Sex trade worker hurt in attack
Rachel De Lazzer
The Hamilton Spectator
(Dec 29, 2007)

Police are investigating whether sex trade workers are being targeted after a Boxing Day assault similar to an October incident.
"There are similarities, so we're looking at those," said detective Myra James with the Sexual Assault Unit. "Perhaps they are  connected, but at this point in time we can't say with absolute certainty." Both incidents involve victims who are sex trade workers. Both were picked up in a red van in the early morning, east of Sherman Avenue. Police said the injuries to the women were "significant" and the victims required hospital treatment.

The most recent attack occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 26. A 25-year-old woman was picked up by a man driving a red van. She couldn't provide a location because she's unfamiliar with the city. After entering the van, she was driven to a remote area where he sexually assaulted her. Police believe the incident may have happened near Victoria Avenue North or Eastwood Park and possibly around railroad tracks or a factory area. In an earlier incident with some similarities, a 39-year-old woman was assaulted by a man inside a red van at about 5 a.m. on Oct. 28. They were on Kenilworth Avenue North, south of Barton Street East. The van was described as older with dark pinstriping and sliding doors. The man was described as a smoker, about age 25, and with long, thick eyelashes. Police are urging everyone in the community, especially women in the sex trade, to be cautious if they see a potential suspect driving a red van. They want to hear from anyone with information about the suspect or his van. Call police at 905-546-4772.  rdelazzer@thespec.com  905-526-3404
