Unsolved Homicides
The Vernon Leugner Murder
Vernon Leugner
During the early morning hours of Friday, April 3, 1998, 59-year old Vernon Leugner was found beaten and unconscious in the vacant lot between 794 and 786 Main Street (the New West Hotel). He was conveyed to the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition and he died two days later.

An autopsy determined that Leugner had several lacerations and injuries to his face and head indicating he may have been punched or kicked numerous times.

Leugner?s movements can be traced up until midnight on April 2, 1998, when he was seen panhandling at the nearby Yale Hotel. Shortly after the murder two witnesses came forward who had been driving down Main Street shortly after 1:00 a.m. when they observed one male strike another in the lot where Leugner was found. The witnesses indicated that the male who was hit fell to the ground and did not move. It is believed the male who fell to the ground was in fact Leugner.

Witnesses describe the second male as possibly native, 5?10? ? 6?1? in height, average to husky build, 25-30 years old, dark collar length hair, wearing dark clothing including a jacket with a zippered front and possibly a dark baseball cap. The male may also be left handed as the witnesses believe this was the hand he struck with.

Leugner was generally a likable person who lived his life along the Main Street strip. He had no known enemies and the motive for his murder is unknown. It is possible that Leugner was relieving himself in the empty lot when a person bent on robbery attacked him. When he was found his pockets were turned inside out and there was some loose change lying beside him.

If you have any information about this case, please contact Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477), or e-mail Sgt. Al Bradbury and Det. Jon Lutz of the Cold Case Homicide Unit.
