'Person of interest' investigated in Dorothy Woods disappearance
Jeremy Warren, The StarPhoenix
Published: Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Friends and family of Dorothy Woods continue to search for the missing Saskatoon woman while Saskatoon police investigate a "person of interest" who was arrested on unrelated firearms charges.

Major crimes investigators have interviewed a 49-year-old man who they consider a person of interest in the suspicious disappearance of Woods, 45. The married mother of two was last seen leaving her home in the early morning of Nov. 12 and she has yet to contact family or friends.

The man appeared in Saskatoon provincial court Monday to face numerous firearms charges and charges related to uttering threats in separate incidents. He was remanded and appears in court again today.

The man's address in court documents is the same as Woods's Riel Crescent home, where she also ran the Artsy Fartsy Daycare. He was arrested and charged on Friday. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence and searched it on Friday and Saturday.

It's unclear why a search warrant was required for Woods's own home.

"For whatever reasons, our investigators required warrants," police spokesperson Alyson Edwards said.

Police seized four guns from the home, including a Winchester 12-gauge shotgun, a Davenport 10-gauge shotgun, an FN rifle and a CVA Apollo .50-calibre Muzzleloader, according to court documents. Charges range from unsafe storage of a firearm to possessing unlicensed firearms.

The charges of uttering threats stem from incidents involving two city men, with one incident happening on Nov. 15 and the second sometime between Nov. 6 and 16.

The major crimes unit is investigating the suspicious disappearance, which is unusual for a missing person case, Edwards said.

"Major crimes became involved early on when it became clear after speaking with friends and family that this is not typical behaviour for Dorothy Woods," Edwards said.

The person of interest was being interviewed about Woods and the threats when he was arrested on the firearms charges, Edwards said. Police are now interviewing new people and reinterviewing people.

Friends and family of Woods, who is an active member of the local roller derby community, have been door knocking throughout city neighbourhoods and distributing "missing" flyers in an organized effort to find her. Friends are taking the flyers to work, on trips outside the city and posting them in businesses.

Frank and Lawrence Carter, who are Woods's brothers, were in Prince Albert on Monday distributing the flyers.

"We're focused on finding our sister," Frank said.

The brothers praised the efforts of everybody who has helped search for Woods.

"Everybody's going hard and we appreciate that," Frank said. "We're dealing with the situation the best way we can and we're hoping for a positive outcome."

Police investigators appreciate the organized search effort headed by Woods's family and friends, Edwards said.

"It's by talking about it and getting information out there that we might become aware of information we didn't have be-fore," she said. "We need as much assistance from the public as possible."

Edwards said the up-dated "last seen" time was due to an error in the first news release about Woods, which said she was last seen leaving her home in the early morning of Nov. 11. Woods was reported missing earlier last week.

Investigators believe there has been no evidence yet to suggest Woods left Saskatoon.

"We have not had any information to indicate she has left town or is visiting another city," Ed-wards said.

Anyone with information about Woods or her disappearance is asked to call police at 975-8300.

There is quite a bit of coverage on this missing person in Saskatchewan, if people can help add some media stories that would be helpful!

Saskatoon police seized a computer from Dorothy Woods’ home on Riel Crescent after acting on a search warrant on Tuesday morning.

This comes after 49-year-old David Woods was deemed a person of interest in the case of his missing wife Dorothy.

David made his second court appearance, also on Tuesday, on charges unrelated to 45-year-old Dorothy Woods’ disappearance.

He was charged over the weekend after police searched his Saskatoon home and found unlicensed guns.

He was also charged with uttering death threats to two Saskatoon men earlier this month.

Woods was released on bail Tuesday under a number of conditions, including having no firearms, alcohol or contact with three people. His next court appearance is slated for Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m.

Dorothy Woods has been missing since Nov. 12. Police are calling her disappearance suspicious.

Social media used to help search for Woods

Friends and family of missing Saskatoon woman Dorothy Woods are using Facebook to share information, organize searches and console one another.

The Facebook page "Let's Find Dot" has almost 500 members and hundreds of postings, and started as a way to keep track of which businesses had been given missing person flyers.

It has since become a way for users to share news articles and reminisce about Woods.

One group user wrote "Dot Is A Great Person With The Biggest Heart... She Would Do The Same For Any One Of Her Friends... We Just Want Her To Come Home."

Using social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter emerged as a trend of taking missing persons cases online.

Pages were created for high profile missing persons in Sask. such as Carol King and Rob Vicente. Organizations such as Child Find Sask. also keep active social media accounts.

Meanwhile Dorothy Woods’ case is being exposed to a larger audience via celebrity Twitter accounts.

Shannon Tweed, who has family ties to Saskatoon, has retweeted about Woods' disappearance to her followers. Tweed’s Twitter account has nearly 200,000 followers.

Woods had previously posted photos of herself on Facebook with Tweed’s husband Gene Simmons.

Facebook user Gina Layna Licken Bailey posted in the group “Let’s Find Dot!” that Tweed’s son Nick has also posted it in both his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Okay, I see that this woman is missing.  She ran a daycare from her home.  And it had unregistered  guns in it, as well as her husband who likes to give out death threats, and drinks alot..
Adding it all up, this is not looking good for Dorothy. She must have silently suffered and   lived through alot with him.

And then there is  the small question of licensing this home for a day care in the first place, with this dangerous man living there.

There's a problem with dayhomes in that they are not monitored regularly. Also when they are to be visited, the day home owner is forewarned. Licenses are required for more than 5 children, I believe. She may have been a very good provider, but the guns and a man like her husband are certainly issues. Unfortunately most places are short of dayhomes and pretty well anyone is welcome to start one. A situation like this will cause some inspections to be done for awhile.

I hope they find Dorothy alive.

Wondering did it in fact state that the day care was actually in her Home?  I am not sure on that.  Tons of people actually have unregisterd guns actual, like a gun handed down from grandfather to grandson etc. Not to say everyone who has an unregistered gun is bad.  Off the top of my head I probably can count about fifteen people I know.  Lots of older hunters figure the registry is hogwash and never bothered I believe.  These weren't hand guns they were rifles right.

This is scarey. wondering why the husband didn't get the guns etc out of the house when she first went missing, thats what I would do , then let them search the house. jmo

JB yep they are all rifles.  One is an antique.  LOL I do police combat training would have loved to see the muzzle loader.  I think they are all innocent enough guns, not like the ones punks are running around shooting people with.  Not to say they were not used of illegal purposes.  But I think this fellow had them for years and years

Woman not reported missing for 4 days, police say
CBC News Posted: Nov 24, 2011 1:28 PM CST Last Updated: Nov 24, 2011 1:20 PM CST

Saskatoon Police investigating the disappearance of a Saskatoon woman are focusing on a 96-hour period between when she was last seen and when a family member reported her missing.

Police are attempting to trace the actions of Dorothy Ann Woods, called Dot by her friends, who was last seen outside her home on Riel Crescent on Remembrance Day.

They told CBC News that there was a four-day gap between that sighting and when they were told about her disappearance.

"Investigators really became alerted early the following week. Around Nov. 16, I believe," said Cst. TishaRae Stonehouse.

Stonehouse confirmed that an immediate family member reported the disappearance, but wouldn't say which one. Woods, 45, has a husband and two children — a teenage daughter and a pre-teen son.

When Woods was seen close to midnight on Nov. 11, she was wearing straight-legged black jeans and a black v-neck sweater. Stonehouse would not discuss whether there has been activity with Woods' bank account, credit cards or cell phone.

Stonehouse said that 96-hour gap is critical to learning what happened to Woods.

"To trace back, as far as they can, her whereabouts after that last known, immediate family sighting," she said.

Police have also spoken to a man they are calling a person of interest in the case.

As well, Woods' friends are going door to door hoping to find clues to her whereabouts.

They say the disappearance is uncharacteristic of the outgoing woman, who played in a roller derby league and ran a daycare.

About a hundred gathered in Kiwanis Park to show support and muster hope for missing Saskatoon woman

Reported by Jared Knoll

First Posted: Nov 26, 2011 7:42pm | Last Updated: Nov 26, 2011 9:36pm

A candlelight vigil for Dorothy Woods was held at the Vimy Memorial in Saskatoon's Kiwanis Park on Saturday night, to support the missing woman's friends and family, and send a message of hope.

Woods' brothers Frank and Lawrence Carter were there, and both spoke to thank everyone for coming out, encourage people to keep searching and putting up posters, and struggled against visibly intense emotions to maintain a level of hope and optimism.

Frank Carter focused on his excitement at how powerful the drive has been to get his sister's name and face out in the public eye.

"It's been incredible, every business that's put up posters," said Frank.

"Everywhere you drive in the city you're seeing [them]."

He was overjoyed that people in both Regina and Prince Albert were putting them up.

But if he could speak to Dorothy now, he would have one very simple message.

"Dorothy just come home, everybody really misses you," he said.

We'll get together and have a good Christmas meal."

Lawrence Carter was happy to see so many people out in support "to get his sister home safe and sound".

"Help from the roller girls has been tremendous at this difficult and trying time."

Frank and Lawrence both asked people to contact the city police if they have any information about Woods' location, by contacting Saskatoon police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Woods was last seen in the early hours of Nov. 12 and was reported missing three days earlier.

Police spokesperson Alyson Edwards has called the case "very sensitive", and Woods' husband David has been deemed a person of interest. Unlicensed guns and a computer were seized from their Saskatoon home, and he has been in court twice since his wife's disappearance on unrelated charges.

Just a note....we all might learn from the Terrie Ann Dauphinais thread...just because a person is labeled as a "person of interest", that doesn't mean that he/she is the automatic antagonist.

Yes, there are some inconsistencies, but unless you have a "balls out" confession, all there can be is speculation.  Until more information comes out, there shouldn't be a witch hunt against this woman's husband...

Just saying.....

Rose I dont think there is a witch hunt against her husband, as I said in prior posts the gun are all ones that may have been handed down in a family.  We are all praying and hoping and waiting that Dorthy is safe and found soon.  The longer her being missing goes on the worse it looks I am afraid thought.  We cant give up yet that she will be found safe?  Do you know Dorthy and her family Rose if so my thoughts are with you all.  She sounds like such a wonderful person .

The whole city is hoping for her safe return.  It is amazing to see so many people from different walks of life come together for a cause.
Here's hoping this vibrant woman will be found.

Again, just my opinion......many people exhibit grief and stress in different ways.  If her husband has chosen not to be public at this time, it is his right to.  I am sure he has offered all the information he possibly can, especially if he was questioned by the Saskatoon Police Service.  Sometimes, you just don't have the information someone is seeking.  He may not be participating in the searches because of people instantly judging him and condemning him.  He may be choosing to stay at home and take care of his family while the SPS conducts their investigation.  Sometimes when a person is in shock, they are more of a hindrance than a help to the investigation.

Again, just my opinion.  I mentioned the Terrie Dauphinais case and I should have mentioned the Melanie Jerome case where in both cases the media and some people flamed and blamed the husbands.  There was absolutely no proof in either case.  After seeing the ugliness, especially in the Dauphinais case, it is important that we respect all of the people involved and understand that different people deal with things differently.

That being said, I do understand statistics and I do understand the need of the Police Services to explore every avenue.

Her husband certainly has his hands full.  The police did publicy say that he was a person of interest. I don't think any of us on this board have taken that stance.  In fact very few comments, if any.  It was not helpful when one of her friends who saw Dot the day before her disappearnce,  shone  the spotlight on Dot's husband as possibly being the cause.
All of the above being said, it would not be the first time that a husband has been  under suspicion, only to be proven innocent.

There is also a possibility that she was depressed. (not saying she was) Many times long term depressed people appear to be happy and jovial, and those around her/him are shocked to learn otherwise. We have similar cases on this board.

Best wishes for a successful search in locating her. I do not live in Saskatchewan, or I would be there to assist.

I have been thinking of this little family lately, and wondering how they are coping through all of this.  The father (husband) and the children are living a true nightmare, and my heart goes out to them. I sincerely hope that friends and relatives will rally around them and give them emotional support. They certainly need it.

Let us hope that Dot is located soon.

JB, you are correct as well. It was a friend of Dorothy that really very much incriminated the husband. She's also on video stating rather bluntly. The police were just doing what one says in a case like that, they check the immediate family first.
Friends that saw Dorothy late the night before she disappeared had said she wasn't herself and she wasn't feeling well. That, whatever it was, could be totally unrelated to the husband. Were they checking hospitals and ER's in Saskatoon and surrounding areas, phoning all friends and relatives?

Perhaps they did report it the next day but the police would not let them file a missing person report, until a certain time has lapsed, as in many cases, ie Perry Wong and Eloise Fendellett of Edmonton? No doubt they did call her friends looking for her?

Yes, I keep forgetting about that "adult" clause ... Well I think something needs to change about that as some police pull out all the stops immediately and others wait. Sometimes adults do vanish on their own will as we've seen with that one case in Ontario ... yet police need to make certain of it and that the person is safe.

Unfortunately, if Dorothy suffers from depression and has gone off in the past, maybe her family has come to expect this behaviour.  Since you can't report an adult missing until 48 hours have elapsed, this really makes it look as if there is some indifference on behalf of the family.

I wanted to mention the "friend" who went on TV to say she wouldn't be surprised that the husband "did" it.  Many people open their traps on TV, just to say they were on TV.  I remember a case in my home town (Windsor, On) where a woman murdered her 4 year old boy.  The little boy went to the same daycare as my daughter.  This woman seemed pleasant enough, but kept to herself.  We would smile and say hi in passing.  When the news broke that she stabbed her little boy, one of the neighbours went on TV saying that she wasn't surprised that the woman killed her boy.  The neighbour based her supposition all on the fact that the  woman was a stripper.

I don't know any of the people who are involved in this case, I'm just hoping like the rest of the nation that Dorothy is found.

Vigil held for missing Saskatoon woman
Dorothy 'Dot' Woods missing for 2 weeks
CBC News Posted: Nov 27, 2011 8:45 PM CST Last Updated: Nov 27, 2011 8:56 PM CST

A candlelight vigil was held over the weekend for a Saskatoon woman who has been missing for the past two weeks.

Dorothy Ann Woods, 45, was last seen outside her home on Riel Crescent on Nov. 11. Police say they were told about her disappearance four days later.

Woods, seen in a Facebook photograph, plays as a blocker for the Slamazons, a team in the Saskatoon Roller Derby League. On Saturday, more than 100 people attended the vigil at Kiwanis Park for Woods, known to her friends as Dot. A volunteer ground search around Saskatoon was planned for Sunday.

"It warms the heart to see the community pulling together and coming together to show their support to bring my sister home," Lawrence Carter, Woods's brother, told CBC News.

Carter said the community's show of support really means a lot to Woods's family.

"Everyone misses Dorothy an incredible amount," he said. "We just need to bring Dot home."

Woods has a husband and two children — a teenage daughter and a pre-teen son.

When last seen close to midnight on Nov. 11, Woods was wearing straight-legged black jeans and a black v-neck sweater.

Saskatoon police have said they are focusing on the 96-hour period between the time she was last seen and when she was reported missing by a family member.

Dot had a day care center to run, and I cannot see her running away(honestly - I can't)  In addition, if she did go away for some time to herself, she would have contacted her family in order to stave off worry.

Even depression should be considered.

I don't know Dorothy, nor do I know her family.

I am hoping that during the search for Dorothy someone will be able to tell these volunteers when they last saw her, to give them a clue as to which direction she was heading in.
Did Dorothy take her car - or was she walking away? Somehow I have the impression that she was walking (?)

I am praying that somehow this nightmare comes to an end, and that she is reunited with family and friends shortly.

SAP,
I want you to know that I'm not trying to be antagonistic, even if it comes across that way...honestly ;D

You are right when you say that we don't really know.  A depression speculation has been mentioned.  I think it is a good one.  People who suffer from depression are fantastic at hiding things until one day they are overwhelmed and cannot keep up the facade any longer.  If Dorothy does have some depression, "running away" could be a completely acceptable solution in her mind.  The pressure of life in general is enough to make me want to run away on a daily basis.... :-[

I hope the search turns up something.  Any little thing could help.

Hi listen everyone, we are doing a ground search it does not say that her husband has done it at all she has been gone for 4 weeks, with no trace at all.  This is not a witch hunt or anything to do with that, I want to make sure we all work together gosh, this is a human being and the only thing I want to do and hope other want to as well is find her no matter what the outcome is, she is a awesome beautiful person who deserves the utmost respect so will you please just think of it that way.  I miss her so dearly, and I am getting upset because everyone has a remark or something to say.  I just want her found for her families sake and her dad Arnold, can we just get on with the search and keep comments away from the facts.  I am very sorry that I cannot say anything or update because they are investigating it and was told not to say much so I must respect the investigators wishes.  Very sorry I wish I could but it is up to them to say not up to anyone who they have questioned .
Thank you

Curley: None of us here are on a witch hunt.  We want her to return home. No one knows why she disappeared.  The police are investigating and that is a good thing.  I hope that you and your group can uncover something during your physical search for her. It is cold and there is snow on the ground, which will make it all the more difficult.
Yes, she is a beautiful person, going by all that she has done in her adult life re: a facebook.  She strikes me as having a heart of gold.

Each missing woman is special to her family and friends on this site, and there are too many of them missing. All too often they are wives and mothers who were unique and special to their friends and family.

I am concerned for her welfare and the outcome of this.
Someone knows something, or has seen something.  I hope that the police will be able to bring this to a speedy conclusion for her family and her friends sake
Have you been successful in getting people together for another search?

Dot if for some reason you are reading this, please contact one of your friends.  They are worried sick.

We all hope and pray that Dorothy will be found safe and if that is not possible, at least to bring her home where she belongs and is loved. If I were in Sask, I would certainly help with searching, and I wish you all well in the search.

That being said, this is not facebook; it's a DISCUSSION forum for missing and murdered persons. Since this forum's inception, the general gist is that discussions take place on WHEN, WHY, HOW, WHO, and FOR WHAT REASON. Points made in newspaper articles/news articles are questioned and pondered. That is the way it has been from the very beginning. That is what discussion forums do. That is what we do. If we are just going to be listing the missing and murdered without discussions, and listing news articles, this site wouldn't make the google pages where people look for answers much of the time.

Dot Woods search passes one-month mark
Some losing hope that Saskatoon woman could be found alive
CBC News Posted: Dec 11, 2011 7:12 PM CST Last Updated: Dec 11, 2011 7:11 PM CST

Search efforts continue for a Saskatoon woman who has been missing for a month, but at least one friend is losing hope of her being found alive.

More than 40 people took part in a search over the weekend, scouring areas outside of Saskatoon.

"It's been a month. No contact of any kind. I don't believe she's with us anymore," Sandra Lukowich, a close friend of Woods, told CBC News.

"But I know that we need to find her to bring some closure to this for the family and for everybody that's involved."

Woods has a husband and two children — a teenage daughter and a pre-teen son.

Police have plastered the city with posters and conducted a number of searches during the past month.

Lukowich said the focus of this weekend's search was different.

"We're looking for any clues," she said. "I'm sorry, but I guess why we're searching a ground search is to find a body."

Police now suspect foul play in the disappearance of Dorothy Woods

Friends and family of missing Saskatoon woman Dorothy Woods spread out in search of her all weekend, turning up nothing.
Saskatoon police now say she may have been the victim of foul play.
Woods' friend Sandy Lukowich still holds out hope, but admits that the prospects are now bleak.
"She has not been in contact with anybody at all," she said.
"For a mother to not have any contact for that long of a period, it does not look good."
Woods' husband remains a person of interest in the case.

zz454: So after all is said and done, Dot's missing comes full circle. I hope that her children are being cared for and not left to fend. I would imagine that family will take them away from all of this. It must be difficult for them - it must be a nightmare for these kids. God how they will need some strong person to be there for them right now.
My thoughts go out to Dot's children.

Foul play suspected in Woods case

THE STARPHOENIX DECEMBER 13, 2011

Dorothy Woods, now missing for one month, could be the victim of foul play, Saskatoon police say.

Woods, 45, was last seen leaving her home in the early morning of Nov. 12 and has not been in contact with family or friends, which investigators consider unusual behaviour for the married mother of two. Police said previously the disappearance was suspicious, but now investigators say Woods is possibly the victim of foul play, according to a police news release.

Investigators are asking residents in rural areas surrounding Saskatoon to search their properties and keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Rural landowners should check abandoned buildings, well sites and far-flung property for anything suspicious, the release said.

A 49-year-old man who police have interviewed as a "person of interest" in the investigation has been in court to face unrelated firearms and uttering threats charges. The man, who shares a home address with Woods, was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon provincial court on Dec. 14. He remains a person of interest, police said Monday.

Friends and family of Woods continue to search Saskatoon and the surrounding area for any sign of the woman.

Just heard some news today and I figured this would be the place to put it.  I am sure there will be more to follow.

Yesterday Saskatoon RCMP were called to a location outside of Saskatoon to investigate a body that was found in the ditch.  The body is that of a female.  As of 20 min ago when announced on the radio, the victim has not been identified.

I put it here because Dorothy is most likely the person that was found.  Hopefully there will be a press conference and it will be posted here.

Here is the link for the announcement of the finding of the body.  Not wanting to jump to conclusions, but could this be Dorothy Ann?  As far as I know, she is the only female that is missing recently from the Saskatoon area.

This person may not be Dorothy, as most reports claim the body was found in a ditch beside a well travelled service road. A body would be hard to miss, being there for this length of time. imo.

I agree with SAP. Dorothy has been missing for quite some time (November). They would find remains if it were her, not a body.

No one has yet to answer whether Dorothy's car was left at her home. (I assume she had her own car)
Dorothy was a large strong woman, and I am thinking that she must have willingly got into a car with the suspect and then driven out of town.

Unfortunately, Saskatchewan is riddled with many grid roads that many people have forgotten about.  It is also sparsely populated and sometimes areas aren't visited for a long time.  The other unfortunate part is that Saskatchewan has many lakes and waterways.

Haven't heard any updates in the news lately about Dorothy.  Not good news for her friends and family....

It was expected right from the start.  He was a suspect.  I think he relented and told the police as to where he had taken her. I had negative feelings about her being found alive, right from the start, although many others might have felt the same.  But what can you say as a poster?

I hope her children can find some family member to love them and comfort them, and take care of them and protect them, and ensure that somehow these children can overcome this trauma and become strong citizens.
That is my concern.

Who knows what went wrong between her and her husband.  Domestic abuse going on there?  - possibly!
Possibly does not mean probably.

In any event, this is very sad.

The saving grace here, is that they have an uncle who loved his sister deeply,  and will ensure that Dot's children are taken care of in a kind and gentle manner.

God Bless them and may the Lord walk with them during their terrible times ahead.

Peace
JB
Ps: My heart goes out to his parents and his  family as well. They also are grieving at this time, I am sure.

Well, in my heart, I am hoping that he is innocent. Mr. Woods (judging by his age) may also have a Mom and Dad and siblings. And they must be going through such a turmoil right now.
I can imagine the concern that they have for him. This is a very serious charge against him.   He was a suspect from day one.

In any event, it is up to a jury, or a judge to decide.

I sincerely hope that he has good represenation in the court of law.  He is entitled to a fair trial.

I am finished posting on here.

Nothing more to say., on my part,  other than so many people are grieving right now.

Tensions were high in a Saskatoon court when the brother of Dorothy Woods came face to face with the man accused of killing his sister.

David Woods, the woman's husband, was in court for another appearance on a charge of first-degree murder.

The body of the Saskatoon woman, who had been missing since Nov. 12, was found in a rural area by police investigators in January. They have not disclosed how she died but quickly arrested and charged her husband.

Larry Carter was in court Thursday and had a brief encounter with his brother-in- law, that surprised him.

" kind of shrugged my shoulders out, kind of like asking "Why?" Carter said outside of court. "And he just mouthed, I believe it was 'F--k you.' And that was it from him."

Carter said he did not notice anything out of the ordinary in the couple's marriage and added that he and David got along.

"We're both quiet guys, kind of hard working guys," he said. "[We] always helped each other out with this and that. Don't know why this had to happen, didn't have to happen."

The court appearance was brief and the accused man remains in custody. His lawyer said no decision has been made on whether Woods will apply for bail.

His next court appearance is set for February.

I think this is going to turn into a very intense and emotional court case.

How can an ordinary hard working man, friends with the family members, work hand in hand and kill their wife over nothing. It is unbelievable the violence that goes on in this country lately. If it is not a wife and mother, it is a chld being abused by either parent. It is so sick and disturbing. Anyone who has to much on their plate out there, go for help, ask someone to help you. And if you are in fear of your spouse, get out, get help, make a plan. But this lady could have been going to a lot and hiding it. The real thing is, do not hide it, it could save your life. God bless the children and her brother and other family members. RIP Dorothy. Another senseless act of violence. :'( :'( :'( :'(

We were given clues.

First of all Dot's girlfriend pointed a finger at her husband.
Second - Dot appeared to be fearful when having coffee with her friend (but I assume Dot said nothing but only appeared to be nervous and looking at the doors)
Third - and to me this is even more  ominous - neighbours knew little about them, (no interaction)
This family, even with a daycare centre, -KEPT TO THEMSELVES.
Who knows what went on behind those closed doors? - after hours?
And sadly last, her husband had made death threats to two men.

I hope her children are being cared for by loving relatives.

Preliminary hearing set for David Woods

Charged with murdering his wife Dorothy

Reported by Bre McAdam
First Posted: Feb 27, 2012 6:09pm

A preliminary hearing has been set for the man accused of killing Dorothy Woods.

David Woods appeared by video in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Monday and he set to be back on October 15 this year.

Woods is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife who went missing November 12 2011. Her body was found in a culvert near Blackstrap Lake on January 4.

A trial could be set if the crown determines there is enough evidence during the preliminary hearing.

Woods also faces outstanding charges of uttering threats to two Saskatoon men along with several firearms charges from when his home was searched shortly after his wife went missing.

A Saskatoon man accused of murder in the death of his wife last fall is asking a judge to order his release from custody while his trial is pending.

David Woods, 49, appeared in Court of Queen's Bench chambers Thursday for a three-hour bail review hearing.

The information and arguments presented at the hearing - including extensive details of the Crown's case against him - are subject to a broad publication ban.

Justice Peter Foley is expected to deliver a written ruling on Woods's application for release on Monday.

The body of Dorothy Woods, a 45-year-old day care operator and mother of two, was found by police in early January in a drainage culvert near the south shore of Blackstrap Lake, about 40 kilometres south of Saskatoon. The cause of her death has not been publicly released.

City police arrested and charged David Woods with first-degree murder about two days later.

Dorothy Woods, known to many as "Dot," was an active member of Saskatoon's roller derby community. Following her disappearance last November, friends and relatives blanketed Saskatchewan and Alberta with missing person posters in hopes of finding her alive.

According to provincial court records, city police charged Woods with several firearms-related offences, as well as uttering threats against two local men, a few days after Dorothy went missing.

The firearms were recovered when a search warrant was executed at the family's Nutana Park home.

Police later conducted a second search of the home in January, after her body was found.

At a provincial court appearance on Jan. 18, a Crown prosecutor said Woods was also facing a new charge of breaching a recognizance.

Woods's preliminary hearing on the murder charge is scheduled for October.

If he is committed to stand trial at the conclusion of that hearing, it will likely be at least another year before his trial begins in Court of Queen's Bench.

Woods, 49, was charged with first-degree murder in January in the death of Dorothy "Dot" Woods, whose body was found in a culvert near Blackstrap Lake.

Dorothy Woods had been missing since she was last seen at her home on Nov. 12.

A Saskatoon court released David Woods on bail Monday afternoon, after his mother posted a $10,000 non-cash surety as a condition of his release.

Woods faces a number of restrictions, including house arrest and electronic monitoring. He is expected to return to his job at a potash mine, but he must otherwise stay in his home except in case of medical emergencies.

Woods can request permission to leave the house for up to three hours on other occasions, but he must be supervised by his mother or his adult son in those cases, the court ruled.

According to the court, Woods can have only one cellphone, but he must provide a log of incoming and outgoing calls to a probation or peace officer upon request.

The court also imposed a list of people Woods must not contact, as well as ordered him to stay out of bars, not possess any weapons, and not contact his two younger children during school hours.

Woods will return to court on May 22 to work out arrangements related to access to his children.

David Woods's preliminary hearing begins in October.

First degree ... so he had intentions to murder his wife and he carried through. Isn't our justice system grand?!! Dorothy can never enjoy freedom ever again ... she was the victim.

I hope those that are watching him while he is on bail, don't kowtow to his whims of going out alone, as family are sometimes prone to do out of sympathy. Especially since a few people have spoken up against him and if he hasn't had any anger management therapy, I'm thinking he has been sitting and stewing mentally while incarcerated.

As much as we may not like it , we must remember that this man has not been convicted.  He is charged but not convicted, and god know the police have been wrong in the past ie Milguard, Steven truscotte et.  I am thinking since the bail is quite low the judge must have reviewed the evidence the police had some what before making his decision.  JMO.

So he is IUPG. I dislike that term and it is a term for the courts.
Charges were laid after a re-investigation of the house they lived in together. They must have some evidence, at least for manslaughter ... eg: wounds on the body. He was the only suspect iirc.

Man accused in slaying of wife allowed conditional contact with children
David Woods is banned from discussing the criminal case with them

Reported by Bre McAdam

A Saskatoon man accused of killing his wife can contact his kids, under the condition that he does not discuss the murder case with them.

Justice Peter Foley made the decision during today's final release hearing for David Woods, who received bail earlier this month.

Foley ruled Woods is banned from communicating anything about the case that could influence his children's testimony.

Other details of the conditions of the contact cannot be reported because they are covered by a publication ban.

The previous condition only allowed Woods to visit his children while supervised by social services.

Woods is charged with the first degree murder of his wife Dorothy Woods.

A Saskatoon judge's decision to release David Woods on bail while he awaits trial for first-degree murder in the death of his wife Dorothy has been reversed by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal.

In a unanimous decision released Thursday, the higher court revoked the 49-year old's bail and ordered him to surrender himself to police immediately.

"To follow any other course in the situation at hand would risk undermining the confidence of reasonable members of the public in not only the bail system, but in the justice system as a whole," the judges wrote.

Queen's Bench Justice Peter Foley ordered Woods released from custody on May 7 with strict conditions and a $10,000 surety, after hearing arguments from the Crown and defence at a bail review hearing.

Evidence and arguments presented at the hearing, as well as Foley's reasons for granting the bail application, are subject to a publication ban.

Dorothy Woods, a 45-year-old day care operator and mother of two, disappeared last November. Friends and relatives blanketed Saskatchewan and Alberta with missing person posters in hopes of finding her alive.

A few days after she was last seen, city police charged her husband with several firearms-related offences, as well as uttering threats against two Saskatoon men. The firearms were recovered in a search of the couple's home. Woods was released from custody on a recognizance at that time.

Investigators found the body of Dorothy Woods on Jan. 2, hidden in a drainage culvert near the south shore of Blackstrap Lake, about 40 kilometres south of Saskatoon.

Four days later, police arrested David Woods and charged him with first-degree murder. They also charged him with three counts of breaching his earlier recognizance.

Woods is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the murder charge in October.

What's wrong with these men anyway? Divorce is much simpler and they won't end up in jail over it, yet they go to extremes.

If all the controlling divorced men who said things like that would go to jail, we'd have a severe shortage of jails. They get angrier and more vindictive when they see the mom and kids can actually make it on their own.

excerpt

David Woods, the Saskatoon man accused of killing his wife nearly two years ago, will seek a court-appointed lawyer to represent him at his first-degree murder trial.

Woods gave up his plan to use equity from the family home to pay for a private lawyer after the public trustee opposed the plan in the interests of his two children, according to Crown prosecutor Michael Segu at Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday.

A trial was tentatively set to begin April 28, 2014.

Lawyer Michael Nolin has agreed to help Woods apply for the courts to pay for a private lawyer and then seek one who will take the case on the condition they be prepared to go to trial in April.

The trial is expected to last about four weeks.

What a creep, what a coward and slithery. Why not do the right thing and own up to what he did. Let the children have some peace, be a man an own up. He is still nothing but a coward and it's all about him trying to keep his ass out of jail for 25 years. Yes, this trial is going ahead, but what about a plea bargain, he'll try that, wait and see. A dispicable person and there are many out there like him, so sad to say. So very sad to say. Thank heavens in my lifetime I have not known anyone like this. It is evil that makes someone do this, it is about control, all about control and not wanting to divide up the assets of the marriage. No thought for the children, no thought at all. Totally selfish and cowardly. How can someone turn into such a hateful human being. Walk away, leave, get a divorce, go to another province and start a new life. But no, they know that when the wife and children are gone, THEY ARE ALONE. And you know what, that is failure, failure to provide for the family. Sad, but true. It's all about control. And so many women out there are living in such conditions and don't leave and they could end up like Dorothy some day.  :( :( :( :( :( :(

Woods murder trial begins today

BY HANNAH SPRAY, THE STARPHOENIX APRIL 28, 2014 8:41 AM

Dorothy Woods’ husband David Neil Woods stands trial Monday, accused of first-degree murder in her death.
Two and a half years after Dorothy Woods disappeared, the trial for her accused killer begins today in a Saskatoon courtroom.

David Neil Woods, 51, is charged with first-degree murder in his wife's death. His trial, set to be heard in front of a jury in Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench, is scheduled to last four weeks.

It begins this morning with jury selection, a process that could take hours, where 12 jurors and two alternates will be selected from among dozens of people who have received jury summons during the last few weeks.

The jurors will then spend the next few weeks hearing the Crown's evidence against David Woods.

Dorothy Woods, a mother of two who operated a daycare in the city, was 45 years old when she was last seen on Nov. 11, 2011. Her body was found in a culvert near Blackstrap Lake, south of Saskatoon, in early January 2012.

David Woods has been in custody since his arrest on a downtown Saskatoon street on Jan. 6, 2012, except for a nearly two-month period after he was granted bail in May 2012. The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal revoked his bail on June 28, 2012, after the Crown appealed.

After Woods waived his right to a preliminary hearing in provincial court, his trial was scheduled to begin Sept. 23, 2013, but it was adjourned after Woods dismissed his Legal Aid lawyer and applied for court-appointed counsel. In October, Saskatoon lawyer Michael Nolin was appointed to represent Woods and the trial was rescheduled to begin today.

Woods was back in court last month for a number of pre-trial motions, the contents of which are subject to a publication ban - as will be everything that is heard at his trial when the jury is not present.

Dorothy Woods was 'deeply unsatisfied' in marriage, murder trial hears
By Hannah Spray, The Starphoenix April 28, 2014

Dorothy Woods told her husband "their marriage was over" the day she disappeared, according to the Crown's opening statement at David Neil Woods's first-degree murder trial.

Afterwards, she sat on the couch and watched a movie with their two children on Nov. 11, 2011. That was the last time she was seen alive.

Crown prosecutor Michael Segu said Dorothy Woods was a woman who was active in the community, a loving mother and day care operator

"However, Ms. Woods was also a woman who was deeply unsatisfied with the state of her marriage and in fact reached out to other men for companionship and physical intimacy," Segu said.

He said he expects evidence to show text messages to two of Dorothy Woods's lovers from somebody claiming to be her husband, with accusations of impregnating his wife. Some of those messages were sent from her phone after she disappeared, Segu said.

Dorothy Woods's body was found after police installed GPS tracking on David Woods's vehicle and traced a route he took to the Blackstrap area, Segu said.

"You, the jury, will have the opportunity to travel that same route and determine for yourselves the reason for that trip," Segu said.

The 13-person jury, consisting of nine women and four men, is expected to hear that evidence and more during the four-week trial that began Monday in Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench.

There were 14 people selected for the jury, but before evidence started being heard, one person notified the judge he was related to a justice ministry official and was excused.

At the conclusion of the trial, 12 of the 13 jurors will be randomly selected to deliberate.

Woods, a mother of two who operated a daycare in the city, was 45 years old when she was last seen on Nov. 11, 2011. Her body was found in a culvert near Blackstrap Lake, south of Saskatoon, in early January 2012.

The victim was walking on very dangerous grounds - and never once saw it?

The story is very disturbing, and I have not posted everything that has appeared in the star phoenix.  Her affairs placed her in dangerous ground within her marriage. There are two sides to every story so they say. No excuse for murder, I'll admit ----- however, sudden jealous rage is blind to its consequences.

Very sad.  I feel terribly sad for the children. The children will never receive justice.  They have lost  a mother, and a father.  There is no justice for them.

Final arguments in David Woods murder trial today

Daughter testifies Dorothy Woods was at home night before sudden disappearance

The prosecution and defense will be making final arguments to the jury today at the David Woods murder trial.

Woods is accused of killing his wife Dorothy in 2011 and hiding her body in a culvert south of Saskatoon.

It's expected the judge will give his instructions to the jury on Thursday.

Daughter says mother was home

Late Tuesday afternoon, Woods' daughter Katelyn took the stand.

She testified her mother was at home the night police believe she disappeared.

After she went to bed, Katelyn testified she heard the front door open and close. She assumed it was her mother going to the bar.

She told the court she didn't hear any arguing between her mother and father that night, and that she heard her father snoring as she was going to bed.

The 18-year-old testified she had once had a strong relationship with her mother, but that had changed in recent months.

"She just didn't want to do anything with me anymore," Katelyn Woods said.

Katelyn testified her mother had been drinking heavily in the months before her mother disappeared, and would occasionally ask her to stay home from school, to look after the children in Woods' home-based daycare.

Lying to police

Earlier in the day, David Woods was cross-examined by the crown prosecutor.

Woods admitted to lying to police repeatedly in the days after his wife's disappearance.

He told police he believed his wife had left the house with a makeup bag, when he had thrown it into a garbage can in the backyard.

Woods also told police Dorothy had a number of credit cards when in fact he had placed them in a locked toolbox in the garage.

Woods also didn't tell police he and his wife had entered into an 'open relationship' in April of 2011.

"You were deliberately lying on multiple occasions to the very people who might be able to locate Dorothy," said crown prosecutor Michael Segu.

"They were just playing me," Woods responded. "They weren't trying to help me."

A mysterious note

Prosecutor Michael Segu also asked Woods about a mysterious note left on his truck in January 2012.

On the stand, he testified he had gone out to lunch that day with his brother and his children and when he came outside there was a note on his truck windshield.

The note directed him to take a drive south on Highway 11, and that he would find information concerning his missing wife.

Woods says he then took a drive to Blackstrap Lake. He didn't know that police had placed a GPS tracker on his truck.

That trip led police to his wife's body.

Police believe he drove through the area after local media reported that a body had been found outside the city

According to Woods, the note has since gone missing.  When asked why Woods didn't tell police or family members about the note, he says it didn't seem important at the time.

"I didn't find anything (during the trip)" said Woods. "Why would I tell anyone?"

Prosecutor Segu compared the note to a 'unicorn', saying Woods was the only one who had seen it.

Saskatoon man found guilty of first-degree murder in death of his wife

Bre Mcadam, Ckom, The Canadian Press
Thu, 15 May 2014 21:07:00 CST

SASKATOON - A Saskatoon man painted in court as a husband angered by his wife's many sexual dalliances with other men was found guilty Thursday of first-degree murder in her death.

David Woods was convicted by a jury of nine women and three men of strangling Dorothy Woods and dumping her body in a culvert south of Saskatoon between Nov. 11, 2011, and Jan. 4, 2012.

The Crown had argued David Woods killed his wife due to the looming stress of a divorce and the financial issues that would ensue.

The defence suggested he had been framed by the real killer and evidence planted in his garage.

Dorothy's relatives gasped at the verdict, many breaking into tears. Some thanked the jurors as they left the courtroom.

The court then heard victim impact statements from friends and relatives who described her as an amazing mother and daycare operator and "the life of the party."

Woods, who was sentenced to life with no parole for 25 years, said "no" when asked by the judge if he had anything to say.

Court heard testimony throughout the trial that the couple's marriage was on the rocks and that Dorothy had sexual encounters with multiple men.

Elizabeth Tawpisin testified that Dorothy, her best friend, told her that David would "kill her" if he found out about her dalliances with a couple of black men because he didn't like black people.

A couple of Dorothy's lovers, Wayne Lewis and Derrick Brown, testified they had received racist, threatening text messages from Dorothy's phone and believed they had been sent by her husband.

Crown prosecutor Michael Segu told the jury in closing arguments that after an argument, David knocked his wife unconscious, tied her wrists together and strangled her with a piece of rope used to tie down the family's pool tarp.

Segu suggested he then stored her body in a structure underneath the pool for a day while he bought polyurethane to wrap around her body and rope to replace the one used to strangle her.

Segu also questioned David's testimony that he and his wife were in an open relationship, wondering why he would then send angry text messages to her lovers and tell police that his wife was cheating.

The prosecutor noted that after media reported a woman's body had been found outside the city, David's truck was tracked by police GPS driving out to the area where Dorothy's body was found two days later.

Segu suggested David had "panicked," not knowing the media report was about a completely unrelated case.

RIP Dorothy. Mr. Woods is where he needs to be so he can rethink his obsession with not wanting to part with money through a divorce. In USA he would have gotten more than 25 years, I'm sure.

Appealing first-degree murder conviction. (CBC)

Convicted killer David Woods wants a new trial.

A jury in Saskatoon decided on May 15 that Woods had, in fact, murdered his wife Dorothy in November of 2011. Woods filed his appeal papers with the province's Court of Appeal on Friday.

Four grounds listed

Woods lists four grounds for appeal.

The decision is contrary to the law, and the evidence.
The judge should not have admitted text messages from Dorothy's cell phone.
The judge should not have admitted statements that Dorothy made to a close friend.
The judge favoured the prosecution when he gave his charge to the jury.
Woods is requesting a new trial, again with a judge and jury.

David Woods was charged with first-degree murder after his wife's body was discovered in a culvert near Blackstrap Lake in January, 2012. She had been bludgeoned and strangled and then wrapped in a plastic tarp.

She had gone missing that November.
