Weird one. I know this is generalizing, but her husband was the last person to see her alive.

That is probably why. I bet the police already suspect the husband, but like so many cases in BC, they may be just short of having enough evidence without the body. And in that area, it could be anywhere.

See what tricks they use when they come to court. He knows English as well as you and I, but all this halting to have the testimony interpreted from English into French is a diversion. I took a hearing like that once, it was English to MicMac, but those men know the language as well as I did. It was just common everyday testimony. They had lawyers, so why do they need the interpretation of what is going on. Most people in the courtroom that don't have any legal knowledge, do not know what is going on. This is really great that he is finally getting to court after all this time. I just hope that he is convicted and is behind bars soon, just where he belongs. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Yes Cape , a stall tactic and also hoping to muddy the waters with excess testimony.  I think he had all the extra time he didn't deserve already since its taken more than 10 years to get to this point.

Denis Florian Ratte confessed to killing his wife Wendy and told Mounties he hid the body in a wooded area outside of Prince George, an RCMP undercover officer testified in court Tuesday in Prince George.

He also told officers that he poisoned a man after being cheated in a drug deal - a claim investigators discovered to be false.

Testifying before a jury of 10 men and two women, the RCMP officer - whose name is protected by a publication ban - detailed the elaborate sting operation that led to Ratte's arrest on Dec. 2008, 13 years after his wife Wendy disappeared after running errands in downtown Prince George. He has pled not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.

The so-called "Mr. Big" ruse is designed to convince its target, usually a suspect in a long-running homicide investigation, they are being recruited into an international criminal organization. It usually culminates with the subject meeting the fictional head of the organization - Mr. Big - and being asked to confess to a past crime.

In the case of Ratte, the operation, conducted over the summer and autumn of 2008, neared its conclusion when regular members of the RCMP visited his Prince George home, warned him they possessed new evidence in the disappearance of his wife and told him his arrest was imminent.

Ratte had experienced a number of "scenarios" over the months, including a faked "robbery" where a member of the organization threatened another undercover officer with a gun, meant to convince him of the legitimacy of the fictional criminal operation. After the RCMP visit, he met with "Mr. Big", confessed to the murder of his wife and told the undercover officers the location of her body.

Police, however, could not locate remains of Wendy Ratte. Jurors were set to see video of Ratte's confession today.

Under cross-examination, the officer also testified Denis Ratte said he murdered a man with rat poison, literally because he "ratted" Ratte out. Subsequent investigation revealed Ratte's ostensible victim died of natural causes.

Wendy Ratte disappeared at 9 a.m. on Aug. 18, 1997 near what is now Value Village, close to the intersection of 15th Avenue and Spruce Street. She failed to show up for a meeting with Denis; police found no trace of her other than her van parked near the intersection.

On November 3rd, 2010, after a three week jury trial in Prince George, Denis RATTE was found guilty of 2nd Degree Murder, for killing his wife Wendy RATTE in 1997.

Wendy Ratte 44 years old at the time of her disappearance, was employed as a substitute teacher. She was initially reported to police as missing.   It was reported that Wendy had dropped her husband off for work in downtown Prince George on the morning of Aug 18, 1997 and was not seen since.  Her white Plymouth van was found in a commercial parking lot, shortly after.

"Denis Ratte was arrested on December 5, 2008, some 11 years later after Wendys' disappearance.
The investigation was initiated by the Prince George RCMP, then handed over for the long term efforts and led by the RCMP "E" Division Major Crimes Unit.  A sentencing date has not been set" stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

"This an example of how no matter how long it takes, our investigators will work these cases, carefully sifting through information piecing together factual history, that eventually leads to concrete evidence" added Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

Wendy Ratte was not listed as part of the official Highway 16 investigations.

PRINCE GEORGE - 13 years after his wife disappeared, a Prince George, BC, man has been sentenced to life in prison for her murder, but the couple's adult children remain conflicted about her death.  Wendy Ratte was 47-years-old when she disappeared while shopping in downtown Prince George in August of 1997.  Her remains were never been found, and the case remained unsolved for more than a decade, until her husband Denis Ratte was charged in 2008, after he confessed to police during a so-call Mr. Big police sting operation.  On Nov 3, Ratte was convicted of second-degree murder for shooting his wife in the head and dumping her naked body in a swamp.  (CBC)

Ratte case to air on Dateline NBC

June 11, 2013
Citizen staff

The U.S. network television show Dateline NBC will air an episode this Friday on the 1997 murder of a Prince George woman and the subsequent conviction of her husband for second-degree murder 13 years later.

The show is set for 8 p.m. on King 5.

On Aug. 18, 1997, Wendy Ann Twiss Ratte, 44 at the time, was reported missing and the family's van was found parked at a supermarket, now Value Village.

The case had languished for years but in 2008, Denis, her husband, became the subject of an elaborate undercover operation, known as a Mr. Big sting, in which police officers posed as high-level criminals to gain the suspect's trust.

Police got Ratte to tell them details about the killing, and after his arrest, Ratte confessed, but recanted at trial.

A jury found Ratte guilty of second-degree murder in November 2010 and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison before eligibility for parole. The last of his legal options hit a dead end in May when the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed his application to appeal the verdict.

Dateline NBC producer Izhar Harpaz and cameraman Simon Doolittle were in the Prince George area earlier this year collecting footage and interviews.

In February, CBC's The Fifth Estate aired an episode on the same case.
