GUELPH — Guelph Police are asking the public for more information about the disappearance of a prominent member of the city's Ethiopian community.

Seble (Mimi) Dietrich, 39, was last seen leaving her home on Vancouver Drive sometime between 12 p.m. on July 10 and 6 p.m. on July 11.

She was seen driving in her 1999 red Mercedes SLK, which was later found near Sidamo Coffee, a coffee shop she runs downtown.

Dietrich was reported missing Saturday. Police say she's been known to travel extensively between Canada and Ethiopia. She recently returned from a trip to Ethiopia.

"This is out of character," Det. Sgt. Manfred Hoyer said Thursday. "Most of her trips are announced and this is an unannounced situation. That's why we're concerned about it."

Hoyer said Dietrich has family in Guelph who have shared their concerns.

No one answered the buzzer Thursday at Dietrich's business on Wyndham Street.

The shop has hosted prayer sessions for members of Guelph's Ethiopian community. It's also served as the backdrop for The Mimi Show, an online video series that Dietrich produces.

The videos show her interviewing pastors and members of a blind women association, among other people of faith. She posted her last video 10 months ago.

The show's objectives, according to her website, are to increase the faith of Christians and explore new initiatives that "contribute to the extension of the Kingdom of God."

Police describe Dietrich as a "non-white" woman, five-foot-five with a slim build, black hair and brown eyes. She often wears wigs of different colours and length. She speaks English, Ethiopian and German.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Det. Sgt. Manfred Hoyer at 519-824-1212, ext. 7331 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

This seems like an unusual situation.  So she was missing for a couple of weeks before it was reported.  Article says " most " of the time she announces her trips.  Maybe she didn't this time ?  Where does she usually park her car when she goes?  If she's just got back recently from Ethiopia, would she go again so soon?  No man in the picture?  Hope she's ok.

Here is a video of her program.  Here she is interviewing someone and they are speaking Ethiopian, perhaps?

A very attractive and well composed woman.  I believe I see a wedding ring on her finger.  This is dated 2013.

Snip it:
Investigators say Dietrich was last seen driving her car, a red 1999 Mercedes SLK and left her home sometime between 12:00 p.m. on July 10th and 6:00 p.m. on July 11.

She is married with 3 kids, so with the above statement I would think father and kids were not at home during this time, they left or the last one of them left at noon, she was home, they or first one home was at 6pm next day to say no Mom and her car gone.

Wonder who last saw her driving her car and where? It was found at her coffee shop, who found the car and when, did she make it inside? Was she helping someone? Has she gone into hiding? There is not much more information out there, it would be nice to know what her plan was for the day, week, was she expected anywhere, was she supposed to be away for a week, is this why the delay in reporting her missing?

Here are more links: the last one states it is not uncommon for her to leave without telling anyone?

She was reported missing 9 days after the fact.  Why would her friends and family wait that long to report her disappearance?  Then her car is suddenly located at her coffee shop.  If it had been there all of the time, would the family not of found it.   Did they not search her usual places??

This sounds fishy - what on earth was this woman up to? She was up to something In my personal opinion.
Very secretive in my books.

Missing person update - Seble Dietrich
Posted on Thursday September 11, 2014

On July 19, 2014 the Guelph Police became involved in a missing person investigation. The police investigation revealed that Seble Dietrich, age 39 left her home on July 10, 2014 in her two door, 1999 red Mercedes SLK. This vehicle was later located at Seble’s place of business in downtown Guelph.

Ms. Dietrich is highly involved in the Ethiopian community and conducted prayer studies from her place of business in downtown Guelph. Ms. Dietrich is known as Mimi within her circle of friends and associates. Ms. Dietrich is known to travel frequently within Canada and her native country of Ethiopia. Seble Dietrich changes her appearance often as she wears different wigs on a regular basis.

Since the onset of this investigation the Guelph Police have assigned a team of investigators who continue to look into the disappearance of Seble Dietrich.

Police have been checking into her background including her involvement with various church organizations, her business Sidamo Café, the Ethiopian Community and any known friends and acquaintances.

Through this investigation police have identified and spoken with many individuals she was involved with.  As police speak with these individuals and learn of others she was involved with – police continue to seek out those people.  At times, it has been difficult to connect with everyone identified because of language barriers, or geographical barriers. Investigators have communicated with individuals in Canada, Ethiopia, England, and Germany.

Guelph Police have reached out to partners at the Canadian Border Service Agency, US Homeland Security, US Border Security, RCMP, and Interpol for assistance. We have also asked the financial institutions to monitor for any activity on her accounts, as we would for all missing person cases.

Since July 10th, 2014, there has been no known contact from her with family, friends, or associates.  It is out of character for her not to communicate with anyone. Investigators continue to be in contact with her family and friends. The immediate family is cooperating.  In the interest and protection of the immediate family, we are not prepared to comment further on that.

The team of investigators continues to examine all possibilities surrounding her disappearance.

There is no evidence to date indicating there is a risk to the community in relation to Mimi’s disappearance.

The investigators continue to treat the case as suspicious and ask that if anyone from the public has information to contact Sgt. Tina Ryan at 519-824-1212 ext 7329.  (Now heading the investigation as a result of planned personnel changes within the organization.) Anonymous tips can be left at CRIME STOPPERS 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitted online at www.crimestoppersguelphwellington.com (http://www.crimestoppersguelphwellington.com)

When police announce there is no danger to the community....... it means to me, that her disappearance was caused  mainly by one person, possibly two at the most!!  I can count on it!!  ... Hmmm- let me think.......... ::)
INTERESTING COMMENT FROM POLICE: In the interest and protection of the immediate family, we are not prepared to comment further on that.

What is up?? Why would the family need protection?

Thank you July for posting this.  I guess we will know within the next few days who this 43 year old man is.

By the looks of it, it appears that law enforcement have yet to find her remains.

They must have a fairly strong case to arrest this man.

What is meant by judicial authority?  Place being held for forensics??

Her home address was never given out to the press.  In fact, the family was kept out of it intentionally by law enforcement.

Man accused of killing Seble Dietrich was her husband, friends say

Dozens of supporters of Seble Dietrich gathered outside a courthouse in Guelph on Wednesday, in advance of the first court appearance by her accused killer.

Dietrich, who also used the name ‘Mimi,’ was last seen in July 2014. Her vehicle was found outside the downtown cafe that she owned.

Although she was known to travel outside Canada, friends called the prolonged disappearing “mind-boggling.”

Tuesday night, Guelph Police announced that a 43-year-old Guelph man had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her disappearance.

Stephan Dietrich made a brief court appearance Wednesday. He also faces a charge of obstructing police.

Maintaining a straight-faced expression while wearing a yellow construction shirt and jeans, he asked for the proceedings to take place in German and was told he could request an interpreter.

Stephan Dietrich was Seble Dietrich husband, friends told CTV News.

Police say they have yet to find Dietrich's body, and have set up a presence at an address on Vancouver Drive in connection with the case.

In looking back, I suspect the police did not want her husband to panic, and take the children and leave the country.  So part of doing that was keeping others at arms length.  All the while keeping a close eye on him and his activities.

It wouldn't be the first time that police have taken that tactic in laying charges against a suspect.

Since they found her remains on their property, in all likelihood she was murdered at home.
How tragic for the kids.

This would have given police a first clue - I would bet.

The man accused of murdering his ex-wife in 2014 appeared in a Guelph court Friday.

Stephan Dietrich is accused of first degree murder in the death of his wife, Seble "Mimi" Dietrich in 2014.

He appeared via video from Maplehurst Correctional Centre. Other than identifying himself, Dietrich did not speak. He had long, slicked-back hair pulled into a pony tail and a long goatee.

Friday's appearance at the  Ontario Provincial Offences Court was to set the next date in the legal process that will see Dietrich appear in court Feb. 13 for a resolution hearing to try to resolve some of the issues that might come up at the upcoming pre-trial hearing.

A date for that pre-trial hearing has yet to be set.

Mimi Dietrich, 39, went missing in July of 2014. In June of 2015 her remains were found on the property of the home at 55 Vancouver Dr. where the couple lived with their three children.

Mimi Dietrich operated Sidamo Coffee in Downtown Guelph, participated in a local web-based talk show and was very active in the region's Ethiopian community.

Dietrich was also charged with obstruction of justice.

Stephan Dietrich sentenced to life in prison after murdering wife

Seble 'Mimi' Dietrich was remembered as a 'person with a big heart' by family and friends
Peggy Lam · CBC News · Posted: Nov 23, 2018 7:00 AM ET | Last Updated: November 23, 2018

Guelph police initially treated the 2014 disappearance of Seble "Mimi" Dietrich as suspicious. (Guelph Police Service)
Stephan Dietrich, 46, was sentenced to life in prison by Ontario's Superior Court of Justice on Thursday afternoon.

Dietrich pleaded guilty to killing his wife Seble "Mimi" Dietrich, who died on July 10, 2014.

Initially, she was reported missing. Police said they were treating her disappearance as suspicious and friends canvassed the streets, handing out flyers hoping someone would have information about what happened or where she went.

Stephan Dietrich was arrested and charged with first degree murder the following year — June, 2015.

"I have tried so hard to make sense of this situation, but I haven't been able to do so. I never imagined that I would lose my sister with someone she had trusted and loved more than anything," Helen Wondimagegnehu said as she read a victim impact statement at Dietrich's sentencing hearing.

"Mimi is not only my sister but also my friend, my guide and my second mother to whom I can go with all my problems in my life," she said.

Wondimagegnehu's was one of 10 victim impact statements Elizabeth Maguire, the assistant crown attorney, provided the judge.

Wearing a grey long sleeve shirt and dark blue jeans, Dietrich sat in the witness box during the sentencing hearing. With a beard and a moustache, he had his long grey hair tied in a half-ponytail.

Approximately 40 people filled the courtroom, many of them Mimi's family and members of the Meheret Evangelical Church in Kitchener, the church she attended.

"She was a person with a big heart and a kind, gentle manner ... the other hardest thing for me is knowing the pain and fear that Mimi must have suffered at the time of her murder," said Wondimagegnehu.

A 'deeply spiritual person'

Denny Aschnaki, a member of the Meheret Evangelical Church who also provided a victim impact statement, said six months prior to her death, Dietrich said she wanted to start a charitable organization to help abandoned children in Ethiopia.

Aschnaki described her as "beloved" and said she was "a prominent figure and the most generous person individual."

"Mimi was a daughter, a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a cousin and most all a God loving deeply spiritual person," he said.

Aschnaki said Mimi was also an online Ethiopian talk-show host and was "popular" among the community.

Shifting suspicion
Police said Mimi's remains were ultimately found inside the home she shared with her husband and three children on Vancouver Street in Guelph.

According to court documents, Dietrich got into an argument with his wife in the shed behind the house. He struck her across the head with a shovel. After she fell to the ground, he hit her several more times in the head, causing blunt impact head trauma.

He buried her in the floor of the shed and poured cement over her body.

Investigations revealed that prior to killing his wife, Dietrich had been Googling "divorce in Ontario how long does it take partner missing" and had an affair with a Toronto escort.

After Mimi's murder, Dietrich forged a letter in her name, stating that she had committed adultery and theft so she ran away. He then moved the escort into the family home.

Dietrich lived freely for a year before police arrested him in June 2015. The Crown said he would often "mock" police for being unable to find Seble.

"She was unceremoniously in the backyard...with her children in the house," Maguire said. "For a year, they thought their mother left because she didn't love them."

"He had to destroy her reputation," Maguire said.

Maguire and Dietrich's laywer, Gregory Leslie, proposed a joint submission to the judge, which he accepted.

Dietrich is sentenced to life in prison, and is not eligible to apply for parole until June 2037 at which point he will be 65. Dietrich was also ordered not to communicate with his children and four other members of Mimi's family.

In his statement to the court, Dietrich said, "There's not much I can say. I'm sorry for whatever happened."
