An Ottawa coroner has confirmed a package delivered Tuesday to the Conservative Party of Canada's headquarters in downtown Ottawa contained a human foot.

Police removed the foot in a yellow bag during the early evening from the 12th floor of 130 Albert St. after a day-long investigation.

Police were called to the building at 11:20 a.m. ET after a suspicious package was delivered there. Police called for the hazardous materials unit after they noticed what appeared to be blood on the package.

Police called for the hazardous materials unit after they noticed what appeared to be blood on the package.

The Hazmat Unit and Emergency Operations Section inspected the package and determined that there was possibly a human foot in the box, police said. A HAZMAT team was called to the Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa after what looked like blood was found on a package.

Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt said major crimes investigators have taken over the HAZMAT call because if it is a human foot, "There's a body without one."

Package delivered through Canada Post
Pirt said the suspicious package was delivered through Canada Post and police will be tracking its origin.

Ottawa police Sgt. Steve Hodgson told reporters outside the building that the package was still inside.

The RCMP and Montreal police are also investigating the discovery of a human torso in a pile of garbage in the Côte-des-Neiges borough, west of Décarie Boulevard and checking to see if there is any link to the package found in Ottawa.

Hodgson said Conservative Party staff members were shaken up by the incident but in good spirits.

Conservative Party spokesman Fred DeLorey said Ottawa police are investigating and all questions should be referred to them.

Several Members of Parliament said they were caught off guard by the news.

"It's shocking for somebody to do that," said Labour Minister Lisa Raitt. "I'd hate to be the one opening that."

Crazy news.
I've heard of the government wanting an arm and leg off of you....but a foot?   (sorry, but it's soooo creepy, I have to joke about it).

On the serious side, I just caught a bit of a TV show the other day where they were studying foot "prints" to see if they are unique like fingerprints are.  It is not a used practise by Law Enforcement, yet, as it is still being studied.

'Human foot’ left in package at Conservative Party’s Ottawa headquarters

Josh Visser

May 29, 2012 – 3:31 PM ET | Last Updated: May 29, 2012 5:16 PM ET

A suspicious package dropped off at the Conservative Party of Canada’s Ottawa headquarters “possibly” contained a human foot, police said Tuesday.

Police responded to a suspicious package report at about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday at the Conservatives headquarters on the 12th floor at 130 Albert Street.

Officers noticed the package had blood on it and a Hazmat unit determined “there was possibly a human foot in the box,” police said in a statement.

The package is believed to have been delivered by Canada Post and police said the package was at least partially opened by a receptionist on the 12th floor before it was called in as suspicious.

Meanwhile, a human torso was discovered in a suitcase found in a pile of garbage in Montreal Tuesday morning. Police there have been in contact with Ottawa police regarding the potential foot discovery, but have yet to link the two incidents.

Calls to the Tories’ headquarters by the National Post, were not immediately returned.

Police could be seen in the building carrying what looked to be a cooler.

“Conservative Party HQ” quickly became a trending topic on Twitter after the story broke.

Ottawa’s Major Crimes unit is investigating the incident.

Human foot shipped to Tory headquarters in Ottawa, torso found in suitcase in Montreal

Terry Pedwell and Stephanie Levitz, The Canadian Press  May 29, 2012 – 8:07 PM ET

Ottawa — A stunned Conservative receptionist opened a blood-soaked box Tuesday containing a human foot that had been delivered to the party’s headquarters a few scant blocks from Parliament Hill.

The macabre discovery led to a pre-noon call to police and paramedics about a suspicious package. The first officers to arrive on the scene spotted blood splattered on the package and immediately called in the hazardous-material unit. When the specialists opened the package, police found the severed appendage inside.

‘Human foot’ left in package at Tories’ Ottawa headquarters

“Upon arrival, officers noted that the [box] package possibly had blood stains on it,” Ottawa police said in a statement.

‘It’s just awful. I don’t think any of us are thinking this necessarily has anything to with politics’

“The Hazmat Unit and Emergency Operations Section were called and upon further inspection of the package it was determined that there was possibly a human foot in the box.”

Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person.

The horror was not confined to Ottawa. Ottawa police were consulting with their counterparts in Montreal after they discovered a severed torso in a suitcase. Montreal police sifted through a heap of garbage in the city’s west end to see if they might turn up any missing limbs. Authorities in both cities are trying to determine if there might be a link to the foot mailed to Conservative party headquarters.

By late afternoon, a coroner confirmed the foot found in Ottawa was indeed human remains.

The package was taken from the scene in a yellow bag and escorted by police into a minivan waiting by the curb.

Steve Hodgson, a police sergeant who arrived at 130 Albert Street, just three blocks south of Parliament Hill, said the package was delivered by Canada Post and had been partially opened by a receptionist at the party’s 12th floor headquarters, who then called police.

“It wasn’t opened any further. It was our Hazmat Team that eventually took a look at it.”

A Conservative MP who showed up later at his party’s headquarters was horrified by the discovery.

“It’s just awful,” said Brad Trost, who first learned about the incident from TV. He said it was probably someone’s “sick idea.”

“I don’t think any of us are thinking this necessarily has anything to with politics,” he said.

Mr. Trost showed up for a meeting but was told by police it was best to leave.

A woman on the 14th floor of the building said police wearing special protective suits were seen in the building and that employees on her floor were told not to go to the 12th floor. Other workers were also told to stay in their offices.

Outside the party’s headquarters, the intercom rang for hours as police wouldn’t hang up the phone inside until they had finished assessing the scene.

A spokesman for the Conservative party would only say that a suspicious package was sent to their office before referring all questions to Ottawa police.

By late afternoon, three women emerged from the Conservative party offices, one carrying a child, and were guarded by police as they used a washroom.

About half a dozen staff remained in the office as police investigated. They left without speaking to reporters.

Ottawa police say they have found a second body part in a package as they investigate the delivery of a human foot to the Conservative Party of Canada's headquarters in downtown Ottawa.

Police would not say what the body part was, nor where it was found, though they did say it was not found at the Conservative Party offices on 130 Albert St. where the foot was sent.

Media reports said the second package, containing a human hand, was not addressed to the Tory headquarters. Police said the major crime unit continues to investigate.

Police were called to the building at 11:20 a.m. ET after a suspicious package was delivered there. Police called for the hazardous materials unit after they noticed what appeared to be blood on the package.

The Hazmat Unit and Emergency Operations Section inspected the package and determined that there was possibly a human foot in the box. A coroner later confirmed it was a human foot.

Package delivered through Canada Post
Major Crimes Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt said the suspicious package was delivered through Canada Post and conceded it's possible it was sent as a "gruesome message."

The foot was decomposing and there was a stench when a CPC employee opened it, said Pirt. He would not say whether the foot belonged to a male or female.

Police found the second package in the course of the investigation, but would not reveal any more details.

Police are working with Canada Post to determine the origins of the packages and said they may also be in touch with morgues and funeral homes to see if they are missing any body parts.

Ottawa police are also checking to see if their case is connected with an RCMP investigation in Montreal after police there found a human torso in a pile of garbage in the Côte-des-Neiges borough.

News shocks MPs
Sgt. Steve Hodgson said Conservative Party staff members were shaken up by the incident.

Conservative Party spokesman Fred DeLorey said Ottawa police are investigating and all questions should be referred to them.

Several members of Parliament said they were caught off guard by the news.

Right now I'm hoping these parts are from the same person; at least there would only be one victim.

wo human body parts found in Ottawa — a foot mailed to the Conservative Party of Canada headquarters and a hand found at a Canada Post terminal — came from Montreal, police have confirmed.

Police told the CBC's Judy Trinh that the hand was not mailed to the Tory headquarters. They also said Montreal police will now lead the investigation into the hand and foot.

The body parts are also to undergo testing at a Toronto forensics laboratory that will seek to find out if they came from one or more individuals, and if he or she were alive or dead when the amputations occurred.

The parts were discovered after police were called to the party headquarters at 130 Albert St. in downtown Ottawa late Tuesday morning after a suspicious package was delivered.

The hazardous materials unit was called in after it noticed what appeared to be blood on the package.

The package was soon confirmed to contain a human foot that was somewhat decomposed, following an inspection by the coroner.

While investigating the foot, police found a second body part in a package. They have since confirmed the body part was a hand found at a Canada Post terminal at Riverside and Alta Vista drives in south Ottawa.

Package a 'gruesome message'
Major Crimes Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt said the suspicious package was delivered through Canada Post and conceded it is possible it was sent as a "gruesome message."

The foot was decomposing and there was a stench when a CPC employee opened it, said Pirt. He would not say whether the foot belonged to a male or female.

Police said they may also be in touch with morgues and funeral homes to see if they are missing any body parts. Ottawa police are also communicating with Prime Minister Stephen Harper's security detail.

It was earlier believed this case was connected to a similar case in Montreal where RCMP investigated the discovery of a human torso in a pile of garbage in the Côte-des-Neiges borough.

But on Wednesday, police said it is now impossible for them to confirm a link between the two cases.

Public safety minister reacts
The grisly discoveries in Ottawa and Montreal continued to garner reaction on Parliament Hill on Wednesday as questions surround the circumstances of the body parts.

"It's certainly an unusual development and it's not even insofar as homicides go. It's quite an unusual circumstance," said Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau also commented by saying "there's someone sick out there." He also said constituents in his Montreal riding of Papineau are worried about their safety."

Ottawa police have added there could be more body parts in the mail but it is unlikely they are in Ottawa.

So now they are saying that the packages originated in Montreal. But that it is impossible to connect it to the torso they found? Hmmm....

In related news, apparently a NDP MP made comments to the effect of the person who mailed that to the CPC being disgruntled with what the Conservatives are doing to the country. *Ring* Oh hi, Thomas Mulcair here, you're fired. Dolt.

The news is fast breaking online and this is far from over.

Interesting that in his blog he says to start planning your disappearance at least four months before you do disappear.....and I believe I read in one of the news articles that he had lived in a mid rise apartment for about 4 months.
This guy sounds sick and conivving enough to have set his plan in motion just before he moved into his last address.  I wonder if he did.  I wonder if he liquidated assets beforehand, or even if he had anything to liquidate?
I will say he can change his appearance fairly easily, judging by the pictures I saw of him.

Sick, alright.....how do you go from blaming the Conservatives for all your woes, to murdering and dismembering another man and sending his body parts through the mail to them?  That is one of the most twisted things I have heard, this guy must be out of his mind.  Certainly dangerous.
I bet every Cop in several provinces is on the look out....then again, his last address is pretty close to the States, too.

I feel bad for joking in a previous post, but for some reason my mind didn't go in the direction of what the situation really is.

Jobo, just saw that on the news. This guy is so freaky, I hope they catch him soon, a walking timebomb. I noticed a picture of him and he looks like a cross dresser. Whatever the psycho has in mind, I hope they get him before he commits another crime. And the fact that he was reading material and making a compiled document about disappearing without a trace, that is something else. I hope whoever has any info on this guy comes forward with it, because they could be his next victim. Scary and so crazy to have this happen to the postal people and them not realize what is in the package. This is why they should have xray devices when mailing parcels. It could have just as easily been a bomb that was in that package. Gruesome for all concerned. I do hope the police are on this guy's trail and catch him quickly. :o :o :o :o

I researched Luka Magnotta last year when his name was linked with Homolka's. Although he publicly denied the connection in order to end all the rumour and speculation, someone on facebook who appeared to be a relative of his had posted a comment about how they should be left alone and how Karla had paid her debt to society. One thing I observed is that he bears a resemblance to Paul Bernardo, so that could be part of his appeal to Homolka. I understand that Magnotta is a model and porn star and emotionally unstable from what I found out about him, but these charges are a real shock. I wonder if Homolka is once again the devil/puppet master who pulled the strings from the island in the Caribbean where's she's hiding out with her husband and children operating a cloth diaper service?

I wouldn't be surprised if he's left the country by now as he has travelled to various countries in the past.

MONTREAL - In this chain of depraved events orchestrated by a disturbed mind, it turns out that the severed human foot delivered to Tory headquarters was only the latest link.

CAUTION: GRAPHIC CONTENT MAY DISTURB SOME READERS.

Before that, someone repeatedly stabbed a young man with an ice pick. While both killer and victim lay naked, he dismembered the corpse and committed sexual and cannibalistic acts on it.

That same person apparently videotaped the gory scene and posted it on the Internet. The video is now being reviewed by Montreal police, who are investigating a case that has shocked the country.

A man by the name of Luka Rocco Magnotta is wanted in connection with a three-step crime: a killing, a dismemberment and a mailing of body parts to Ottawa. He is believed to be from Toronto and to have repeatedly used aliases and changed his name over the years.

His new name, Luka Rocco Magnotta, has a prolific presence in the darkest corners of the Internet. For nearly two years, it has been notorious among animal-rights activists looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of it online.

He is also a low-budget porn actor.

His online presence is much vaster, however, than bisexual porn videos. Magnotta is listed as a model. He has been romantically linked to sex-killer Karla Homolka — a rumour that he has vehemently repudiated and others have shrugged off.

He is an avid author of online articles.

One article written in 2009, titled "How to Completely Disappear and Never Be Found," shares a six-step process for escaping and shedding one's identity. Another offers tips on how to get into the porn business.

A Facebook page belonging to a self-described model with the same name list a variety of personal heroes. They include pop star Madonna and two Russian leaders: Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin.

"There is such things as Monsters, Demons and Ghosts," says a quote typed onto that page.

"They live inside of us, and sometimes they win."

Police are now on the hunt for a suspect and trying to determine what demon might possibly have possessed a man to commit the acts alleged to have been committed in Montreal.

Their key target is 29-year-old Magnotta.

He has also gone by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov, among others. His multiple identities were confusing enough that even police had to issue a second press release Wednesday after originally identifying him as "Rocco Luka."

The geographic epicentre of their investigation is a grimy apartment building in Montreal's west end.

Magnotta was renting Apartment 208 in the brick mid-rise, by the bustling Decarie Expressway. Behind that building, a man's torso was found Tuesday in a locked suitcase, buried in a pile of garbage.

On the same day, a foot was found in a package opened at Conservative headquarters and a hand was found at an Ottawa postal warehouse — the latter package addressed to the Liberal party.

The building manager told The Canadian Press that Magnotta had been living there for about four months. In the manager's words, he seemed like a nice guy.

Police in masks were combing through the blood-soaked apartment Wednesday, having zeroed in on that particular unit from which a rotten stench was drifting out, says a building resident.

The neighbour said police were showing neighbours pictures of two men — the suspected victim and the homicide suspect.

The packages in Ottawa came from a common source. They carried parts from the same male victim, and they were both mailed from Montreal.

Police shared a few new details about the case Wednesday.

"The suspect and victim knew each other," Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere told reporters. "It isn't linked to organized crime."

It apparently took a few days for anyone to find a body part. A resident in the building described the scene in the trash-filled laneway behind the complex.

"I saw the suitcase and I was tempted to go get it," said Richard Payette, 60. "It didn't look too damaged. I said, 'Maybe I'll go down and get it.' But I changed my mind."

The grisly discovery was made later, by someone else living nearby.

Police were milling about the second-floor apartment Wednesday, where there were still traces of blood and, reportedly, still some body parts stored. Payette said the door of Apartment 208 was left open for part of the day, and the smell of rotten meat was drifting out into the hallway.

The building manager said Magnotta had lived there for four months but hadn't been seen around in a while. He said there were never any complaints about noise in the unit, and that Magnotta passed a credit test to rent there.

"He seemed like a nice guy," said the manager, Eric Schorer.

Police said Magnotta has no criminal record.

What isn't clear is why body parts were mailed to Ottawa, including a foot received at the offices of the Conservative party and a hand found at a Canada Post warehouse.

Finding him might not be easy.

"When making the decision to disappear, it is very important to understand that this is not a process that can be successfully accomplished overnight," said the online disappearance tips, penned under Magnotta's name.

"For best results under normal circumstances, a minimum of four months is really necessary to successfully carry out the heroic actions necessary to leave your old life behind.

"This is certainly not an undertaking to be entered into lightly."

Toronto is probably a good city to hide in...but according to his Blog, his advice is to cut ties with family/friends....so....would he go to Toronto where he has family?
I'd be looking in the States too, but Interpol is involved so they are looking everywhere for him at this point.   I don't think he'll make it through the weekend.

Search for Luka Rocco Magnotta in body-parts case goes international

By The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – 13 minutes ago

MONTREAL - An international manhunt has been launched for a porn actor wanted in a gruesome case of dismembered body parts found in Montreal and Ottawa.

Montreal police have issued a countrywide arrest warrant for Luka Rocco Magnotta, and he has also been added to Interpol's wanted person's list.

There could be unique obstacles in tracking him down.

He has used myriad aliases over the years and legally had his name changed from Eric Clinton Kirk Newman on Aug. 12, 2006, while he still lived in Ontario before moving to Quebec. His online posts also suggest he has a longtime fascination with identity change and escape.

Most recently, the 29-year-old was renting an apartment in a working-class Montreal neighbourhood.

Authorities are now investigating the possibility that he killed a man in that apartment, committed numerous acts on the corpse, dismembered the body and mailed the parts to the offices of political parties in Ottawa.

It was behind that apartment building that police found a torso stuffed in a suitcase in a heap of garbage on Tuesday, after it had been lying there for days.

Also Tuesday, a foot was found in a package mailed to the Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa, and a hand was later found in a package at a postal warehouse in the city.

The package with the hand was addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada, and tests show the three body parts come from the same victim.

A police search is also on for other body parts. Montreal police are investigating the possibility that other parts might have been mailed out.

Magnotta is 29 years old. The average age that a serial killer kills his first victim is...29 years old. He also has described himself as bi-polar whose moods range from normal to depressed to feeling like he can conquer the world. I wonder if serial killers have a higher rate of bi-polar than the general population. He's obviously narcissistic as well, and I have heard of serial killers described that way. Personally I would like to see a program in Canada where serial killers can earn better living conditions by allowing their personalities and brains to be tested so we can learn more about them. The more we learn the greater chance we have of preventing such atrocities. Killing animals and also placing that evidence on the internet is something we really have to take seriously and our justice system has to be able to intervene. I don't think we could find a clearer example than this that a human life could have been saved.

Canadians are safe now that it is confirmed he flew to France after the murder, but Europeans are at risk and I only hope his face gets out there widely in the European media so he can be recognized.

I agree. Name in lights since it appears his porn career wasn't stellar, to say the least. That's gotta suck. 8)

Hopefully the French gendarme is on to him...like they were the mad shooter a while back...oh, sorry, I need to use my INSIDE voice.

I'll be happy when someone catches this freak and then jails him so we can set about NOT giving him the fame and recognition he wants.

Unfortunately we will all have to play into his game until he is caught. Sending body parts to Political parties pretty well insures that. Guess he feels he wasn't noticed enough for his brilliance before and had to show us a little more. I wouldn't think he could make it far or long without help.

Actually, you might not be far off, kathybarnes.....like debbiec said, he does look like he could pull it off.

Now the rumour is he might have gone to France.....if he grew up in Toronto and moved to Montreal, how good could his French be?  (if he even speaks it).  He might stick out like a sore thumb with his Canadian French in France.
His alias's are strange....one sounds like an English name, one a French/Italian name, and another sounds Russian.

I just read on MSN news that the Toronto Cops didn't take a tip about the film seriously.....only the RCMP in Ottawa was interested in the tip.

Homolka rumour ruins model's life

By JOE WARMINGTON, QMI Agency

"I am not dating Karla Homolka."

Luka Magnotta is the man's name and the 25-year-old is almost in tears as he passionately makes this point.

Now that declaration alone from someone might not normally warrant mainstream news coverage.

For example if someone came to our 333 King St. E. building and declared "I did not kill JFK" our security guys like John Culbert and Alan Miller would call the hospital and arrange for the person to see a psychiatrist.

And then along comes Luka Magnotta.

You can look up the name yourself on the Internet and you will find plenty of hits. One of the things you will find on Wikipedia is he also goes by Eric Clinton Newman and yet on his Ontario driver's licence it says Luka Magnotta. He said Eric is his birth name but "I had the name legally changed."

Now there have been rumours around for months that the self-described male model and adult film performer, who boasts of having an addiction to cosmetic surgery, has been linked romantically to the school-girl killer.

NO MYTHS HERE
I didn't take it seriously since the mainstream media does not cover urban myths.

But the rules kind of get blurred sometimes in the Internet world that is 2007 where there are just as many websites saying the hijacked airplanes did not hit the Twin Towers on 9/11 as there are credible news organizations who say they did.

Authenticity and the Internet is actually quite a subject since I predict one day somebody will pull a fast one that will make Orson Welles' War of the Worlds scare look like a high school prank.

With all of this in mind I am listening to my radio Wednesday night and an excellent show by AM 640's John Downs about the pros and cons of the Internet and Google and how it has altered the landscape. One of the callers was Magnotta, who seemed clearly upset about what he was describing as an on-going conspiracy to smear his name. "I have lost modelling jobs and have been receiving death threats," he told Downs. "People are so stupid because I don't even know Karla Homolka."

Magnotta, who showed me e-mails of his turning down other requests from other Toronto media outlets, agreed to meet us here at the Sun building yesterday and you can check out the video on torontosun.com. "I want to set the record straight," he said. "I not only have never dated Karla, I have never even met her."

Yet on the Internet it is rampant with discussion about this -- including on some Karla websites and on some gossip sites too. "I just wish it would stop," he said. "I wish they would leave me alone."

The young man was groggy and shaking as he spoke. "I took some sleeping pills and could not sleep last night," he said. "I have had death threats and someone stole my dog."

He says he thinks it's all because of this crazy rumour which, he claims, he has no idea how it got started. "I think it might be from someone in my past," he said. "I have worked in adult films and I have met lots of people."

We offered to get him some medical help but he declined. "I do have a therapist," he said.

Now I know what you are thinking. It has an Internet hoax feel to it. Either way it just shows the power of the Internet and what can be created on there. But what if it is not a hoax and that this human being is in need of assistance as a result of something posted on there?

"My life feels like it is spinning out of control," he said, his lips quivering.

If there is anyone out there who can help this young man I think this might be the right time to do it.

Meanwhile, I telephoned the kid's modelling agency and they did confirm he was on their roster and it did check out that there is lots of Internet buzz about this subject --including some who suggest it was Luka himself who started all of these rumours.

SMEAR CAMPAIGN

He insists the rumours were not created by him and that he is a victim of a smear campaign. "How would you like it if someone linked you to this?"

He said he's scared to answer his door and is spooked by e-mails and Facebook entries that claim to either be Karla or even her lawyer Sylvie Bordelais, who did not return a call to the Toronto Sun last night.

The latest word on Karla is that she is married and has a child in Montreal and has nothing to do with Luka Magnotta and never did. Hopefully this column today will result in a man getting some help and another crazy urban myth being put to bed once and for all.

It could also serve as another example of just how powerful the Internet really is.

What is unbelievable is how this guy was not arrested in 2011.  Animal Rights groups investigated very disturbing videos of Kittens being killed, and eventually identified Luka as the perpetrator, after GPS coordinates revealed it had originated from the Toronto area, and the suspect was positively identified as Luka Magnotta.  Even after numerous people alerted Police on May 25, in regards to the video, the FBI and Toronto Police dismissed it as being fake, until body parts were mailed to Conservative and Liberal Party headquarters.

I have a feeling this could turn out to be possibly the biggest crime story in recent memory in Canada, perhaps even eclipsing the Homolka murders of 20 years ago.

This freak has been described by a former girlfriend as a narcissistic attention whore (some of the terminology has been proven, by pure definition...) and it is highly suspected that HE started this Homolka business, the rumours, etc. so that he could gain notoriety.

To be honest, I am still waiting for more concrete storyline on things because it all seems disjointed right now and there are different things floating around. I am also keenly aware that to a guy like this the fervour it has created is likely to get him off.

Police Officials "Sure" Magnotta is in France

Posted By: Michelle Rosamrosa@astral.com·6/1/2012 6:57:00 AM

French police say they're actively searching for a Canadian porn actor suspected of killing and dismembering his victim before sending out body parts in the mail.

A senior French police official says he is ``sure'' that Luka Rocco Magnotta is currently in France. Another French police official says Magnotta apparently flew to Paris from Montreal last weekend.

The officials say France's fugitive search unit was ordered to hunt for Magnotta.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about such searches publicly. Montreal police say they believe Magnotta, who is 29, has fled North America. A countrywide arrest warrant has been issued for Magnotta in Canada and he has also been added to Interpol's wanted person's list.

Magnotta is suspected of stabbing and dismembering a victim, videotaping his act and mailing the body parts to the offices of political parties.

On Tuesday, a severed foot was sent in the mail to the Conservative party office in Ottawa. A severed hand was intercepted before it arrived at Liberal party headquarters.
A suitcase containing a human torso was found in Montreal and, on Wednesday, police there named Magnotta as the prime suspect.

I realize that it's a sensational story, but wish the media would stop terming him as an actor vice a participant. Nish

Police launch manhunt for porn actor in body parts caseJune 1, 2012 - 4:11am

By The Canadian Press

UPDATED 5:35 a.m. Friday

MONTREAL — An international manhunt has been launched for a porn actor wanted in a gruesome body-parts case as police announced Thursday that he is believed to have fled the country.

Montreal police have issued a countrywide arrest warrant for Luka Rocco Magnotta, who has also been added to Interpol’s wanted persons list.

The case was making international news as foreign media spreading the story of the Canadian man suspected of stabbing and dismembering a victim, videotaping his act and mailing the body parts to the offices of political parties.

It was clues at the Montreal crime scene that led police to expand their search abroad.

“We found some evidence on the scene,” said Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere. “We found, also, a letter that was posted on a website making us believe he might be gone out of the country.”

He said the suspect may have fled to a different continent — but he would not confirm a report that the likely destination was France.

He did provide some small details on the victim. Police believe it is a man in his 30s reported missing several days ago, whose family lives overseas. Lafreniere said police were still working out the forensic details and were also having trouble contacting the victim’s family.

There could be unique obstacles in tracking down the suspected killer.

Magnotta has used myriad aliases over the years and legally had his name changed from Eric Clinton Kirk Newman on Aug. 12, 2006, while he still lived in Ontario before moving to Quebec. His online posts also suggest he has a longtime fascination with
identity change and escape.

He hasn’t been seen at his apartment for a while.

One neighbour said he last saw Magnotta last Friday.

That neighbour in a second-floor apartment, near Magnotta’s, said he saw the man carrying a box to the post office. The neighbour, Richard Payette, said the box looked like the type that would be used to package hockey skates.

He said he saw Magnotta carry it out of the building about 11 a.m. that day.

Much of the police investigation has focused on that apartment complex, in a working-class Montreal neighbourhood.

Authorities are investigating the possibility that Magnotta killed a man in that apartment, committed numerous acts on the corpse, dismembered the body and mailed the parts to the offices of political parties in Ottawa.

It was behind that apartment building that police found a torso stuffed in a suitcase in a heap of garbage on Tuesday, after it had been lying there for days.

Also Tuesday, a foot was found in a package mailed to Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa, and a hand was later found in a package at a postal warehouse in the city. The package with the hand was addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada, and tests show the three body parts come from the same victim.

A police search is also on for other body parts. Montreal police are investigating the possibility that other parts might have been mailed out.

What police are also doing is downplaying reports of romantic ties between the suspect and Karla Homolka — the convicted killer who has lived in the Montreal area. Media reports had earlier quoted police lending credence to those rumours.

The gossip about Homolka ties is rampant on the Internet, part of a huge online footprint that includes numerous websites produced by the suspected killer himself.

There are numerous websites describing a Magnotta who modelled, made bisexual porn movies, worked as a gay escort in Canada and abroad, and one who raised the wrath of animal lovers by torturing and killing cats.

In one of many online articles written by a Luka Magnotta, the author writes about his struggles with manic depression and experimentation with drugs.

A mainstream media report five years ago suggested Magnotta needed professional help and it cited friends suggesting a theory about how the Homolka rumours actually started: they hinted the attention-hungry young man had spread them himself, on the Internet.

Criminal-behaviour experts contacted by The Canadian Press said the behaviour exhibited by Magnotta clearly fit the profile of a man with a desperate need for attention.

There is a story on a gay and lesbian news site that reports an old girlfriend describing Magnotta the same wayas a narcissist desperate for attention. In that account on the Xtra! news site, she is also quoted saying he spoke constantly about serial killers and was obsessed with Homolka.

“He always wanted to be famous,” the story reported the girlfriend, quoted under a pseudonym, as saying.

“I guess now he is.''

I, for one, will not be watching the video. I fully believe in the media's ability to give a synopsis of its contents.

This isn't a judgement or rebuke of anyone who has, but I believe that the more views it gets the more of a jolly it gives this guy, and I am not about to do that in any way, shape, or form.

I don't wish to view the murder video and think it would be disrespectful to the family of the victim and the  victim himself to circulate and post it. Remember how sensitive the French and Mahaffey families were on that point and understandably so. They eventually were able to have the videos destroyed of their daughters (who were killed by Homolko and Bernardo).

Maybe now that the identify of the victim is released  and we have a picture of the him and know a bit about his life, people can put this into perspective and try to preserve the victim's dignity.

http://www.thestarphoenix.com/news/Mutilation+killer+strike+again+warns+psychiatrist+examined+Paul/6716283/story.html

Quote
OTTAWA — The forensic psychiatrist famed for examining sex killer Paul Bernardo says he fears that the person who killed and dismembered a man in Montreal may kill again.

"If it is sexual and he has gone to this extreme, then I think the risk of killing again in a serial way goes higher," Dr. John Bradford said in an interview. "So that is my worry about this."

Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old self-described porn star and prostitute, is wanted for first-degree murder and for "interfer(ing) with . . . the human remains (of) an unknown person" in connection with the gruesome discovery of body parts in Montreal and Ottawa this week.

A horrifying and graphic video has surfaced that is believed to show both the killing and aftermath of the death linked to the body-parts case. The video, titled '1 lunatic 1 ice pick,' depicts a person killing a man and then committing gross indignities to his naked body.

It also has been alleged that Magnotta posted video on the Internet of himself suffocating and then dismembering kittens.

Bradford is an expert in understanding what makes men commit unspeakable crimes. He is head of forensic psychiatry at the University of Ottawa and recently retired as associate chief of forensics at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre.

He has looked into the minds of some of the most notorious criminals of our time, from the murderous Kray brothers in Britain, to sadistic sex murderers Joseph Fredericks and Bernardo, whom he examined in 1994 before he stood trial for murdering teenagers Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy.

Bradford said he is worried that the suspect is a sadist, with a serious personality disorder, who is "possibly a psychopath."

And after killing once, he may be consumed by an urge to attack again. "People who get to the point of committing sexually-motivated homicides have very strong drives to continue."

And to that end, Bradford said that it's important to understand whether the killing was sexually motivated.

"The sexual component is assumed but until we know what relationship there was between him and this man, who is now deceased, it's speculative. Although there is good evidence to support it (being sexually motivated)," he added.

"Was he in a relationship with this male? We don't have the answer to that. It sounds as though they knew each other. Was this a sadistic homicide against a gay partner?"

Dr. Bradford explained that if a person kills because they are "high on drugs or psychotic," the "drive to kill again is less strong."

He also said it's unlikely that the suspect is mentally ill or psychotic. "Most people with (a) serious mental disorder don't do these types of things." He also said the thought processes of the mentally ill are usually too disordered to carry out such a deliberate publicity campaign.

He notes a couple of elements of this case he considers to be outside the pattern of sadistic killers.

While dismemberment is not "super unusual" — Bernardo and Homolka did it to try to hide their crime — "what is unusual is to start mailing body parts all over the place and record what you are doing as a homicide."

Sexual crimes are frequently recorded on video, Bradford said, but rarely murders. Even those who commit sexually-sadistic homicides (such as Bernardo and Homolka) tend to record only the sex because it is erotic to them.

"It sounds as though the purpose of the video was the homicide itself. It seems planned. He had a video camera set up and does the killing on the video. You have to ask yourself what is the motivation for that. It doesn't sound to be sexual. Is he extremely psychopathic and he wanted to bring himself into a position of tremendous notoriety, to become infamous as a Canadian homicide perpetrator? People with extreme psychopathology would do these sorts of things," he said. "That is my gut feeling."

He also said recording the killing of kittens is a "red flag."

"One of the hallmarks of sadistic behaviour is cruelty to animals."

He said that some early animal killers can go on to carry out some "bizarre and extreme and gruesome killings," and that some of North America's most notorious serial killers started off by abusing animals.

Animal abuse can also indicate the person was a victim of childhood abuse.

Bradford said that necrophilia is mostly associated with "sexual deviation and personality disorder" rather than a mental illness.

"People who commit sexually-motivated homicides, at the high end they go on to engage in necrophilia."

He said it's important for the public to be alerted to these cases, not just to warn them, but also to help them look out for deviant behaviour.

"If you look at studies on sadistic murderers, the number of them that have been cruel to animals is a very significant percentage," he said.

"I think that unfortunately these very horrific things do occur — fortunately rarely — and we should be aware of it, so if somebody is being cruel to animals then somebody knows enough to pay attention."

Police identify Chinese student as victim in body parts caseJune 1, 2012 - 4:11am

By ANDY BLATCHFORD and SIDHARTHA BANERJEE The Canadian Press

UPDATED 6:31 a.m. Saturday

A university student identified as the victim of a gruesome killing and dismemberment was described Friday by his boss as a model employee who never missed a shift — until his sudden disappearance last week.

Jun Lin was a responsible, polite cashier who was friendly with customers in a tough Montreal neighbourhood, said the owner of a convenience store.

Kankan Huang said that’s why he knew something was amiss when the part-time clerk — his only employee — didn’t show up for work last Friday.

Huang said Lin, 33, worked a shift at his corner store the day before he vanished. It was also the last time he saw him.

Police launched an international manhunt this week for a porn actor named Luka Rocco Magnotta in connection with Lin’s death.

Magnotta is also suspected of videotaping himself stabbing and dismembering Lin. The film was later uploaded onto the Internet.

A torso was found earlier this week inside a suitcase that had been left out for garbage collection behind Magnotta’s Montreal apartment building. The same day, authorities found a hand and a foot that had been mailed to political offices in Ottawa.

That appears to behind Magnotta being charged with criminal harassment against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and members of Parliament.

Montreal police issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Magnotta, who has since been added to Interpol’s wanted persons list.

He is also wanted for first-degree murder, defiling a corpse and using the mail system for delivering “obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous" material.

Magnotta has since disappeared and his apartment was found stained with blood. Police believe he may have fled to Europe.

The visibly shaken Huang learned about Lin’s fate while reading the news shortly after police identified him as the slain man.

But he still wasn’t ready to accept that his employee was the victim of a disturbing crime making headlines around the world.

“I’m just shocked and I don’t know if it is true, but I hope it’s not," Huang told The Canadian Press while standing in a cramped aisle inside the store.

“I don’t want to believe this, but sometimes you have to accept the truth . . . we have to accept it, we’ve got no choice.

What can we do?"

Huang said he knew little about Lin because they only had brief chats when changing shifts at the store. The Concordia University student, who worked about 10 hours a week after being hired last August, minded the shop by himself.

“Everything I know is after this accident," said Huang, who handed his store’s security tape over to police on Thursday.

“I knew nothing about his personal life before that."

Montreal police say Magnotta and Lin knew each other and believe the killing happened sometime overnight between last Thursday and Friday.

Lin, a native of China, was reported missing by an acquaintance on Tuesday — the same day the torso was discovered outside Magnotta’s apartment building.

He moved on May 1 into a downtown Montreal apartment, where the concierge said he knew him simply as Justin.

Alfredo Hedriana said Lin also lived with a roommate, who recently left for China for a vacation.

“He’s a good tenant, he’s a decent guy," Hedriana said Friday.

“I heard that there was a body found, but I didn’t pay attention. “But this morning, when I heard that it’s one of my tenants, I was shocked."

Hedriana also said four of Lin’s friends — one woman and three men — came to the building looking for him two days before the torso was found.

Lin also kept a Facebook profile, which referred to him as Patrick Lin.

Only two personal photos, posted in December 2010, can be accessed on the page due to its privacy settings. It is not clear where they were taken.

Concordia said Lin was registered as an undergraduate student in the faculty of engineering and computer science.

“We are saddened to learn of this loss of life and it has affected our community, especially those who knew him," university president Frederick Lowy said in a statement. He added that counselling is available for those who need it.

But the horror surrounding Lin’s death reached beyond the university and Montreal.

The same day the torso was discovered, a severed foot was found in a parcel mailed to Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa. A hand was later discovered inside a package addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada at a postal warehouse in the city.

Preliminary tests show the three body parts came from the same body.

Montreal police issued a Canada- wide arrest warrant for Magnotta, who has since been added to Interpol’s wanted persons list. He is wanted for firstdegree murder, defiling a corpse and on other charges.

Media reports citing unnamed sources have indicated that Magnotta fled to France, but Montreal police would only confirm that he flew to Europe last Saturday.

I agree eyeswideopen - my first reaction is that he never left the country, or if he did, he left briefly to change identities and returned. My intuition also says Vancouver. He lived in Toronto so has some contacts there but I suppose it is likely to blend in - however, people there will be on high alert and I sure wouldnt want to be the police having to follow every single lead as everyone calls in someone that remotely resembles him.
I also question some of the articles with the speculation of WHY he did it. It has nothing to do with the victim. Wrong place wrong time for the late Mr Lin. He had the misfortune to cross paths with a sexual sadist.
I wonder if Magnotta (or whomever he really is) also has a history of  late bed-wetting and arson as a child... combining those with his penchant for torturing small animals is the triad associated with serial killers.
I hope that the LGBT communities are plastering posters of his face all over so that no one else will fall victim to his  sick obsession.

Anastashia thinking along the same lines.  I am kind of waiting to here more about this killers family.  In on article his ex said he wanted to kill his family?  I wonder about that?  I will bet he comes from a family of more than two kids three at the least and he is second born and felt he didnt get all the attention he deserved a real sicko.  I also think he will surface as a female this time. The little paper in one of his home towns is getting the family background information on "Magnotta" out now that the bigger news sources do not have:

http://www.thepost.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3576064

Speaking of arson, there was a 14 year old boy somehow connected to the family who set fire to their house more recently according to that article above, so I wonder if it is a younger half-sibling of Magnotta's and another budding psychopath that the family has produced??

I also saw a reference in the Xtra gay publication to his having told Nina Arsenault (his former transexual lover when he was 18) that he had had a sexual relationship with his mother who is mentally ill.

I'm skeptical that Luka Magnotta could easily pass as a woman. Although he is short at five foot eight, he has large hands and a normally deep male voice and there's no evidence of him having passed for a woman before. He may have feminine features  but he appears to have a lean, muscular build and chest. I think dressing as a woman might actually make him more conspicious if he attempts it.

I have mixed feelings about him appearing as a woman but I do not doubt he has dramatically changed his appearance. He's a "pretty boy" but put some scruff on him and dress him like a cowboy and he would look completely different.

I am starting a new thread because the name of the last thread is no longer up to date and I want to encourage people who have information about these crimes and the victim/killer to be able to find this thread and to participate.

From Wikipedia:

Luka Rocco Magnotta, born as Eric Clinton Newman but also known as Vladimir Romanov or Mattia Del Santo, (born July 24, 1982 in Scarborough, Ontario)is a Canadian male model and pornographic actor. On May 30, 2012, Montreal police issued a Canada-wide warrant, later upgraded to an international warrant, for Magnotta's arrest, identifying him as a suspect in the murder of Lin Jun, a 33-year-old Chinese man who had been reported as missing by his family on May 24, 2012. Lin, originally from Wuhan, was an international student at Concordia University. Parts of Lin's dismembered body were found at three locations in Montreal and Ottawa.

Anyone wanting to get a good idea of who to look for even if disguised should view this interview with Magnotta, noting voice, laugh, mannerisms, raising of the eyebrow etc:

________________________________________________________

Coincidentally Luka Magnotta (born 1982) and serial killer Paul Bernardo (born 1964) were both born in Scarborough. They two bear a striking resemblance to one another in their facial features although Magnotta has had some facial surgery. There are unsubstantiated reports that people have contacted the media indicating that Magnotta's mother Anna Yourkin (what is her maiden name?) knew Paul Bernardo. (see http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/2012/06/01/warmington-one-big-ripper-game) Anna Yourkin reportedly gave birth to Magnotta in Scarborough while she was still a teenager. Paul Bernardo was reportedly single and sexually active in the timeframe leading up to Magnotta's birth when he would have been 17 years old. Is it possible Bernardo was Magnotta's father although Magnotta's real father is reported to be Donald Newman (also a teen at the time)? There is however, a significant height difference between the two men with Bernardo over six feet tall and Magnotta a mere five foot eight.

To complicate matters, Paul Bernardo's biological father's name has never been released, has it? His mother reportedly had an affair while married, resulting in his birth. Is it possible that the lineage was passed on, not through Bernardo directly, but via his unidentified biological father in Scarborough through to Magnotta's father's (Newman) or mother's family somehow also from Scarborough?

As unlikely as these theories may sound, they are no crazier than half of the stuff reported on the case by the media so far based on internet rumour and conjecture. Let's not forget that psychopathic killers do pass on their genes as we have seen recently in the murder of Kimberly Proctor by a teenage boy who is the son of a convicted rapist/murderer.

Now google several pictures of Bernardo and Magnotta and tell me if you see the resemblance? Remember, you read it here first!

I thought he found out his biological father's last name was "Teale".  Wasn't that why he changed it to Teale?

I could be wrong...  could have my Scarborough murderers mixed up.   :-\

According to one source --

"They (Bernardo and Homolka) chose the name Teale after the serial killer Martin Thiel in the movie 'Criminal Law'. Paul chose Jason for his new middle name, from the character in the 'Friday the 13th' movies. Their request for change was approved on Feb. 12, 1993, five days before he was arrested."

I'm surprised there haven't been any sightings of Magnotta yet (at least on airplane, airport etc.), with all this news coverage.

Sure he needs to by groceries and rent living quarters but if he is disguised they wont know it is him.  In my opinion he is generic looking and can make him self look any way he wants.  He may be smart , but he will get tired and make a mistake.  He would stand out in a foreign county is my though while in Canada he could make him self fit anywhere.  There are always lots of sightings of Missing or wanted people but that doesnt mean it is him.  Do you have a link to where it says he was sited in Paris????? Thanks.

He would have something like a bunker set up so he doesnt have to leave for a month or two - enough time that he could grow out hair/facial hair and his face wont be plastered all over the news.

I dunno, it seems pretty arrogant to go mailing body parts to political parties, doesn't it?

He would have had even more time to do all of the things you mentioned had he not tried to garner attention. And in most places of the populated world, someone digging a bunker would certainly attract attention. And he doesn't strike me as the blue collar type.

Nish - the mailing of body parts is narcisstic and he is attention seeking... Zodiak.. BTK... there are numerous serial killers that were bold and some not caught at all.
I did not imply he dug himself a bunker... with the right provisions I could go a month without leaving my home. Remember his instructions on how to disappear... it takes 4 months of setting up and planning. In the 4 months he very well could have set up a safe haven.

Nish - yes, by definition those are arrogant quantities, I mean that it is still fairly early in the "game" and while I have been studying serial killers for the last 15 years I am certain he has been doing the same. My interest in serial killers is a far cry off from his. I have no doubt that ego will get him caught. I do think it is far too soon for him to be bold enough to completely screw up. He wants his name known since he couldnt do it at porn (Like the above article says - who fails at that????) he tried to gain notoriaty off of Karla Homoka. I believe that he has studied some of the best (?? use that term loosely) serial killers and have learned their downfalls. His ego will get in the way - again, I have no doubts. I just dont believe it will be this soon.

Since you mention studying serial killers, I would liken Magnotta to a gay version of "The Dating Game Killer" Rodney Alcala http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dating_Game_Killer.  This guy is positively frightening and like Magnotta was very good looking in his younger years when he was killing numerous women and girls. He once appeared on the popular tv show "The Dating Game" just as Magnotta has appeared on television shows when he's had the chance. He won the competition based on his verbal charm but the woman declined to date him, finding him too creepy.

Magnotta is obsessed with photos of himself and Alcala was also into photography, but took reams of photos of women. We still don't know to this day what happened to some of the women in his photos and whether they might be some unknown victims. Alcala had the insane arrogance to represent himself in court so he could get even more time to showcase himself centre stage. Imagine the insanity of such a monster actually cross-examining the grieving mother of one of his child murder victims on the witness stand! Like Alclala, Magnotta's narcissistic arrogance will stop at nothing.

We can only hope that Magnotta will not get away with slipping between the cracks/moving/changing names the way Alcala did to kill and kill again.

I was thinking the same thing about the Paris sighting.  I have yet to see any concrete proof (CCTV, photos, etc.) that he is indeed in France, or was spotted on an airplane heading for France.  If you think about it, Americans were watching footage of the WTC hijackers boarding their flights just one day after the 9/11 disasters.  Additionally, this guy wrote blogs on how to disappear, and one thing that stands out is his advice of planting evidence to people indicating you are going one direction, then go in the exact opposite direction.

I'm not sure how much media coverage this case is getting in France, but I assume it would be a fairly big news story.  People often have the tendency to report sightings of any suspicious people that have a resemblance to the wanted man, even if it is just a coincidence.  I also think Luka would have a hard time blending into Paris, even if he is fluent in french, as the Quebec accent is noticeably different than the French accent.  Additionally, he would be unfamiliar with the country and the culture, so he would stand out to the average Parisian.

Re: Pic in National Post.  At first, I didn't think it could be him as that would be too simple.  Surely he wouldn't be that stupid to go without a better disguise. However, when I look at his arms and his hands, it very well may be him.
He has feminine sized hands and arms, and the way that he sweeps with them is very expressive and this is the is the first thing I noticed about him  in other pictures.  So it just may be him.
I wonder where he is getting his money from?  even to buy an airline ticket.  He served time in jail for fraud. Perhaps he using peoples credit/debit cards, etc.

In the past, to check into any hotel in France, you had to produce your passport, or some other officia ID,  so he may stay in a "room for rent" no questions asked type of place.

If his face is plastered all over the airwaves in France, they will catch him.  Hopefully, he hasn't headed "out west" LOL

And of course he had to produce one of his many passports to board the plane as well and there would be a record of that in the system. Don't forget that the picture may not look that clear to us, but to someone viewing the original camera footage it was probably much clearer and allowed the police to confidently identify Magnotta.

Suspect in body-parts case arrested in Germany

Berlin police spokesman confirms arrest

A Canadian man who is accused of dismembering his murder victim and mailing body parts to political parties has been arrested in Germany, police confirm to CP24.

Stefan Rieldich, an English-speaking spokesperson for the Berlin police department, told CP24 that they were "positive" they had suspect Luka Rocco Magnotta in custody.

"We arrested him today," he said.

Police said Magnotta was arrested at around 2 p.m. local time near an Internet cafe. An officer checked his identification and made the arrest.

Rieldich said he couldn't confirm whether Magnotta was arrested inside or outside the cafe.

He said he also didn't know if Magnotta resisted arrest or if he gave his name willingly to officers.

"The information is brand new and I'm still trying to get more details on the arrest," he said. "As far as I know is that somebody recognized him and called police or that police recognized him."

Rieldich said the department was making efforts to speak with their federal police service, who would then contact Canadian authorities.

Magnotta was in the process of being brought to one of Berlin's prisons at the time CP24 spoke to Rieldich at 11:09 a.m. EST.

"He will be held until all of the questions will be answered in terms of who is looking for him," he said.

Rieldich confirmed that Magnotta would make a court appearance on Tuesday.

Wanted for murder

Magnotta allegedly fled to Europe on May 26 and was spotted in Paris over the weekend.

The 29-year-old low-budget porn actor is accused of killing and dismembering Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese National who was attending university in Canada. Authorities believe Lin was killed either on May 24 or May 25.

The suspect is also accused of mailing the victim's body parts to Canadian political parties. The gruesome murder came to light after a staffer working at the Conservative Party headquarters opened up package that was delivered to the office. Police later said the package was stained with blood and contained a human foot inside.

Police later intercepted another package meant for the Liberal Party which contained a human hand. The victim's torso was found in a discarded piece of luggage in Montreal. DNA testing confirmed the body parts were connected and police were able to positively identify the victim.

Soon, there were rumours that the suspect filmed the murder and posted it on the Internet. Police told the media that they had seen the video and believed in its authenticity.

The video, which is nearly 11 minutes long, shows a suspect, wearing all black with his face disguised, killing a naked man who is tied up on the bed. At first the victim's face is also covered. The video is a gruesome depiction of a violent murder and disturbing sexual assault.

Magnotta is wanted for first-degree murder, committing an indignity to a body, publishing and mailing obscene matter and harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper along with other members of parliament.

Canadian porn actor suspected of murder, mailing victim's body parts arrested in Berlin

By David Rising,Juergen Baetz, The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – 2 hours 55 minutes ago

BERLIN - A 29-year-old Canadian porn actor accused of videotaping a killing and mailing the victim's body parts to the country's top political parties was apprehended Monday in Berlin after an international manhunt, putting up no struggle while conceding to arresting officers: "you got me."

Luka Rocco Magnotta was picked up internet cafe in Berlin after an employee ran outside and flagged down a passing police vehicle, police spokesman Guido Busch said.

The owner of the cafe, in Berlin's working-class Neukoelln district, told The Associated Press that Magnotta had come in to read news reports about himself when one of his employees recognized him.

"A colleague recognized him from his photo, because he'd just read the newspaper," said the owner, who spoke on condition that he not be identified by name.

He said the police happened to be outside at the time, and the employee alerted them and they arrested Magnotta at about 2 p.m. without difficulty.

"Nothing happened, it all went very quietly," he said.

Busch said seven officers entered the cafe and confronted Magnotta.

"He tried at first giving fake names but in the end he just said: 'you got me,'" Busch said. "He didn't resist."

Magnotta is wanted by Canadian authorities on first-degree murder and other charges. He is suspected of killing Jun Lin — a 33-year-old Chinese university student he dated — and mailing Lin's body parts to Canadian political parties.

Julie Carmichael, a spokeswoman for Canada's Public Safety Minister, confirmed the arrest.

"We expect that the individual responsible for these troubling acts will face the full force of the law," she said.

The suspect is now being questioned, and will be brought before a judge behind closed doors who will read out the international arrest warrant later, police spokeswoman Kerstin Ziesmer said.

"He says he is the wanted person," she added, while cautioning that his identity must still be independently confirmed by German authorities.

Even if Magnotta contests extradition, there are not expected to be any major hurdles to have him returned to Canada. One such factor would be the possibility he could face the death penalty, but Canada does not have capital punishment.

Busch said it will take several days before Magnotta is ready to be extradited, but that he could be returned by the end of the week.

Magnotta is believed to have fled to France on May 26 based on evidence police found at his apartment, and he had been placed on Interpol's most-wanted list.

The case began last Tuesday, when a package containing a severed foot was opened at the ruling Conservative Party headquarters. A hand was discovered at a postal facility, addressed to the Liberal party of Canada. A torso was found in a suitcase on a garbage dump in Montreal, outside Magnotta's apartment building.

Police suspect Magnotta filmed the murder. The video, posted online, shows a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up. The first man later reveals he has slashed the other man's throat. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it.

An online video also shows a man who looks like Magnotta committing violent acts against kittens. The video contains at least one photo made available by Montreal police that identified the man as Magnotta.

For nearly two years, animal-rights activists have been looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of it online.

Police said Magnotta's birth name is Eric Clinton Newman and that he is also known by the name Vladimir Romanov, and they described him as white and 5 feet 8 inches tall (1.78 metres) with blue eyes and black hair.

Luka Rocco Magnotta could spend a year in German jail before returning to Canada
Kathryn Blaze Carlson  Jun 4, 2012 – 3:31 PM ET | Last Updated: Jun 4, 2012 5:20 PM ET

Luka Rocco Magnotta could spend an entire year in a German prison before returning to Canada to face allegations of murder here, as part of what one leading extradition expert called an “unprecedented” judicial circumstance involving a Canadian national arrested in Germany.

Mr. Magnotta was arrested in Berlin Monday afternoon after an employee at an Internet cafe spotted the fugitive reading stories about himself on a computer and flagged down a police car.  The 29-year-old Montreal man surrendered without incident to seven Berlin police officers, admitting “You got me” after giving a false name first.

It is believed Mr. Magnotta travelled from surburban Paris to Berlin via bus sometime over the weekend.  Mr. Magnotta is due to appear in a Berlin court tomorrow, as Canadian officials make the extradition request.

Good call, Mom.   I think I recall hearing about another criminal being caught the same way, in an Internet Cafe.
I suppose physcopaths are so full of themselves they think they are untouchable.

I will guess he did NOT have much of a plan once he got to Europe....he certainly had nowhere to hide.  I really think he didn't plan much past leaving Canada.

I had faith that he would be caught by the end of the weekend, and I was off by a few hours!

Something is really wrong with the system if the Animal Rights Activists had been looking for him for 2 years.  Why didn't the RCMP or OPP or whatever Law Enforcement Agency help the Animal Rights Activists?   Wouldn't they be able to trace him through his IP address?  Or did the Law Enforcement not want to waste their time?
Even the first Cop approached in Germany did NOT believe the Internet Cafe Tipster....he had to flag down a second Cop.
The Toronto Police did NOT believe the lawyer from the States that had provided a tip about the online Video of the murder of Lin. (they say they told him to call Crimestoppers).

It is unbelievable the indignities he performed on Lin.  I think Lin was drugged, and pretty much out of it (thankfully) before Magnotta killed him.
I am so sorry to Lin's family that they lost him in such a brutal, sick, disturbing way.  I am sad a young man came from China to go to one of Canada's top Universities and had to meet up with such a demented person.  RIP Lin

Magnotta and Mark Twitchell (Edmonton) have the same sickness. Although with Twitchell, cannibalism was not part of his killing.  Twitchell was a movie maker, and created a snuff film. The victim was an Edmontonian.  In fact if you watch CBC tonite, Monday, you will see the documentary on Twitchell.
I wonder what the stats are for Canadians, who produce such monsters??
What is the percentage of our Canadian population who fall into such a category? I don't think psychopath can even begin to describe it, unless there are certain degrees of depravity.  He is definately over the scale of 10.
It stands to reason that we have more out there - male and female.

Very often, we the public, and family members do not report it, for different reasons.  The public?  They don't want to get involved, or think that it is a sick joke.
The family?  Ever hopeful that this sick person will not enact, and are afraid for their own safety, themselves and their children.
Mark Twitchell?  His wife banished him to live in a room in the basement even before the killings.
Their marriage was obviously finished for whatever reason.  She was totally unaware of his doings.

How awful that his victim was from China, my what a shock this must be for his parents!
I feel so sorry for them.  I am sure that Welcome to Canada, will not have the same meaning to them.
I am so sorry for them.  Son's are very precious to them. And for the most part, they are only allowed one child.

Montreal police have revealed disturbing details about their investigation into a murder and dismemberment case that has drawn international attention during a global manhunt for the suspect.

Suspect Luka Rocco Magnotta is now in a Berlin jail awaiting extradition to Canada on first-degree murder charges, after a global dragnet tracked him down in the German capital early this week.

Magnotta, 29, is suspected of killing Jun Lin, a Chinese university student in Montreal, and mailing his body parts to Canadian political parties.

On Tuesday, Montreal police revealed some of the evidence linking Magnotta to the alleged crime — including video surveillance from his apartment building and a nearby Canada Post outlet.

DNA test results confirm what police have known "99.9 per cent" since last week — that human remains sent to federal political parties and found in a Montreal trash pile are from the same body, said police Cmdr. Ian Lafrenière.

Investigators say they also have evidence of cannibalism.

"As gross and as graphic as it could be, yes, it was seen on the video," said Lafrenière.

Police still need to "absolutely prove" the authenticity of said video, although investigators "believe it is. Now we have to prove it," he said.

Lafrenière said some body parts are still missing from the remains, but they are not in the Canadian postal system.

Investigators are now combing through open homicide cases in the Montreal area, and possibly in other regions, as other police forces "have been in touch," he said, declining to specify which agencies.

What is "particular, specific is the modus operandi, the way [the crime] happened," Lafrenière said. "We'll look at possibilities, and now we're working on different cases."

Magnotta caught reading stories about himself
Magnotta is wanted by Montreal authorities on first-degree murder and other charges, including threatening Canadian politicians, in a case that spawned one of the largest manhunts in Montreal police history.

He was arrested at an internet café in Berlin on Monday, when he was reportedly reading media stories about himself.

Berlin prosecutors said Magnotta has no intention of fighting extradition, however, it was unclear how long it would take to return him to Canada.

A German judge visited Magnotta in a Berlin jail Tuesday to speak about his detention and the procedure for extradition.

Following that meeting, Magnotta was moved to a state prison, CBC's Nahlah Ayed reported.

Chief Supt. Stefan Redlich of the Berlin police told CBC News that Magnotta chose to be placed in solitary confinement rather than be held in a cell with other prisoners.

The prisoner ate dinner Monday night, slept well and had breakfast Tuesday morning without incident, he said.

Lin's torso was found inside a suitcase outside a Montreal apartment on May 29, the same day body parts addressed to the offices of the Conservative and Liberal parties in Ottawa were discovered.

Magnotta was identified as a suspect the following day.

Montreal police believe Lin, a 33-year-old university student, was killed sometime around the evening of May 24 or early May 25. A video that apparently captured some of the act was posted to an online gore site on May 25 and circulated across the internet for several days.

Police in Montreal confirmed to CBC News that they are investigating the owner of the website where a video allegedly depicting the killing was posted.

This is horrible. I hope the find all the pieces for the family so they can have closure. Also so he is put to rest properly. A lot of Asian traditions dictate that the body has to be whole or together for a proper afterlife. And even if that isn't the case for his family, it still would be a good thing.

Just found this in the Vancouver Province:

False Creek Elementary School in Vancouver, B.C. received a package containing a human hand on June 5, 2012. A similar package containing a human foot was sent to St. George's as well. Vancouver police are investigating and have been in contact with Montreal police.Photograph by: Steve Bosch , PNGAuthorities in Montreal have made contact with investigators in Vancouver to see if there is any link between the body parts mailed this afternoon to two Vancouver-area schools and the disturbing Luka Rocco Magnotta case.

Montreal Police Service spokeswoman Const. Ani Lemieux told The Province her department’s Major Crime Squad has been in discussions with the Vancouver Police Department to determine if there is a link between the grisly findings in Vancouver and the Magnotta file.

“We are trying to see if there is a link to be made,” Lemieux said.

She added that an arm, leg and the head of a Chinese student believed to have been slain by Magnotta have not been recovered.

Vancouver police say a staff member at False Creek Elementary School opened a package at 1 p.m. this afternoon and discovered what appeared to be a human hand.

Staff at St. George’s School later opened up a package containing what appeared to be a human foot.

Vancouver police and the B.C. Coroners Service are trying to determine the identity of the victim and the origin of the packages.

The two schools remain cordoned off with police tape.

James Gemmill has a child at False Creek Elementary and learned about the incident on Twitter.

He hadn’t received any information about it from the school or the Vancouver School Board.

“I understand this happened a few hours ago, and staff and teachers must have been shocked, but it would be good information to pass on to parents,” he said.

Gemmill was waiting to hear more and speak with his wife before deciding whether they should be concerned about keeping their child in school.

“Who knows? We need more information, whether it’s connected to Montreal [the Luka Magnotta case] or even a copycat, which would be even more troubling.

“We’ll just wait for more information from the police, I guess.”

Vancouver police said there is no indication that any of the students and staff at either school have been targeted.

I don't get this. It seems extremely random and non-sensical for Magnotta to send body parts to a public and private school in Vancouver of all places. There is no connection between those targets and the Liberal and Conserviate party headquarters. I only hope it is not a west coast copy cat killer at work!

Reminds me of the Jeffrey Dahmer case in the U.S.   Dahmer was found guilty of 15 counts of murder, given 15 life terms (totaling 957 years in prison) in Wisconsin, then another murder in Ohio. Maybe another murder as well. Rape, dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism. He started his murders in 1978 to 1991.  Attacked young boys and men, drugged them and did unspeakable things to them. If I recall correctly, his jail mates didn't quite like the idea of rooming with a cannibal. I believe he was attacked once in prison while returning to his cell and then a second time while doing prison chores, was attacked with a broomstick and died on the way to the hospital.

I wonder how German prisons are, much less what the Canadian prison would be like. Would he be well received?

When you google Vancouver elementary schools, a list appears and strangely St. Georges private school and False Creek school do follow one after the other, though they are not the first on the list. They have nothing in common one being private and the other public, except that they are both on the west side, but they are not the closest schools geographically to eachother. I can only assume if these packages came from Magnotta, he googled and chose the two schools at random that followed eachother on the list.

There is a weird logic in shipping body parts to Vancouver because it allows him to continue to terrorize the country over time, even having some power and control after he left the country and after his arrest! Choosing elementary schools only because it potentially brings the idea of innocent children into the horror show and alarms people all the more...?

Human foot found in Montreal neighbourhoodCBC News Posted: Jun 6, 2012 9:04 AM ET Last Updated: Jun 6, 2012 9:18 AM ET

A human foot was found in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood today, a day after human remains were received in the mail by two Vancouver schools.

Montreal police are releasing few details, but said the remains were discovered by a passerby on St-Jacques Street near Connaught Avenue at 7:38 a.m. ET.

Police have blocked off the area.

Investigators said it is too early to say if there is any connection to the investigation of Luka Rocco Magnotta, who was captured in Berlin earlier this week and is awaiting extradition to Canada following an international manhunt.

Magnotta is wanted in Montreal in the brutal killing of a university student from China.

Luka Magnotta has no idea what awaits him in Canada.  He may think this crime is going to make him a household name, but what he doesn't know is inmates will not respect him.  He will have to spend his life in protective custody, since the prison population will definitely not fear him, and look to rough him up.  It amazes me that Hollywood only talks about the crimes of sociopathic killers, and not the aftermath of what awaits them in correctional facilities.  If  only these nuts knew what life will be like for the remainder of their lives, they would definitely be discouraged from partaking in this kind of gruesome crimes.

I read that Magnotta asked to go into solitary confinement (over there in Germany) rather than in with the general population.  So, he is scared, figures.  And since when do killers get to call the shots in jail?   geesh.
I was thinking a body part would show up on the East Coast now.....time will tell.

This poor family. There are no words to describe what they are going through.

Jun Lin family's Montreal arrival 'heartbreaking'

CBC – 11 hours

Family members of Jun Lin, the Chinese man allegedly killed and dismembered by Luka Rocco Magnotta, have arrived in Montreal under intense media attention, while the victim's friends rally to support them.

Yan Shi, head of Concordia University's Chinese Student Association, was among the delegation of people that greeted Lin's family at the Trudeau airport.

He described their "heartbreaking" arrival as Lin's mother openly struggled with her grief.

"She was not even able to even walk straight, so we had to carry her," Shi said. "When we tried to understand what she was saying, all we could make out was, 'We come here to take you home.' "

Community fundraising efforts are underway to help alleviate the possible financial burden related to the tragedy.

Chinese students at Concordia have set up a fund — the Lin Jun Rest in Peace Foundation — to help defray family's expenses while they're here, which is expected to be two or three weeks.

In an interview with CBC Montreal, a close friend of Lin described him as an ambitious, hard-working young man who loved his new life in Canada.

"He was a very nice person, very open-minded. He enjoyed making jokes with us." said Matty, 24, who only wanted his first name used.

"I just want people to know he was good to his friends, and he was a good student. I know his marks at Concordia were around A's."

Lin worked long hours in China to support himself and save enough money to come study in Montreal, where "it's not cheap, it's pretty expensive for Chinese people."

"His life was not easy," but he was happy, Matty said.

Lin's mother, father, sister and uncle have already met with Montreal police and Concordia officials, who offered to hold a school memorial in his memory.

Community members in Montreal are also remembering Lin by dropping off cards at the Pointe-Saint-Charles corner store where Lin used to work. His boss, Kankan Huang, said he has collected dozens of cards so far.

At a press conference in Montreal, police Cmdr. Ian Lafrenière said authorities will be in "ongoing" contact with Lin's family to provide assistance.

"This is a horrible ordeal they’ve been put through,” he said Wednesday.

Magnotta, 29, is awaiting extradition in Germany on a number of charges, including first-degree murder, mailing obscene material and committing an indignity to a human body. He was arrested in Berlin earlier this week following an international manhunt.

He is accused of killing Lin, filming and uploading a video of the alleged act to the internet and sending Lin's remains through the mail.

Magnotta's court-appointed German lawyer, Evelyn Ascher, told CBC News she has advised him to hire a top criminal attorney in Canada, and to refrain from saying anything about the charges until he is extradited.

"He was not nervous. He was kind of sad, maybe, and he was in a new situation," Ascher said, after meeting with Magnotta this week.

The Canadian man is reportedly very concerned about his personal safety while he is held in prison in Berlin.

"He is afraid that he gets attacked by other prisoners, because he is in all newspapers, as a really, really bad person, described as a devil," Ascher said.

Ascher, a criminal specialist, said she didn't know anything about Magnotta or the case when she was first asked to represent him.

Sources told CBC News that Magnotta has agreed to a simplified extradition process, and that German authorities have given his case the "utmost priority."

Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese national who was attending Concordia University in Montreal, was last seen on May 24.

His torso was found inside a suitcase outside a Montreal apartment on May 29, the same day body parts addressed to the offices of the Conservative and Liberal parties in Ottawa were discovered.

Magnotta was identified as a suspect the following day.

Police believe Lin was killed sometime around the evening of May 24 or early May 25. A video that apparently captured some of the act was posted to an online gore site on May 25 and circulated on the web for several days.

Investigators in Montreal said Tuesday that some of Lin's remains were still missing. Later that day, a hand and a foot were delivered to two elementary schools in Vancouver.

Cmdr. Lafrenière said Wednesday police are working to confirm that the remains found in B.C. are Lin's, although it appears likely. Vancouver police are sending the remains to Montreal and are handing the investigation over to officers there.

Magnotta has a previously known connection to B.C.: When he filed for bankruptcy in 2007, he owed $10,000 to a car leasing company in a Vancouver suburb. It emerged Wednesday that he also spent time in the province shooting a porn film in 2003.

Lafrenière also said police continue to search for Lin's head.

"We’ve been working extremely hard to find all of the body parts out of respect to the family," Lafrenière said. "They're going to have a hard time to live with this now."

Magnotta May Be Investigated in US Murders

Posted By: Suzette Francissfrancis@astral.com·6/7/2012 9:52:00 AM

Montreal murder suspect Luka Magnotta, may be investigated in two unsolved murders in the United States.

According to British newspaper, the Sun, Magnotta is being investigated for two separate murders, one in Los Angeles and the other in Tucson, Arizona.

Body parts of a gay retired airline worker, were found, under the Hollywood sign in L.A. earlier this year. So far the case is unsolved, but the paper suggests Magnotta worked in L.A. as a so-called rent boy, a male prostitute, at the time of the killing.

The paper also reports, a dismembered body was found in Tucson, 6 days before the Hollywood murder. According to the Sun, Magnotta's online profile shows, he also spent time in that state.

So we do potentially have a serial killer on our hands. I was starting to wonder if more cases and investigations would come up.

http://www.thestarphoenix.com/news/Luka+Rocco+Magnotta+likely+extradited+from+Germany+June/6745029/story.html

Quote
BERLIN - German prosecutors said Thursday the Canadian porn star accused of the grisly killing and dismemberment of a Chinese student in Montreal last month will likely be extradited by the end of June.

"We hope that he can be extradited by the end of the month," a spokesman for the Berlin public prosecutor's office, Martin Steltner, told AFP following the arrest of Luka Rocco Magnotta in the German capital on Monday.

Steltner said the first official step in the extradition procedure should be taken later Thursday.

"Berlin prosecutors will submit the extradition request for Luka Rocco Magnotta to Berlin's higher regional court, which is to examine whether it complies with the law," he said.

If the court upholds the legality of the request, the public prosecutor would then submit it to the German government for a routine examination of whether the penalty the suspect would face in his home country could violate his human rights, Steltner said.

Germany does not extradite to countries that have the death penalty, which Canada does not.

The 29-year-old Magnotta was picked up in a Berlin Internet cafe looking up online articles about himself after a witness tip ended a 10-day-long international manhunt while he was on the run to Paris and then Berlin.

He is awaiting extradition to face charges in Canada of murdering 33-year-old Chinese student Lin Jun, believed at one point to have been his lover.

Magnotta allegedly filmed himself on the night of May 24-25 killing Lin with a pickaxe and dismembering the body before sending a foot and a hand to the headquarters of Canadian political parties, including the ruling Conservatives.

Canadian police said Wednesday they were probing a macabre new twist in the case after further body parts sent from Montreal turned up at Vancouver schools. It was not immediately clear whether the limbs belonged to Lin.

A torso, which has been identified as belonging to Lin, was discovered in a suitcase outside Magnotta's apartment building, but his head and his second hand and foot were all unaccounted for before Tuesday.

A series of new videos from Magnotta - likely filmed after the murder - have surfaced on the Internet and appear to be authentic, according to police.

In one, posted on the video-sharing site YouTube, a seemingly cavalier Magnotta is seen smoking and says, "what's up and hi to all my fans," while Madonna's song "La Isla Bonita" plays in the background.

Police called the initial video showing the murder "sordid" and said the crime scene was virtually covered in blood.

Lin had been studying computer science in Montreal before his gory death.

His grieving parents, accompanied by his sister and uncle, arrived in Montreal late Tuesday from China to meet with Chinese diplomats, police and university administrators, the Chinese consulate told AFP.

Vancouver police said the packaging and addresses on the boxes sent to two schools there, in the far west of the country, were similar to those on the parcels discovered at the political offices in eastern Canada.

Montreal police spokesman Ian Lafreniere told reporters that a note was included with one package sent to a Vancouver school, as well as one of the packages delivered to Ottawa, but did not discuss the contents of the notes.

After a warrant was issued for Magnotta's arrest, local media reported that a note sent with a severed foot to Conservative Party headquarters indicated that more body parts had been sent in the mail, and that the person who dismembered the victim would kill again.

Magnotta, who has been dubbed the "Canadian Psycho" and the "Butcher of Montreal," fled Canada on May 26, initially to Paris, before boarding a bus to Berlin on Friday.

Canadian authorities said he will face charges of first-degree murder and committing indignities to a body. He is also expected to be charged with publishing and mailing obscene matter to Canadian politicians.

Magnotta, who has worked as a bisexual porn star and as a gay prostitute called "Angel," has changed his name and used several aliases. He had several fraud convictions on his record.

A series of judge-imposed conditions reportedly banned him from owning or using a camera or a computer, and from accessing the Internet.

Germany's daily Bild, reporting on Magnotta's past, said he was a high school graduate who had grown up with his grandparents.

I feel so bad for the family of the young man who was savagely murdered and dismembered. The incredible horror will live with them forever. The fact that his body was dismembered and mailed to different parts of Canada. And the fact that his head has not been found is just another part of this horror story. This evil person that did this, surely will never see the light of day again. And the police are investigating to see if he maybe involved in other crimes. I would say that he is. I'm sure he just didn't commit just one crime in such a barbaric manner. I believe he premeditated exactly what he was going to do and carried it out. He would have to have the material ready to mail the body parts and be organized, because that would be a big task in itself. Imagine, now he is afraid for his own safety. Well if he was cut up in little pieces, I'm sure there wouldn't be any sympathy for him. I do hope the people of Montreal are helping out with the family of this young man and I understand they have set up an account to get funds for them. My sympathy goes out to the family and we will pray they get through this nightmare. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I hope the company that hosted the video in Edmonton is charged to set an example for others. They were warned to take it down and refused to do so (although eventually did). There's no justification for advertising/showing a video of someone's murder. It is inhumane and damaging to many people include some people who might have viewed the video and will be haunted by it. Other sickies may even be inspired by it, as Magnotta once worshipped his role models, Homolka and Bernardo.

I am not aware that it is a fact that the owner of the site was ordered to take down the video and refused.  I believe the said owner would have been served with a court order to remove it the same day had that of been a fact.  If you read the links above he took it down of his own accord the articles say. JMO.  As we all know site owners are not aways aware of everything on their site.  I am sure over the years even on this site , the owner wasnt always aware of everything on here until brought to their attention just my though.  So I am not positive that we can blame the site owner for any knowledge. Magnotta would have been too young then. Mid 1990's was 17 years ago. That would make Magnotta 12 years old at the time.

Was this not the same after the deviant Williams started to confess his horrendous sins? There were, and likely still are, people who think he was responsible for every murder that happened within 50 miles of any postal code he inhabited. And now there are some that think he and Bernardo were in cahoots. There's no proof and little logic.

Hate to burst bubbles but this is my humble opinion.

The family of Chinese student Jun Lin, who was brutally murdered and dismembered in Montreal last month, says his death was a "destructive blow" that left them physically and psychologically spent.

In a public letter written in Chinese, the family describes how grief has left them at "a breaking point."

The family also expresses deep gratitude for the outpouring of support and assistance in the wake of Lin's killing.

The letter was posted on a Chinese-language website Sunday. Concordia University plans to release an English version of the letter today, a spokesperson said.

Lin, the family's "pride and joy," was a student at Concordia, where he had started a computer engineering program after obtaining permanent residency in Canada.

The university is handling donations to the Jun Lin Family Fund, set up last week by Concordia's Chinese Students Association.

Concordia has also offered to host a memorial service for Lin, but won't proceed without his family's blessing, said university media relations director Chris Mota.

The family is not considering any possible interviews with media at this point.

Lin's dismembered torso was found in a suitcase outside a Montreal apartment building last month. Police later recovered his hands and feet, which were mailed to the Conservative and Liberal party headquarters in Ottawa and to two schools in Vancouver in the days after his murder.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, was arrested in Germany last week after an international manhunt. He is awaiting extradition back to Canada to face first-degree murder charges.

The English version of the letter you can access through the link I posted above. I am normally not affected by things like this too greatly but the letter is heartbreaking.

From Maclean's magazine article:

"And yet part of what has made Magnotta an object of fascination in the past days lies in the way he reflects back at us, in uncomfortable ways, something about the culture of the moment: he is a social media monster. His carefully cultivated online identities, his many online selves, grew an Internet presence larger than his tiny existence: Magnotta, someone wrote on a Facebook page in his name, is “a Canadian male model who has become world famous through his photographs and television appearances.” In the way he has lived his online life, Magnotta has pushed to the outer limit the narcissism and self-absorption already inherent in the social media sites—the YouTubes and Facebooks and Twitters and Pinterests—that increasingly govern our lives."

Luka Magnotta: How not to disappear

‘Disappearance’ expert Frank M. Ahearn looks at the accused killer’s botched escape attempt

By Alan Parker | Maclean's – 21 hours

Amid all his other alleged crimes, Luka Rocco Magnotta is apparently a plagiarist.

An article entitled “Luka Magnotta: How to Completely Disappear and Never Be Found” was posted on the website Digital Journal on June 1, 2009, by one “Rocco Magnotta” with an accompanying photo of Luka Magnotta. But Magnotta is not the author of the original article. He found the anonymous text on the Internet and re-posted it on Digital Journal under his own name.

That’s the assessment of Frank M. Ahearn, a self-described privacy expert and author of The Digital Hit Man and How to Disappear. Ahearn, who divides his time between New York City and Paris, said the article has been floating around on the Internet in various forms for about five years.

“I actually had it on my website a few years ago (before Magnotta’s claimed authorship) as ‘Tips from Idiots,” Ahearn said in a telephone interview.

Ahearn called it Tips from Idiots because — quite apart from the plagiarism aspect — he says the article is full of bad advice for anyone who truly wants to disappear.

And Ahearn should know: In a two-decade career as a legendary skiptracer, Ahearn says he located more than 50,000 people who didn’t want to be found.

Then, after a chance encounter in 2003 with a corporate whistleblower who feared for his life, Ahearn turned the tables. He began a new career helping people hide — from skiptracers, from stalkers, from abusive ex-spouses, from enemies and from the general nosiness of a world in which so much information about us is now available online.

In the past decade Ahearn estimates he has helped about 85 people vanish, either physically or as an identifiable, reachable digital identity on the Internet.

The article Magnotta claimed to have authored was out of date and neglected to address some of the most critical aspects of engineering a successful disappearance in the 21st Century, Ahearn said. It was probably based on a 1986 book by Doug Richmond with a similar title — How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found.

(Around the same time, Richmond wrote Lonely Planet’s “Mexico: A Travel Survival Guide” and “Central America: How to get there and back in one piece with a minimum of hassle.” So it’s fairly obvious which direction Richmond felt the best getaway lay.)

Magnotta’s flight to Europe from Montreal on May 26 showed more impulse (if not panic) than planning, Ahearn said. “I don’t think he had much of an escape idea in his head,” Ahearn  said. “I think (if) he did the crime … (he) thought, ‘Oh shit, I better get out of Canada.’ I also don’t think he thought the crime would become a worldwide piece of news and Interpol would become involved as well.”

When he was arrested in a Berlin Internet cafe on June 4, Magnotta  had three sets of identification in his possession and was trying to print a new false identity card. Apart from documentation in his own name, Ahearn surmises the fugitive’s other two false identities would not stand up to any kind of serious scrutiny — which is why Magnotta used his own passport for his Air Transat flight from Montreal to Paris.

The other identity documents may have been forged or stolen, Ahearn said, but were probably bought online from one of the many companies that specialize in producing “camouflage” passports and other documents that appear legitimate but are sold as “novelty” items, thus staying — barely — inside the law.

The false passport said to bear the name Kirk Trammel was probably one of those, since it would be almost impossible for Magnotta to choose the name appearing on any real passport that could have been fraudulently issued to him. (And choose he did, since “Trammel” is likely an homage to Sharon Stone’s icepick murderer in the movie Basic Instinct.)

Camouflage passports appear similar to real passports but are issued in the name of countries which no longer exist like Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and British Honduras (now Belize). Because the “countries” are no longer legal entities, the “passports” are not illegal in most parts of the world (the U.S. excluded) — as long as they are not actually used as a form of identification.

But in the years immediately after 9/11, American business travellers in dangerous parts of the world were actually encouraged to carry camouflage passports so they were less obvious targets for al Qaida. And reporters on foreign assignment have been known to carry camouflage passports for use at hotel check-ins — just so their real passports are always with them in case of emergency or rapid departure.

“It’s illegal but plenty of people do it,” Ahearn said.

Some countries with major offshore banking industries will issue “banking” passports in the name of clients who have significant accounts and pay a stiff fee — but it is again highly unlikely that a scuffler like Luka Magnotta would have access to the kind of money necessary to acquire a banking passport.

And money is generally the key to a successful disappearance. The greater access one has to hard cash, the better one’s chances of staying undercover. Magnotta had relatively little money with him during his flight or access to more, apart from selling sexual favours.

The greatest danger Magnotta posed on the run — supposing, of course, that he actually is a psychotic murderer as alleged — was the possibility he would target and kill someone in Europe for financial gain to keep running.

In the end, Magnotta’s inability to break his addiction to using cell phones and the Internet was probably his greatest failure as a fugitive. “Don’t use any computer that can ever be traced to you,” Ahearn said. The footprint is just too big and the trail of evidence left behind is too strong.

Ahearn might have added, “Don’t post dozens of photographs of yourself on the Internet.”

Not if you really and truly want to disappear.

Perhaps we will learn at Magnotta’s trial whether his botched escape attempt was an incompetent failure or just part of a megalomaniacal poseur’s elaborate dance on the international stage before the curtain ultimately falls.

The Montreal teacher has been fired for showing the murder video; which is justified but also shows the fallout from Magnotta's terrorism of the country is extensive and many different people are affected unexpectedly.

I think Canada was hit unawares by such a brutal and sensational murder. We would expect such a thing to happen in the US before here. The Scarborough three (Bernardo, Williams and Magnotta) have collectively wreaked a great deal of damage to this country.

What a MAD imagination full of bizarre tales. Who will ever get to the bottom of his real thoughts if he has any. I doubt I will even watch the trials b/c I can imagine they will be bizarre and maddening.
Now according to info gathered, he has actually written about and made the video a week before the murder of Lin? Lin's family will be having to face this sick mockery in their most delicate of mental states. How many psychiatrists will it take to talk to and define all his personas? Perhaps now there may be new laws passed since this has taken on not only political but also international relations ramifications ...

Magnotta requests trial by judge and jury
Suspect in Jun Lin killing doesn't ask for psychiatric evaluation

Magnotta appeared in person at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday, with only seven journalists allowed inside the room for his brief hearing.

The accused has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and four other charges in Lin's grisly killing. The 33-year-old permanent Canadian resident died May 24 or 25.

Magnotta is accused of mailing Lin's body parts to different places including the Ottawa offices of the Conservative Party of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada and two Vancouver schools. He is also accused of posting a video of the events on the internet.

Luc Leclair, a prominent Toronto lawyer, has joined Magnotta's defence team, and requested his client be transferred from detention to attend the Thursday hearing.

Wearing a short-sleeved plaid shirt and blue jeans, Magnotta, 29, stood inside the glass-panelled prisoner's box flanked by two guards as his lawyers spoke to the judge.

His lawyers requested a trial by judge and jury, while the prosecution asked for a publication ban on details of Magnotta's prescription medication.

Leclair told the judge he's concerned about Magnotta physical and mental well-being, and that his client needs access to his medication.

The charges he faces also include defiling Lin's corpse, harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and members of Parliament, and publishing and mailing obscene material.

The defence didn't ask for a psychological assessment, which would have evaluated whether Magnotta is apt to be tried.

Magnotta's original defence lawyer, Pierre Panaccio, said earlier this week he'd consider the option of a psychiatric evaluation request.

Magnotta 'trusts' Canadian legal system
After the court appearance, Leclair spoke to reporters outside the Montreal courthouse.

He thanked Berlin authorities for taking "exemplary care" of his client, and explained Magnotta waived his rights to contest extradition "because he wanted to come back to Montreal."

"He trusts the Canadian judicial system," Leclair said.

Magnotta's 10-day preliminary hearing, scheduled for March 2013, will be preceded by a pre-trial hearing in January.

A representative for the Crown prosecution office said a March 2013 preliminary hearing is relatively soon, given courthouse constraints and judge availability.

The Crown and defence previously agreed to set a date for his preliminary hearing, in order to avoid another court event.

Victim's family travelled to Montreal
Magnotta was extradited from Germany to Montreal aboard a Canadian Forces aircraft on June 18, surrounded by heavy security detail that included local police investigators, RCMP officers and Canadian Border Services authorities.

His extradition came two weeks after his June 4 arrest in Berlin at a cybercafé, where an employee recognized him from Interpol-issued photos.

The international police agency orchestrated a global manhunt for Magnotta after Montreal police issued a warrant for his arrest.

Chinese national Jun Lin was a student at Concordia University. (CBC)
Magnotta is currently being held at a detention centre in Rivières-des-Prairies, a borough on the eastern edge of the island of Montreal.

Jun Lin's torso was found in a suitcase outside an apartment in Montreal on May 29, the same day his hand and foot were mailed to the Ottawa offices of the federal Conservative and Liberal parties.

His other hand and foot were discovered by staff opening packages at two schools in Vancouver several days later.

Lin's family has travelled to Montreal from China to retrieve his remains. Lin's head has yet to be found nearly a month after his death.

The victim's family have kept a low profile since their arrival in Canada, and have expressed to police their great hope of retrieving Lin's missing head.

In an open letter published earlier this month, they called their adult son the family's "pride and joy."

Not guilty plea, election to be tried by judge and jury, and prominent legal minds joining his team...methinks there are going to be some surprises here.

Prosecution has asked for a ban on the details of the type of meds Magnotta takes. We know from his internet posts that he is bi-polar. I wonder if he's schizophrenic as well?

Can't go tainting potential jurors right from the outset. I happen to agree with the publication bans that we've been seeing more of. We do not have a need to know what meds he was on or off.

Stupid pills. That's my guess.

He looks vacant (dead eyes)....no feelings, except for any bit of attention he can get on himself.  Now he will have a Jury to sit and listen and maybe even have to watch the videos.  Disturbing/affecting more people and getting the attention he craves.  In his mind he is finally noticed; but as we all know, for the wrong reasons....Sick puppy all right, no pill will fix that, in my opinion.
He'll sit through it all with the same expression....dead inside and outside.

Just guessing, but here goes.... I think that he will claim that Lin made a pact with him, and Lin took a poison and that  Magnotta carried through with Lin`s death wish, along with placing  it on the internet, chopped him up, sent the body parts to places, upon Lin's request etc etc.
This sicko will blame the victim! He will claim it was done at the request of Lin, including placing it on the internet.
And that is why he has claimed NOT GUILTY!!

How is that for a possible defence? This sicko - (sicko) being so compassionate towards Lin and following Lin#s request. (sicko) followed through on the deceased request!!

I'm glad to see the police were taking the animal cruelty/murder tips seriously, but makes it all the more frustrating that they were not successful in finding Magnotta in time and possibly even preventing Lin's murder.

Montreal police investigators are awaiting tests to confirm whether they have found the final missing remains of Lin Jun, the Chinese university student who was dismembered in a shocking homicide a month ago.

Acting on information from an unidentified source, police officers seized what reportedly appeared to be a human head from a pond in a park in the west-end neighbourhood of Angrignon.

Montreal police have been questioning Luka Magnotta, who is charged with murder in the case, hoping he might reveal the location of Mr. Lin's head. Police had said he was not co-operating.

Montreal police were approaching the apparent find with caution. Shortly after the killing, they fell for a hoax involving a fake foot.

"We have to wait for analysis over the next days, the next week, to confirm whether it is a body part and whether it's related to ... the Magnotta case," said police spokeswoman Constable Annie Lemieux.

Angrignon Park is on the western terminus of the Montreal subway system's green line, which runs through a neighbourhood where both Mr. Magnotta and Mr. Lin once lived.

Mr. Lin's torso was found in a trash pile shortly after he was killed and dismembered in a crime that was allegedly recorded on video. His hands and feet were mailed to two political parties in Ottawa and to two schools in Vancouver.

The case captured global attention as Mr. Magnotta fled to France and then Germany, leading police on a very public chase. He was turned in by an attendant at an internet cafe and he was quickly returned to Montreal.

A 29-year-old native of the Toronto area, Mr. Magnotta is in custody while he awaits a preliminary hearing in March on a charge of first-degree murder among other charges.

Mr. Lin's family from China was in Montreal for a memorial service last week. They were awaiting a death certificate and hoping to receive the rest of Mr. Lin's remains before returning to China.

Why Magnotta’s lawyers didn’t request a psychiatrist assessment

Q & A: What happens in a psychiatric assessment

TORONTO – He’s pleaded not guilty to macabre crimes that have garnered worldwide attention and in a surprise move Thursday, Luka Rocco Magnotta’s lawyer ultimately decided against requesting a psychiatric evaluation of their client.

This left some experts Global News interviewed with one obvious question: what will Magnotta's legal counsel argue in his defence? But experts in the forensic psychiatry and psychology fields say there may be many reasons behind why Magnotta backed away from a mental health assessment.

And they all centre on traits of Magnotta’s characteristics that experts say point to conditions, such as extreme narcissism, delusion and histrionic personality.

“If he’s very narcissistic, he doesn’t want to be thought of as being crazy. He doesn’t want to pursue that route,” Dr. David Nussbaum speculates.

Nussbaum is a University of Toronto psychology professor and research psychologist. He has decades of experience as a forensic psychologist.

“There’s a stigma attached to being mentally ill, whether there should be or shouldn’t be. People who are narcissistic don’t want to be thought of in any negative way. He may rather be found guilty than to go to an insanity plea and face that kind of damage to the persona he’s created,” he says.

The experts Global News spoke with for this story have not met or evaluated Magnotta, but their opinions are based on what they’ve seen so far from web pages, auditions, and other online footprints.

A forensic psychiatric assessment would dig deep into Magnotta’s life in an attempt to piece together who he is and determine what led him to do what he allegedly did, says Dr. Oren Amitay, a registered clinical psychologist and Ryerson University lecturer who conducts psychological evaluations.

Most importantly, the assessment would decipher whether Magnotta is fit to stand trial and whether he could be found to be criminally responsible for the crimes he’s accused of committing.

“This type of assessment is very in-depth and seeks to determine culpability – specifically whether the individual’s actions were caused by a mental illness,” such as being in a psychotic state, says Dr. Michael Seto, a psychiatrist at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. Seto would not comment on Magnotta’s case.

Psychiatrists typically spend about a month with the person they’re interviewing in a mental health facility. It’s an intrusive process – they gather collateral information by interviewing family members, old teachers, classmates and friends, coworkers and anyone who may shed light on the person in question, Nussbaum says.

Personality tests are also conducted, and Magnotta would be interviewed for days or even weeks, as psychiatrists pick at his brain with open-ended questions, retracing his childhood and personal relationships along with cognitive tests.

Amitay says that based on what he has seen of Magnotta’s prolific online footprint, spanning from photos, reality TV show auditions and multiple Facebook pages, he is narcissistic and would love an opportunity to continue to portray his constructed persona.

“He gets to talk about himself and brag about accomplishments and deeds without looking like he’s bragging,” Amitay said.

“People with this personality style believe they can portray themselves the way they want. They are so arrogant that they believe they can be manipulative and deceive the tester,” Amitay says, noting that in these interviews, psychiatrists rely on this sole source’s self reporting.

If psychiatrists asked Magnotta to talk about his romantic relationships, he could say he had hundreds of lovers and if they asked about his education, he could say he was a rebel, Amitay says.

“It all depends on the character that you want to portray and maintain.”
Nussbaum says that in forensic psychiatry, comments need to be supported by corroborative evidence. If Magnotta says he has a lengthy criminal record, for example, psychiatrists verify this detail with police records.

“These people aren’t there because they want to be there. They have to do and they want to portray themselves in the best light. You can’t believe what people say . . . corroborative evidence is absolutely critical in forensic work,” Nussbaum says.

Nussbaum says minute family details may even be exposed through these assessments – medical history and traces of mental disorders in the family, depression or even suicide could surface.

Both Nussbaum and Amitay concede that what they’ve seen in Magnotta would be consistent with elements of psychopathy, a condition largely hinged on control.

And while Magnotta can deny any anecdotes psychiatrists may come across while gathering collateral info, he may be uncomfortable in the situation.

“I don’t know if he’d feel intimidated by that lack of control – who are they going to speak to, who knows what skeletons he has hiding in his closets. Maybe he’s afraid that something’s going to come up that’s really going to embarrass him,” Amitay says.

In short, he may be more interested in protecting this identity he’d built than to be viewed by world as being mentally ill, Nussbaum.

“I’ve had patients . . . who have said if I have to do time, I’ll do time but I’m not crazy,” he said.

In Canada, meeting the criteria to be found not criminally responsible can be difficult, seasoned lawyers have said.

Under the Criminal Code, a person deemed not criminally responsible is “suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act or omission or of knowing that that it was wrong.”

Amitay says schizophrenia, manic episodes and dissociative disorder – when a person experiences an out of body experience – are the most common conditions that lead the courts in determining that a suspect is not criminally responsible for their acts. Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders occur when a person has lost touch with reality, Amitay notes. In some instances, psychotic states are induced by drugs, such as LSD or PCP.

Alberta’s Vince Li, who beheaded a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in 2008, was found not criminally responsible because he was suffering from schizophrenia and a psychotic episode when the grisly incident occurred.

Amitay suggests Magnotta comes off as narcissistic, with histrionic personality and is “colloquially” delusional, but that won’t suffice for being not criminally responsible for his supposed crimes.

“Nothing suggests he’s mentally unstable to the point where he wouldn’t know the difference between right and wrong,” he says.

In the meantime, Magnotta will fade into the background as his court dates are set for 2013. He will face a preliminary hearing next March where part of the evidence against him will be heard.

Magnotta, charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Chinese student Lin Jun, 33, has opted for a trial in front of a jury.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/jun-lins-slaying-shatters-mothers-view-canada-212353696.html

The grieving mother of Chinese university student Jun Lin says her son viewed Canada as a place that was welcoming and safe for immigrants, but his brutal killing and dismemberment have left her with a starkly different view of the country.
"We still believe that most people here are very kind, but this heinous crime happened in Canada. It's made me reconsider what kind of place this is," Jun Lin's mother, Zhigui Du, told the CBC's Mark Kelley.
Lin's parents have been treated with "kindness" by the federal government, she said, and people here have shown the couple sympathy and support since they arrived in Montreal following their son's grisly slaying in late May.
But his death, the brutal nature of which garnered headlines around the world, has shattered the idealistic view of Canada that Du's 33-year-old son had impressed on her.
Before moving to Montreal from Beijing to study in a computer engineering program at Concordia University, Lin had done extensive research online about Canada.
His mother said he came away with the impression that it was "a peaceful place with great respect for multiculturalism," and that there was no reason to worry about his safety.
Luka Rocco Magnotta, a small-time adult-film actor originally from the Toronto area who had cultivated a strange assortment of personae online, has pleaded not guilty in the case. He has been charged with five criminal offences including first-degree murder, harassing politicians and posting obscene material to the web.
Today, she says, when she walks down the street sometimes she feels like "everyone looks like Magnotta. I live with so much fear."
Magnotta, 29, was arrested in Berlin on June 4 following an international manhunt, and was extradited to Canada on board a military aircraft two weeks later. He made a brief court appearance in Montreal on June 21 where he requested a trial by judge and jury.
Lin's parents flew to Montreal last month to collect their son's remains and mourn his death, holding a private memorial service that drew between 50 and 100 friends and family.
In an emotional two-hour-long interview, the couple spoke of their struggle to come to terms with Jun Lin's killing and their anxiety over the court case, which is still months away. Pretrial motions will begin in March 2013.
Asked whether the Canadian legal system will be able to deliver justice in his son's death, Jun Lin's father, Diran Lin, said, replied, "I hope so ... I can only wish for it."
Jun Lin was born in the city of Wuhan, in central China. His mother said the family lived in a remote area, "poor with material things, but we were a happy family."
To get around, the three of them would pile on a single bicycle, Jun Lin on the front, Du on the back, his father in the middle pedalling them along "bumpy village roads."
Going to Canada was Lin's dream, his mother said, but after arriving in Montreal he stayed in touch with his family almost every day.
They lost contact with him on the evening of May 24, and his mother then got a phone call from one of her son's classmates in Montreal saying that his friends also had not heard from him.
"When I heard that, my heart almost stopped beating," Du said. "I couldn't breathe."
She eventually learned of Jun Lin's death from a TV news report, and said she fainted.
Jun Lin's death has put a strain on the couple, and the suggestion that his slaying has allegedly been posted online has only heightened their anguish.
"What a disaster and huge pain for our family," Du said, sobbing.
"The most unbearable pain for me is that the video got posted on the internet. People watched it over and over. It's like my son is being murdered again and again."
Diran Lin said he doesn't believe his son had a relationship with Magnotta, although his apartment was the site of Jun Lin's murder.
"I'm confident to assure you on that," he said, adding that testimony at trial may clarify whether the two men knew one another.
While they wait for the trial to begin, Jun Lin's parents are also trying to decide where to lay their son's remains to rest.
They had planned to have the burial in Montreal because, his mother said, he loved it so much there.
But the couple is facing mounting pressure from family to lay his remains to rest in the country where he was born and raised.
"We Chinese have an old saying: 'Fallen leaves must go back to the root of the tree,'" Du said. "We're caught in the middle and really don't know what to do."

MONTREAL - A public memorial will be held this morning for slain Montreal student Jun Lin.

The 33-year-old Chinese national was killed and dismembered two months ago in a gruesome case that shocked people around the world.

Lin's parents are expected to attend the ceremony at a Montreal church.

Luka Rocco Magnotta has pleaded not guilty to several charges in connection with Lin's death — including a count of first-degree murder.

Lin was studying computer science at Concordia University.

The university says it has raised more than $70,000 in Lin's name to support his family and Chinese students at the school.

Luka Rocco Magnotta case back in court ahead of March preliminary hearing

By The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – 7 hours

MONTREAL - The court case of Luka Rocco Magnotta, who is charged in the slaying and dismemberment of a Chinese engineering student, resumes today.

Crown and defence lawyers will be in a Montreal courtroom this afternoon to iron out the details of Magnotta's preliminary hearing, which is scheduled to begin March 11.

Magnotta faces several charges, including first-degree murder in the slaying of Concordia University student Jun Lin last May.

The other charges are: committing an indignity to a body; publishing obscene material; criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament; and mailing obscene and indecent material.

The 30-year-old Ontario native has pleaded not guilty and has chosen trial by judge and jury.

Magnotta surprised many by appearing in person in a courtroom last June but it's not clear if he'll be present today.

His previous appearances have created a circus-like atmosphere at the Montreal courthouse.

Magnotta became the subject of an international manhunt after parts of Lin's body began turning up across the country.

He is accused of mailing body parts to different places including the Ottawa offices of the Conservative Party of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada and two Vancouver schools.

Luka Magnotta, accused in infamous body-parts case, set for preliminary inquiry
By The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – 7 hours ago

MONTREAL - A preliminary hearing is set to start today for Luka Rocco Magnotta, the man charged in connection with the infamous body-parts case that made international headlines.

Magnotta's lawyers want the public and media barred from attending the hearing, which is to determine if there is enough evidence for a trial.

The request for the closed courtroom stems from an unspecified reason related to Magnotta's personal and medical history.

His legal team hopes the only people allowed in the Montreal courtroom to hear the details will be the prosecutors, the judge and a court clerk.

Magnotta is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Chinese-born student Jun Lin last May, he has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Authorities named Magnotta as a suspect after the severed remains of Lin, a Montreal engineering student, were mailed to the Ottawa offices of the federal Conservatives and the federal Liberals along with two Vancouver schools.

More remains were found at a Montreal park.

Father of Magnotta's alleged victim breaks down in tears
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The preliminary hearing of Luka Rocco Magnotta took an emotional turn today as Diran Lin, the father of the alleged victim, broke down in court and left in tears during witness testimony.

The content of that testimony is under publication ban.

Magnotta is accused of murdering Concordia University student Jun Lin last year.

On Tuesday morning a Quebec court judge ruled against the defence's request to have the hearings held in camera, which would have effectively only allowed prosecutors, the judge and a court clerk to attend.

Magnotta's legal team, led by Toronto lawyer Luc Leclair, had argued barring the public from the courtroom was necessary to guarantee their client a fair trial.

But media lawyer Mark Bantey argued there's already a publication ban in effect on the preliminary hearing and the request to ban reporters and the public is highly unusual.

Magnotta has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the slaying of Jun Lin last May.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether there is enough evidence to send him to trial.

Those at the courthouse yesterday included the victim's father, who travelled from China, and was accompanied by an interpreter. A lawyer representing Lin's parents said they support the media's fight to keep the hearing open.

Four weeks have been set aside for the hearing.

Jun Lin's parents are going through what no parent should ever have to deal with, it is heartbreaking.  I see they are supporting the media's fight to keep the hearing open.  I wonder if they feel a little wary of Canadian justice and want to make sure this horrible crime stays in the public interest so, in their eyes it would ensure that there will be justice served.  They do live in China, afterall, and maybe they aren't quite sure about Canada especially since their loved son was murdered so brutally.

jellybean, hope your wrist is healing okay, not fun, I'm sure.

Magnotta is charged with first-degree murder in the death and dismemberment of Concordia University student Jun Lin. (Montreal police)
Magnotta research interview should be protected, profs say

A document released late last night shows Luka Magnotta was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia as a teenager.

Magnotta is charged with first-degree murder in the death and dismemberment of Concordia University student Jun Lin.

A Toronto judge approved the release of the document concerning Magnotta's medical history.

The letter was submitted as evidence when Magnotta was facing fraud charges in 2005.

At the time, he was going by his birth name — Eric Clinton Newman.

The letter was from a Toronto-area psychiatrist who had been treating him for five years.

The psychiatrist said he knew of two recent occasions when Newman was admitted to hospital as an inpatient.

Media fought to make document public

The letter was released after several media outlets fought for it to be made public.

A Globe and Mail reporter had been trying to obtain the letter, a public document, since July, but was rebuffed in several attempts.

Various media outlets then joined together to hire counsel to make arguments to a judge for the letter's release.

Magnotta's lawyer Luc Leclair tried to stop the letter from becoming public, but Ontario Court Judge Fergus O'Donnell ruled Tuesday afternoon that it should be released.

In his ruling, O'Donnell said the document does contain sensitive and personal medical information, but any privacy interest was forgone when the letter was filed in open court.

"Without access to the letter, the public is not in a position to engage in a meaningful assessment or debate over the appropriateness of what happened to Mr. Newman in 2005 in what is supposed to be an open and transparent court process," O'Donnell wrote.

Luka Magnotta to stand trial on 1st-degree murder

CBC – 2 hours 36 minutes ago

A Court of Quebec judge has ordered Luka Magnotta to stand trial for first-degree murder in the death of Concordia University student Jun Lin in May 2012.

Magnotta. 30, will also be tried on four other charges, including causing indignity to Lin's body, broadcasting obscene material, using the postal service to send obscene material and harassment of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament.

A trial date will be set on April 29. Crown prosecutor Louis Bouthillier said a trial date is not likely before 2014.

"We were obviously very satisfied with the court's decision this afternoon," Bouthillier said outside the court. "I wish to salute the hard work done by the police officers in this case.

"They worked very hard, and there is still a lot of work to be done."

Magnotta, who was born in Ontario, pleaded not guilty and opted for trial before a judge and jury.

The weeks-long preliminary inquiry in the case wrapped up earlier today at the Montreal courthouse. Evidence presented at that hearing cannot be published because of a court-ordered ban.

Judge Lori Renée Weitzman, who heard from more than 30 witnesses in recent weeks, has ruled there is enough evidence to proceed to trial in the case.

Earlier this week, Magnotta's lawyer told the court that if his client is ordered to stand trial, it should be on a lesser charge.

Luc Leclerc, who is representing Magnotta, told the judge that the Crown must show that the killing was both planned and deliberate for a charge of first-degree.

He said based on his analysis, the judge cannot conclude the evidence presented at the hearing justifies that charge.

Magnotta stands accused in the killing and dismemberment of Lin, a Chinese national. He was arrested on June 4, 2012, in an internet cafe in Berlin, Germany, after an international manhunt.

In many of the family pics on the link you posted, SAP...they (the Lin family) are giving the peace sign.  How very sad this young peaceful man ever met up with Magnotta.  How very sad.

In one article the mom said she has lost her will to live. :'(  The family is so gracious despite the horrific crime against their son. So tragic. We  need the DP back.

I don't understand why mailing body parts is called mailing "obscene material" as if it's dirty magazines or something. The law needs to be updated to accurately reflect the painful reality of the times. And no I'm not calling for the "DP" just a law against mailing body parts!

Magnotta, Only In Canada!! How sick. Who spawned this person in the first place? How can a Canadian man become so twisted and sick. What is his background?  No one seems to know.

Was he tortured and abused as a child? Was he perplexed about his sexual orientation?
We know nothing about his background. Really, all that we know is that his deeds are twisted and sick.

We can yak all we want about the terrible things that he has done --- but for forensic psychological purposes the answer is WHY?
It may come out in the trial - which may prove to be interesting....

If he is a "Made  in Canada" brand, how many more Canadian  Magnotta's are out there?

That can be the scary part -------

As per my post #194....apparantly Magnotta was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia about 5 years ago.  I think I read in another article somewhere else, that he didn't take his meds though.
In my opinion, he would have to be mentally sick to do what he did....no one in their right mind would/could do what he did.

CTV had a show on Luca Magnotta on Friday night....not sure if you can see it on-line.
On the show it said there was an on-line group formed with about 4000 members that searched for 18 months to find the perpetrator in the videos of harming kittens.  They were one step behind Magnotta and did track him to Montreal.  They worked closely with the SPCA and tried to work with the Montreal Police....who were not exactly pulling out the stops to find him.  In fact we know they were too late, the hunt was not on until Jun Lin was found murdered.

This group was amateur sleuthers.  They were amazed to see how many profiles and websites Luca had set up.  It took a heck of a lot of work to put two and two together.  He was one busy guy on the computer.   The group traced Magnotta to Montreal due to the unique streetlights in some of his pictures.  Also, they mentioned that many of his on-line pictures were photo-shopped, his head on another man's body....so they really worked hard to get the truth.  They admit they were one step behind....but I give them lots of credit for all their hard work, they certainly tried to stop this monster.
In the show they also interviewed his ex-girlfriend....I believe she is a transvestite....she really didn't add too much to the show except to say Luca just wanted to be famous.
Well, now he will be locked away forever I hope.

I watched that program too. Those guys were doing a really good job of staying on top of this little psycho. Note some of their main tools, google street view just like we have been using at times on here. Walking man took them for strolls and allowed them to see from most any angle. There is power in combining skills and eyes over the net. Its just too bad they couldn't have gotten that one jump ahead before jun-lin met his fate.

What kind of evidence would they need from Europe to convict him of a murder that took place in Canada?

Dr. John Bradford won’t work Magnotta case because of PTSD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Forensic psychiatrist Dr. John Bradford initially agreed to work on the high-profile Magnotta case but has since changed his mind due to PTSD.

One of this country’s top forensic psychiatrists says he will not work on the upcoming trial of alleged killer Luka Rocco Magnotta because he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, a condition triggered by a career spent absorbing graphic video evidence.

Dr. John Bradford said he never used to believe PTSD was real, but having experienced it, he now recognizes that it is a true medical condition.

“I’m not a skeptic anymore,” he said. “I can tell you it’s real.”

In his career, Bradford analyzed some of Canada’s most notorious murderers, including Paul Bernardo, Karla Homolka and Robert Pickton.

But he says it was the case of convicted killer ex-colonel Russell Williams that triggered his breakdown.

“It’s like a switch went off in my head and I just broke down,” Bradford said. “I get tears occasionally, but this was sobbing, out of control.”

‘It was just eating me up’

Bradford had spent days interviewing Williams, the former Canadian Air Force colonel who pleaded guilty in 2010 to 88 charges, including two murders, two sexual assaults and dozens of break-ins or attempted break-ins into women's homes.

“He wasn't a psychopathic individual who suddenly at 45, 48 years of age started to kill women,” Bradford said of Williams. “Something happened in his life, which has never been in the public domain, I’m not at liberty to talk about it, and that made a change.”

Bradford said it was the videos of Williams raping and murdering his victims that gnawed at him.

“You are looking at these videos as they are unfolding. You are hearing what the person is saying, you are seeing the interaction and you know what the end result is,” he said. “It was just eating me up.”

Considering himself a “tough guy,” Bradford said he tried to work through his distress. It didn’t work. He started drinking, became irritable and even considered suicide.

With medication and therapy, Bradford says he is now feeling better. But after initially agreeing to work on the Magnotta case, he has since changed his mind.

Magnotta will stand trial in September for the 2012 death of Concordia University student Jun Lin. The case involves murder and dismemberment, all of it apparently videotaped.

“I’m getting old now,” Bradford said to explain his decision not to consult on the Magnotta case.
"I don't need to do this stuff anymore.  I think for now I will probably avoid it".

My fears as well Fridgiebear. Especially with his diagnosis. So many people with that affliction ... when they are feeling better have the delusional thinking they are better and don't need to spend more money on their medications they should always be on. It's a scary thought that he may one day soon be out like the Greyhound butcher.

The challenges of Magnotta's not criminally responsible defence
Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Concordia University student, was a Chinese national living in Montreal to attend school at the time of his death in May 2012.

Lin Feng, 35, was called by the Crown to testify today, interrupting the cross-examination of a police witness, because he is scheduled to return to China tomorrow. Lin Feng described himself to the court as Jun Lin's lover. They met in Beijing in 2009 and later became a couple in Shanghai.

Lin Feng said he lived with the victim in Montreal, but was in China at the time Jun Lin died. They texted daily, he told the court.

He is addressing the court with the aid of a Mandarin translator.

Magnotta has pleaded not guilty to five offences, but has agreed to the facts of the case, including that he killed Lin.

Because of that admission, the Crown does not need to prove the facts of the case, but does need to convince the jury that Magnotta had the state of mind to commit the crimes.

His lawyer has told the jury he intends to argue that his client should be found not criminally responsible for the death because he suffers from a mental illness. The prosecutor in the case said he intends to prove the killing was premeditated.

The three previous witnesses called to testify by the Crown have all been members of the Montreal police’s forensic team.

In total, more than 60 witnesses are expected to testify during the six-week-long trial.

He has been able to skate on the "mental issue" card at least since 2005. His own lawyer stated that changed everything and it does seem to have worked in his favor all along. Scary thought now.

Luka Magnotta guilty of 1st-degree murder in Jun Lin's slaying

A jury in Montreal has found Luka Magnotta guilty of first-degree murder and committing an indignity to a body in the killing and dismemberment of Chinese engineering student Jun Lin in 2012.

The 12 jurors returned the verdict Tuesday, on their eighth day of deliberations.
Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer thanked the members of the jury for their patience and hard work.

"Sir Winston Churchill would be proud," Cournoyer told the eight women and four men of the jury before they were dismissed.

Aside from the possibility of finding Magnotta not criminally responsible, jurors had been given several choices for a verdict:

First-degree murder, if they found the act was planned and deliberate.
Second-degree murder, if they believed intent was there without planning.
Manslaughter.
Crown prosecutor Louis Bouthillier was happy with the verdict.

“We had faith that the proof presented during the trial would be successful in convincing the jury,” he said outside the courtroom.

Bouthillier said he was expecting a lengthy deliberation, adding that the jury members had a lot of evidence and testimony to consider.

He said the jury did an outstanding job.

"Individually, the 12 jurors, they were really magnificent," he said.

The verdict marks the end of a lengthy and unusual trial that focused primarily on Magnotta’s psychiatric state at the time of the killing.

Magnotta, 32, a former Ontario resident, pleaded not guilty to the five charges, arguing he suffers from a mental illness, but he admitted to the physical acts of killing and dismembering Lin, and sending his body parts with menacing notes to political parties and schools.

Lin, 33, a Chinese national, was studying at Montreal’s Concordia University when he met Magnotta. According to what the accused told psychiatrists hired by the defence to assess him, Lin responded to an ad Magnotta posted on Craigslist, looking for kinky sex.

Bouthillier said Magnotta's defence was a difficult argument to mount, particularly because Magnotta didn't testify and his lawyer bore the burden of proving his client was not criminally responsible through the testimony of experts.

Thanks for the update Kazoo.

I was beginning to wonder what would happen, as the jury had been out for some time. Glad that he was found guilty of first degree murder. My concern was that he would be found not criminally responsible.
