Woman's death not linked to accused killer, police contend
Jack Keating, The Province

Published: Wednesday, January 09, 2008

Police say the murder of a 39-year-old woman whose body was found in a Surrey alley last month is not linked to accused Fraser Valley serial-killer Davey Mato Butorac.Police yesterday identified the Surrey murder victim as Shannon Raylene Deschamps. Her body was found in an alley off the 13600-block 108th Avenue in Whalley at about midnight Dec. 11."It does not have any links to the Butorac file," said Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. "I can confidently say there is no connection."Deschamps may have worked in the sex trade, said Carr.Police are withholding how Deschamps died. Her death was Surrey's 10th murder of 2007.Police believe her body was found within a few hours of her death."We're trying to establish whether or not that was where the homicide took place or whether she was placed there," said Carr.

"It's a very active ongoing murder investigation. We're hopeful that we'll get to the bottom of this in due course. But right now it stands as a bit of a mystery."Asked if there are any suspects, Carr said: "I believe that we may have some interest in some people, but I don't think we have anything definitive."Deschamps lived not far from where her body was found."She was not married and she was just living with a friend and was just kind of trying to get on with life," said Carr.
