About 5:45, a man with the same description sexually assaulted two women in the Edson Wal-Mart, 90 km east.

Fifteen minutes later, a vehicle matching the descripion of the truck in the Hinton cases was seen at a gas station at the east end of Edson.

"We can advise that in this set of circumstances, the allegations of these offences did not result in any significant degree of harm," Oakes said. "Any act of sexual assault is not permissible and should not be tolerated."

Police believe the Wal-Mart incidents are connected to the attempted luring of two teen girls, as well as the attempted abduction of the seven-year-old girl in Hinton.

Cops are looking for a white man, about five-foot-five and medium build, with a round face, round glasses and short brown hair. He may have a small goatee. He wore a white T-shirt with a black shirt underneath, and khaki pants.

Cops say the man was driving a dark blue or black 2000 Dodge Dakota with a B.C. licence plate. The truck had a lot of after-market modifications, including a front bush bar with square fog lights, headache rack, hoodscoops, box rails, chrome-plated mud flaps, tube running boards and black rims.

An 85-year-old man has been arrested in a decades-old child sexual assault case.

Charges had been laid against Anton Paul Rapati, formerly of St. Albert, in 1993, but he fled to Holland.

The elderly fugitive was rearrested Tuesday after Mounties received information that he had returned.

The complaints, originally made in 1991, go as far back as 1971. The attacks are alleged to have continued until 1978.

Rapati was accused of gaining the confidence of his victims' parents and ingratiating himself into the families.

Once he had their trust, it's alleged he would sexually assault boys and girls aged seven to 15.

The assaults allegedly continued for years.

Victims came forward and complained to St. Albert RCMP on Dec. 12, 1991. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Rapati on July 14, 1993.

Further complaints were also made Nov. 16, 2005.

Although the allegations are more than 30 years old and Rapati had remained out of the country for the past 15 years, Mounties said they kept the file open on him.

Rapati is charged with several counts of sexual assault under the 1971 and 1972 Criminal Codes.

Police are asking for help, in this case of another pedo freak! There is also a man, who may also have a child, who police say was in the vicinity, and may have knowledge!

So if someone you know, comes up with this, and saw what happened, get him to a cop shop, or Crime Stoppers!!! Don't hide this, lives may be saved!!!!

Police are asking for the public's help to find a man who might have information about the alleged sexual assaults of two young children at a south Edmonton mall earlier this month.

Officers say the alleged assaults took place on the afternoon of Sept. 10 in the toy department at Zellers in Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre, at 82 Avenue and 83 Street.

"The children are very young and these are very serious sexual assaults," said Edmonton police spokesman Patrycia Thenu.

Edmonton Police Service's Zebra Child Protection Section has been investigating the incident.

Police believe a white man with dark hair, frosted tips and an average build could have more information. Police said they think he is also the parent of a young child.

"He is not a suspect," Thenu said. "Police believe he might have information about the incident because he was in the store."

While officers continue their investigation, police urge parents to keep a close eye on their children.

"Of course parents or babysitters should always keep an eye on the little kids," Thenu said. "Don't let them wander off. Always make sure they're supervised."

Some shoppers outside of Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre were troubled, but not surprised, to learn of the alleged assaults yesterday.

"It's scary, but it doesn't surprise me," Ross Martin said while his family packed his four-year-old granddaughter and their shopping bags into a van. "As grandparents, we watch our grandchildren vigilantly. So do their parents. But some parents don't."

At the mall's main entrance, Dina Moxness was shocked.

"In this Zellers?" she asked, pointing to the store, her three-year-old son pulling at her arm.

"That's really creepy, especially because they've been saying there's been men attacking women around here," she said, referring to an assault on a 22-year-old woman in early September.

She appreciates that investigators have made the alleged assaults public.

"It's good to know so parents are aware of what's going on," she said.

In a statement, a Zellers spokesman said the store is co-operating fully with police.

Cops are also encouraging the public to keep watch for anyone who might be acting suspiciously around children.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
