Title: Mike GREFNER - 34 - Missing - January 17, 2012 - Whistler - BC
Post by: devlee on January 23, 2012, 12:17:43 PM
From the Edmonton Sun (Jan. 22/12)

Family and friends of missing Whistler DJ Mike Grefner are growing more concerned with each passing hour.

Grefner, a Red Deer transplant and popular DJ in the mountain community, was last seen around 1 a.m. Tuesday at a nightclub in Whistler.

When the 34-year-old failed to show up for work the next day at Whistler’s Maxx Fish nightclub, it alarmed friends who immediately reported him missing.

“We figured out that no one had seen him since Tuesday night,” said Katherine Grefner, his elder sister. “It’s very out of character for him, and we all knew something was wrong.”

Whistler RCMP launched a search for Grefner, several groups of friends organized their own search parties within the community and posters had already been circulated in Edmonton and Red Deer by Friday.

“He’s really well loved and he’s got a lot of friends across B.C and Alberta,” said Katherine, adding it’s possible Grefner is now in either city, both places he’s familiar with. “That’s why it’s so odd that not one of them knows where he is.”

On Friday, RCMP received a tip from a waitress in Pemberton, B.C who swears she served Grefner lunch the day after he disappeared.

“Police are checking this lead in Pemberton, and the waitress says he was with a girl,” said Katherine. “We don’t know how this mystery girl could be or even if it was really Mike.”

The family is trying to remain positive, said Katherine.

“Lots of tears have been shed, and there’s that fear of the unknown, and worse, the possibility of never knowing,” she said. “But we’re focusing on spreading the message that Mike is missing and we want him back.”

Described as white, standing six-foot-two with a slim build, Grefner has brown hair, green eyes was clean shaven and has a slightly olive complexion.

He was last seen wearing faded jeans with crosses stitched on the back pockets, a navy blue t-shirt and a block, military style hat.

Anyone with information is asked to call Whistler RCMP at 1-604-932-3044 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

RCMP search for clues in Mike Grefner's disappearance
Global News Thursday, January 26, 2012 12:48 PM

Whistler resident Michael Grefner has not been seen since January 17th, and RCMP is hoping the public can help by providing information about a woman that may have had coffee with Grefner in Pemberton on January 19th.

RCMP said they have no more information identifying this woman.

They are also asking for help in indentifying the owner or driver of a white Jeep, possibly a YJ, that was seen idling between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. on January 19th, about a block from where Grefner was living.

Police said they are not certain the Jeep is connected to Grefner, but they are hoping the driver may have seen something and can help them.

"Investigators have said that the updates and information provided by friends via the Facebook site have been very instrumental in assisting investigators with this case, certainly with respect to putting a time-line together on Michael's activities leading up to his disappearance," said Sgt. Shawn M. LeMay with the Whistler RCMP.

To date, Whistler RCMP said they have received about 15 Tips, all of which have been followed-up on by investigators.

Police said they have searched around Grefner's home and along the nearby trails with an avalanche trained search (CARDA) dog, but have not been able to find any indication of where Grefner might be.

On January 25th, about 20 of Grefner's friends and concerned citizens searched a number of sites along the train tracks in Whistler, but the search did not yield any results.

Grefner was last seen in the early morning hours of January 17th at a nightclub in Whistler. He was reported missing shortly after midnight on the 19th.

Grefner is described as Caucasian, 34 years old, 6ft 2" tall, with a slim build. He has short curly brown hair, green eyes, an olive complexion, and is clean shaven.

If anyone has seen Michael Grefner since January 16th, or had contact with him in the days leading up to his disappearance, please call Whistler RCMP at (604) 932-3044.

Seems like Mike was calling/texting all kinds of girls that night.  Why?   We are not privvy to the phone call information, but if he was inebriated, then he might have been a bit of a 'pest' calling all these girls in the middle of the night.  I see he talked to Amy for 20 minutes at 2 a.m.....but she didn't answer at 4 a.m.   Why?  Thought he was being bothersome?

Sounds to me like he needed a friend that night.

How did he pay for the Cab if he had already lost his wallet?   Did the Cabbie just leave him at Garfinkles?  The Cabbie didn't want money?  Hmmm.    The Cops should have all kinds of knowledge from the Cell phone records....I suppose that is why they ended up in Pemberton.

update from the TIMELINE info: Pemberton sighting is NOT confirmed with degree of certainty…. “Officers are also continuing to look into a reported sighting of Grefner with a woman at a Pemberton café the morning he went missing. RCMP are trying to locate the woman he was reportedly seen with.

“We can’t confirm with a degree of certainty that he was there,” LeMay said.

It is too bad that the info coming from RCMP is sketchy.   They are saying Mike's CellPhone has not been on since the 17th....and a possible, but NOT confirmed sighting of him on the 17th in Pemberton.
Well the pertinent info would be what tower LAST picked up on Mike's phone on the 17th.

Kathy, I'm interested in knowing where the timeline comes from, as it appears to be a private site. Also curious as to who put the information together, particularly about the phone calls? Is that taken from the girls who's phones he apparently called?

I've been following this story closely on a couple of FB groups and it seems that there is a core group of friends working with the family and RCMP to put together information.  A private investigator has been hired today and RCMP dogs were at/near Mike's home today.  There are a couple of psychics/intuitives that are posting heavily on the FB group as well.

This man was well liked and very popular.  There has been such an outpouring of love and concern for his well-being since he went missing.  After reading all of the posts on the FB groups it would seem to me that there a few scenarios on people's minds:  a)he tried to walk somewhere and fell/was injured   b) he was robbed/kidnapped  c) he has been in a car wreck after leaving Pemberton and the car has not been found  d) he wanted some time alone and will re-surface when he's ready.

Here is a link to a website that has been put together and seems to be maintained by his friends - http://findmikegrefner.ca/ (http://findmikegrefner.ca/)

It doesn't sound good for Mike. I mean he was drunk that night and making all these calls. Why didn't he just go home and sleep it off. Why not go home to his parents for a while or some relatives and get in touch with the real world. Liquor can play on a person if they've had to much. They feel isolated and alone, especially if he was used to having a lot of friends around. He may have been thinking he was kind of a worthless character that evening. The taxi call should be cleared, I mean how long did it take to get from point A to point B. The cabbie may have known him and said he'd get the money later. But it would be interesting to know just what the timeline was here, befor the cabbie to his next call. Just a thought to check that out. If that was the last known place he was seen, except for the waitress seeing him with someone else.  :( :( :( :( :( :(

Whistler RCMP are continuing to request the public's assistance in locating a missing male.

File # 2012-01-26
2012-01-26 14:09 PST
Whistler RCMP continue to look for Michael GREFNER and a woman that may have possibly had coffee with Michael at a coffee shop in Pemberton, on the morning of January 19th. So far, there has been no additional information identifying this woman.

Police are also asking for the public's assistance in identifying the owner or driver of a white Jeep, possibly a YJ, that was observed parked and idling for some time between 8:30 am and 11:30 am, on January 19th, about a block from where Michael was living, in the Rainbow Subdivision. While police are not certain that the Jeep has any connection to Michael's disappearance, they would like to speak to the driver who may have possibly seen something that can assist in the on-going investigation.

"Investigators have said that the updates and information provided by friends via the Facebook site have been very instrumental in assisting investigators with this case, certainly with respect to putting a time-line together on Michael's activities leading up to his disappearance".
To date, Whistler RCMP have received up to 15 Tips, all of which have been followed-up on by investigators.

Police have searched the residential subdivision, and nearby trail system with an avalanche trained search (CARDA) dog, but were not able to locate any indication of Michael's whereabouts as yet. Whistler RCMP are continuing to pursue every investigational avenue and possible lead in hopes of locating Michael as soon as possible.

Yesterday, January 25th, starting shortly after 10:00 am, approximately 20 of Michael's friends and concerned citizens gathered in the Function Junction area of south Whistler to search a number of sites along the train tracks where they felt Michael had possibly wandered off to. The search did not yield any results.

Michael GREFNER was last seen in the early morning hours of January 17th, 2012, at a nightclub in Whistler Village. He did not show up for work the following evening, which is extremely out of character for him. After making attempts to locate Michael on their own, his friends and colleagues reported him missing to police shortly after midnight on the 19th.

Michael GREFNER is described as a Caucasian male, 34 years of age, 6'2", with a slim build. He has short curly brown hair, green eyes, an olive complexion, and is clean shaven.

If anyone has seen Michael GREFNER since January 16, 2012 or had contact with him in the days leading up to his disappearance, you are requested to call Whistler RCMP at (604) 932-3044.

New to this but I had to add this link to the Whistler paper. Does anyone else think it odd that at 11:35 pm on the night Mike went missing, there was an explosion in the Callaghan Valley parking lot that has resulted in an IHIT investigation?

There have been a couple of fundraisers talked about lately but that is pretty much all.  If there is news, no one is sharing it.  People are not as positive as they once were and frustration is started to show in some of the posts.  This man had so many friends and they are just wanting to get answers one way or another.

Recco search for missing DJ produces nothing
RCMP still hoping for lead on disappearance

by Andrew Mitchell

This past week Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol members joined the search for missing Whistler DJ Mike Grefner, using their avalanche skills to help search the snowbanks along the highway near the Rainbow subdivision. The previous week's search turned up a pair of shoes, roughly 60 metres apart, that could have fit Grefner — although the RCMP has not been able to determine whether the shoes resemble any owned by the 34-year-old.
The RCMP used avalanche probes and police dogs to search the shoulder of the road where the shoes were found, but came up empty so this week they called patrollers who used Recco avalanche devices to search the snow. The devices are usually used with other avalanche transceivers, but they can detect items like diodes on cell phones as well. However, nothing turned up. The RCMP said no new tips on Grefner's whereabouts have come up in the last week.
Grefner was last heard from around 5 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 17. He failed to turn up for a DJ shift at Maxx Fish on Jan. 18, which was out of character. Around 2 a.m. on Jan. 19 his friends called the RCMP.
Grefner's friends and family are continuing to search for him, and some friends believe that he may have left town. However, he has not used his cell phone or accessed his bank account since he went missing. He did not own a passport.

Saturday March 10 a couple out for a hike discovered the remains of a human body in the Whistler area (Alpine Meadows).  Many people are thinking this will be Mike the DJ would went missing from Whistler this past January. The coroners office is now investigating. I looked to see if there had been a post started about Mike Grefner but I could not find one.

Human remains found in Whistler
By Aleesha Harris, Vancouver Sun March 11, 2012 4:23 PM

A pair of hikers stumbled across human remains in a wooded area near Alpine Meadows in Whistler on Saturday, according to Whistler RCMP.

The couple were reportedly walking east of Highway 99 around 4:42 p.m., when they came across the remains and called police.

“The forensics team is still out working away at the scene,” said Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair Sunday afternoon. “They’re holding the scene overnight again for more work to be done tomorrow.”

The Sea to Sky General Investigation Section has confirmed the remains are human – however – the level of decomposition has made an identification impossible so far. LeClair said right now there’s no indication that the remains are connected to the Michael Grefner, a Whistler DJ who suddenly went missing on Jan. 9.

Police continue to investigate and have said foul play is not suspected at this point.

Hikers find human remains in Whistler, B.C.
By MICHAEL MUI, QMI Agency
Last Updated: March 12, 2012 12:21am

A young couple hiking in a wooded area outside of Whistler, B.C., discovered a decomposing body Saturday and friends of popular local DJ Mike Grefner who went missing in January are praying it isn’t him.

Police said the couple was hiking in the Alpine Meadows area — about five kilometres north of Whistler Village — when they stumbled upon what they believed to be human remains.

The body was in such bad shape police were unable to tell its gender, age or ethnicity.

RCMP were uncertain how long the body had been there.

“There’s no indication of foul play,” said Sgt. Steve LeClair, adding the area wasn’t very frequented in winter months.

Sunday morning, police had yet to check the deceased’s clothing for identification, opting to wait for the coroner to transport the body to the lab.

But friends fear the body might be Grefner’s.

“I just pray that it isn't Mike, but in the same breathe that the family of the deceased is at peace,” wrote Kyle Morris on a Facebook site dedicated to finding Grefner, 34.

“Love and Peace to all you great souls!! Love especially to Katherine and the Grefner family!!”

Grefner’s mysterious disappearance dates back to Jan. 17 when he was last seen in Whistler Village. He was reported missing after failing to turn up for work the next day.

Police were seeking a woman who may have met with Grefner at a Pemberton, B.C., coffee shop the morning of Jan. 19. A white Jeep was also spotted idling that morning near his residence.

Family friend Quan Diep came out with a statement shortly after RCMP went public with the discovery.

“We have been in very close contact with the proper authorities,” Diep said, adding he expected more information Monday or Tuesday.

i've been checking sites all day, hoping to find an i.d. on this body found in alpine meadows. part of me wonders if it is that of owen rooney, since they say it was so badly decomposed (may have been there much longer than 2 months), but that would be quite unlikely.

Weather the main contributing factor in this death.

http://www.piquenewsmagazine.com/whistler/coroner-says-drugs-contributed-to-djs-death/Content?oid=2441187

The BC Coroner's Service released its report on the death of Whistler's Mike Grefner on Nov. 21, concluding that the 34-year-old DJ "ingested a toxic level of cocaine and went outside on one of the coldest nights of the year."

Grefner was first reported missing after failing to show up for a shift at a local nightclub. The last time he was seen was at his home in the early morning hours of Jan. 17 and his absence was noted on Jan. 19.

Friends and family searched for almost two months, and sightings of Grefner came in from Alberta and further abroad. However, Grefner's remains were found on Mar. 10 near Whistler Secondary School.

According to the coroner's report, Grefner's behavior on the night he went missing was consistent with intoxication and some witnesses say he was more intoxicated than they had ever seen him before. He was also not dressed for the weather, which dipped below -20 degrees. He was found wearing shoes, jeans and a long-sleeve shirt.

The exact cause of death is unknown or how much the cold weather contributed, but coroner Isis van Loon wrote that "Toxicology testing showed significant concentrations of cocaine and its byproducts at a high enough level to cause death." As well, low concentrations of alcohol were identified, but it's possible that alcohol played a greater role and the lower concentrations were the result of postmortem changes.

As for the cold, the coroner wrote that "extreme cold was a contributory factor."

The coroner's report comes six weeks after another report on the death of Irish national Dave Christian was released to the public. That report determined that Christian, who went missing after drinking at a bar with friends on St. Patrick's Day, Mar. 17, died as a result of hypothermia, with acute alcohol intoxication "considered a contributing factor in his death."

Both deaths are classified as accidental.
