Sex addict sues
Social worker named for taking advantage of deviant

EDMONTON -- A mentally ill Edmonton sex addict has launched a $1.02-million lawsuit against the province after alleging his social worker manipulated him into a sexual relationship.

In a statement of claim filed Nov. 8, Peter Dam, 43, alleges Alexander (Sandy) Ree used confidential information about Dam to manipulate him and take advantage of him, sexually and emotionally.

"Ree engaged Dam in a sexual relationship for Ree's own personal gratification and in violation of his professional duties to Dam," says the statement of claim.

"Rather than helping Dam improve his mental condition and heal his sexual deviance, Ree exacerbated Dam's problems and took advantage of Dam's vulnerability."

According to the statement of claim, Dam received services from the province for mental health problems, including sexual addiction, from 1995 to 1998 and was a client of Ree, who worked for Family and Social Services.

Dam was manipulated into the relationship and sexual behaviour and never consented to it, says the statement of claim.

The statement of claim also alleges Ree had a history of misusing the personal information of clients and engaging in inappropriate relationships and conduct with his clients before and during the time Dam was his client.

According to the lawsuit, the government either was aware of Ree's inappropriate conduct and the risk it posed to clients, or ought to have been aware of it and failed to take any or adequate steps in response to it.

A statement of defence has not been filed.
