An Ontario woman has died in unknown circumstances while volunteering to help children in the east African country of Tanzania.

Family friend Rev. Brian Goodings of Trinity United Church says Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Collingwood resident Susan Wells, 41, died on Wednesday.

He says Ms. Wells left the town, about 120 kilometres northwest of Toronto, for Tanzania last weekend on a month-long trip, carrying suitcases stuffed full of educational materials for children.

Mr. Goodings says Foreign Affairs has told Ms. Wells’ family that an autopsy has been performed in Tanzania as authorities there try to discover cause of death.

He says the department has informed the family her death was not due to misadventure.

Mr. Goodings says Ms. Wells was an experienced traveller who had gone on numerous trips abroad to help out charities, including five previous voyages to Tanzania, but added that Ms. Wells’ family is devastated.

“They’re just shocked. Shocked. It’s been really horrible,” Mr. Goodings said.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Ian Trites said in an e-mail that a Canadian has died in Tanzania and consulate officials in the city of Dar es Salaam are working with local authorities to gather more information.

The department advises travellers to exercise a “high degree of caution” while visiting Tanzania.

Susan was murdered by somone she trusted and knew. This was not the first time she made this trip. I always think about these charity workers going abroad alone. Nobody should be going to another country by themselves for extended stay. This is not the first time something like this has happened. I have heard of it before when workers were murdered. Very sad for this to happen, to be doing such a thing for humanity and to be murdered while trying to help others. I send my deepest sympathy to Susan's family and friends. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Susan Wells, a Collingwood native who died while volunteering in East Africa, was found with a gunshot wound to her head, says the Tanzania Police Force.

Local police say they have a man in custody, identified only as “Joseph,” who has yet to be questioned. They also say Wells, 41, was known to the man held by police.

“It was the 26th (of November) when we found the body there,” said Arusha Regional Police Commander Sabas said when reached by phone Monday.

Wells, 41, left for Tanzania last week with suitcases stuffed with educational materials for children, said according to a family friend, Rev. Brian Goodings of Trinity United Church. Wells’ volunteering work in the region dates back to 2008, when she volunteered with a charity in the northern Tanzanian city of Arusha.

Goodings said Foreign Affairs confirmed that Wells died on Nov. 28; Sabas, however, said Wells’ body was found on Nov. 26 outside of Arusha. He added that their suspect had been arrested around Kilimanjaro International Airport, roughly 55 km east of the city.

Foreign Affairs declined to comment on report by Tanzanian police. Spokesperson Jessica Seguin said no further details would be given to protect the privacy for the affected family.

Sabas didn’t provide any motive or specifically call it a murder. He said more details would arise when police in Arusha could “interrogate” him.

ps CBC news said the person who was arrested, was a native helper to Susan.
Heard it, but cannot confirm it.
May be another rumour.

Interesting how a source printed a different version - I do believe that the name of the suspect was the same though.

Police investigating murder of unidentified white woman

By Happy Lazaro

Police are investigating the murder of a white woman whose body was found in a farm in Terrat division, south of Arusha city. By the time we went to press the name of the victim, residence or nationality was not known yet.

Arusha’s Regional Police Commander, Liberatus Sabas said the body of the woman estimated to be 30-35 years of age was found on November 26 at about 8:00am. The body, he said, was discovered by residents of the neighbourhood who eventually reported the matter to Police.

He said Police officers who went to the scene found the naked body of the woman had hands tied and a knot extended to the right leg. A blood stained panga (bush knife) was placed on her stomach. According to Police, the body features panga wounds.

RPC Sabas said Police were still investigating the incident and the body of the victim had been placed at the Mount Meru Regional Hospital mortuary.

A communiqué by KK Security Group made available to The Arusha Times describes general characteristics of the victim as: “Age 30-35 years; No visible deformations which could be used for identification; Height – 5 feet  4 inches;  Hair colour – Goldish blond hair which is straight and to the shoulders; Colour of eyes –could not be determined.”
The communiqué dated November 26, 2012 says she was found wearing a cream long sleeve blouse, black bra and one black sock on the right foot.

This 12/04/2012 article mentions both the machete (as disclosed by Arusha Police Cmdr. Liberatus Sabas to CBS) and the gunshot (as told by the Tanzania Police Force to Toronto Star). Canadian officials claim they have not been told the cause of death. The full name of the suspect is Joseph Kimaro, a youth Wells previously worked with.

This 12/07/2012 report says Ms. Wells was murdered shortly after arriving in Kilimanjaro Int'l Airport, Sunday November 25. Authorities believe there are two responsible, and they have one in custody. They say she knew at least one of them and had talked to him previous to arriving. Her body was found near a farm south of Arusha. The police have stated "the main motive behind this brutal killing was money ... Up to this point, it is known that she was not carrying any substantial amount of money." She had raised funds in Canada, solicited friends for cell phones and running shoes.
