Title: Durham police officers among 5 charged in drug investigation
Post by: jellybean on September 13, 2017, 04:31:15 PM

Two Durham Regional Police officers and three civilians have been arrested after a year-long investigation into an Ajax bar.

Police began investigating the Black Bear Bar and Grill on Westney Rd. S. during the summer of 2016 because of ?excess alcohol serving and illegal drug transactions,? according to a news release from Durham Regional Police Service on Tuesday.

?Obviously it?s very concerning and disappointing when we find ourselves investigating our own employees,? said Durham Regional Police Chief Paul Martin in the statement.

The investigation, aided by officers from the Toronto Police Service, found that cocaine and marijuana were being sold at the bar, the statement said.

All five suspects were arrested on Tuesday and held for a bail hearing.

Const. Husen Aswat is facing seven counts of breach of trust, four counts of trafficking in cocaine, three counts of weapons dangerous and possession of the proceeds of crime, and one count each of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

Const. Amandeep Thakur has been charged with two counts of breach of trust, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime.

The three civilians face a variety of charges, including trafficking in cocaine and marijuana, and possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.

Aswat and Thakur have also been suspended from duty.
