Mom, you sure you're not an FBI agent, what work you've done on this timeline of the case, great, you deserve a medal for that. I just cannot believe yet that there has been no arrest in this case. The person that committed this crime had to be smeared in blood from head to foot. And the fact that he left all the doors open and the trunk open, what kind of state was this person in. It seems like there was a lot of anger in this individual and it was sort of an overkill, like I'll show you who's going to do what and I'm in control here, that is the way I'm reading this individual. Was there anyone that Sonia was boss over, that she had to give instructions to in any of her jobs??? She may have been a dedicated worker and wanted things done orderly and someone may not have liked her position. The person definitely knew her and wanted to distance himself from the crime scene. But someone in that city knows who did this. Someone came home that night with blood on their hands and they must have been up for a long time cleaning up the blood they had on them and cleaning their clothing. It could have been a young person, the parents could have been away and they had the house to themselves at that time. I say it was someone from her neighbourhood. The person would have to be pretty strong to overcome Sonia and to lift a dead body. I think they should do another big news report on this  case and shake things up. Advise anyone that knows anything about this crime to come forward and also note that anyone that is witholding evidence on this crime, could be also charged in this crime. My prayers go out to the investigators and we pray that this case will be solved. :o :o :o :o :o

Thank you for the accolades
Capeheart and Jellybean.  I appreciate your feedback.

DebbieC - if you think we should start a new thread (starting from #675) full of FACTS, then please feel free to move my stuff on over.

About three weeks ago I was visiting an elderly friend in the Southlake Regional Hospital in Newmarket, Ontario.  They had very strict visiting hours so while I was waiting I went to a nearby FabricLand to pick up some supplies I needed for a project I was working on at home.  The store was absolutely huge and there were only two women working - one on cash and the other one was helping a bride-to-be pick out wedding dress material.  You can guess how long that was going to take!  I meandered around, pretty well got lost in every aisle and continuously muttered under my breath about how poorly organized everything was and how the heck could anyone find anything in this mess.  Believe it or not, I was simply looking for "terry cloth" to make a house coat.  I found two bolts of UGLY terry cloth, my choice was:  scratchy, dull white or boring, cement gray.  Exasperated, I came up for air.  There was a not-so-elderly customer standing nearby who looked very comfortable in these surroundings, so I asked her for some help, something stupid like, "Do you think these are the only colours terry cloth comes in?" came out of my mouth.

The woman came closer to me and with her soft hands she touched the fabric, shook her head and wrinkled-up her nose.  She spoke quietly at first and I had to strain to comprehend her thick European accent, she gave me some directions to a different fabric store, her favourite one.  She was very shy and withdrawn, in a very untrusting way, but she made eye contact with me when I very politely thanked her for taking the time to help me out.  I will never forget her eyes - they were so dark, so beautiful, but so very, very tired.  Those eyes have lived life and lost life.  Our eyes locked for a minute and instantly I said to her, "You're Sonia's mother, aren't you?"  A beautiful smile came to her face and she quietly and proudly said, "Yes, I am."  She put her hand on mine for a moment, and she said, "Sonia's mother, I will always be", then she walked away.

Needless to say, I have been haunted by this encounter for weeks now.  Everything happens for a reason, right?  Why me?  That was my first time going to Newmarket.  I didn't NEED to buy terry cloth THAT day.  What message is in there for ME?  What can I do?  I left the store empty-handed and with a heavy heart.

So, the analytical researcher in me went to work.  Just like ME not being able to find anything in that store that day, how could we expect our "supersleuths" to be able to find what they're looking for in our thread for Sonia?  I have taken all of the same information and organized it so it's easier to read.  If the reader would like clarification, research further, or verify sources - the link is right there for them.

This is my attempt to help Sonia's mom find what she needs.  Sonia's killer needs to be found.

Your story gave me goose bumps, Mom. I am also a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. That would also include the people that touch our lives, sometimes only briefly.

Perhaps you did get the message. It took a great deal of effort to organize this and put it together. Great work Mom.

Seeing as you're the one that's done all that work, what would you like to see here Mom? Do you want these facts to remain with the rest, or would you like to have a second thread just for facts? Input?

Thank you DebbieC.

Let's give Sonia a NEW thread.  Please and thank you.

I love speculation and I admire how creative people can be when thinking outside of the box, but this heinous perpetrator needs to get caught.  I am also going to start a campaign to drum up some interest from America's Most Wanted.  Anyone know where/how I can get that started?  This is obviously a bizarre crime - even the FBI from Quantico came up to participate.

Thanks again Debbie.

Please help us keep Sonia's memory alive and give her family some peace.  They deserve that.
Won't you please take a minute and send John Walsh at America's Most Wanted an email to ask him to come to Canada to review Sonia's case?

Please click on this link to be taken to a form:  http://www.amw.com/contact/

Once there, choose "OTHER", fill in your email address (twice) and then cut 'n paste this paragraph into your text box:

Please consider sending John Walsh and America's Most Wanted to help solve a Crime in Canada.
Sonia Varaschin lived in Orangeville, a small town just north of Toronto, Ontario.
A heinous perpetrator entered her home, killed her, used her car to dispose of her body, then returned the car to a nearby location.
The Behavior Analysis Unit from the FBI came for a 3-day Investigative Summit to work with our Local Police, Provincial Police and RCMP.
It's been 8 months since Sonia was killed.  Still nothing.  No leads.  No suspects.  No arrests.

Mom, you are saying you had no idea that Sonia's mom was working in that store??? I would say that you have a psychic ability that is unknown to yourself. What is the chance of that happening, surely devine intervention caused you to go into that fabric store that day. I will attempt to log in to John Walsh and fill out this letter with my e.mail. That is a great idea. We also should have 5th Estate or one of those programs and Dateline in the US is very good to do programs and they certainly have a longer segment. Also there is 48 hours and they reach an awful lot of people that watch their program.  :o :o :o :o :o I just sent my message to AMW and hope that they do see the messages and we should get some kind of a reply back in our private e.mails.

Thanks Capeheart for filling out the request - let's bombard them!

Sonia's mom wasn't WORKING at the store, she was in there shopping, just like me.  The two ladies who were working were extremely busy and I just asked this very kind lady (she looked like she knew her way around) if she knew if terry cloth came in any other colours.  I didn't recognize her until we made eye contact - and then it was like looking right into Sonia's soul.  I was very spooked.

Mom, your story brought tears to my eyes, and you have done such an amazing job compiling all of the facts.  I believe things happen for a reason too.

I have also submitted my E-mail to AMW.  We need to keep Sonia's story alive and in the public's eye.  Someone out there has to know something.  As a local and knowing where Sonia lived and where her car was found, I find it so hard to believe that no one saw a thing that night.

No one knows the pain until it happens to them Mom you were at the right place and the right time to come into contact with Mrs Varaschin she needs all of us to never forget Sonia this was meant to happen.

I did receive a reply from my e.mail to AMW form. It will have to be someone who possibly is in the police department or someone who has all the facts on this case and also a picture of Sonia. I don't know how to forward anyone my e.mail, it came in my private e.mails. These facts and picture and information has to be sent by mail and it has to be agreed to by Sonia's family. That is the information that was in my e.mail. So if any of you filled this form out, you will get the same replay as I did. Maybe someone that knows what to do here and that lives in the area of Sonia's mom, they could get all of this together. Maybe the police that are investigating the case would be more then willing to help with this request. :o :o :o :o :o

Thanks Capeheart and DebbieC, I received the following email from AMW today as well:

Quote
Dear Viewer:

Thank you for writing to America's Most Wanted.  AMW only accepts requests for stories or segments through the mail.  Please send your request to:

America's Most Wanted
P.O. Box Crime TV
Washington, DC 20016-9126

Please include a concise letter regarding the occurrence, a photograph of the victim and suspect, any newspaper clippings, police reports and the name and phone number of the detective investigating this case.  Please allow 19-24 weeks for a response from the producers.  All material sent to the producers will not be returned. If you cannot provide this information to the producers, please give this to the victim's family or the detective investigating this crime.

America’s Most Wanted does its best to apprehend criminals, locate missing children and solve even the toughest crimes. Our show provides the information, but it’s viewers like you who do the real job.

Please stay tuned for our next show on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 9PM EST.

Looks to me (I bolded it) like they ONLY want to receive requests through good ol' fashioned snail mail.  And so I shall....  I'll print out these newspaper articles and snail mail them to Washington along with the new lead detective's name and phone number.  I don't see anywhere in their email that says it MUST come from the family.

I think it is an important fact that Sonia's Dad had just washed her car for her when she visited her parents that day.   If he cleaned it inside and out, the only prints the cops should have found would be Sonia's and perhaps her Dad's..and anyone else, such as a gas jockey that can be accounted for.  Did the perp leave prints or wear gloves or wipe the car clean again....is my burning question.
My point, is that the car should have been clean, as clean as can be before this crime.

It's a SAD day!

Fox has cancelled America's Most Wanted! 1151 fugitives captured.
Revenue and $$ is low.
For the murderers, drug dealers and fraudsters, don't celebrate just yet!

Fox has cancelled its long-running weekly crime series and announced that they will scale it back to four quarterly two-hour specials next season. Though America's Most Wanted, which first aired in 1988, has certainly helped capture criminals (1,151 according to its website), tracking down revenue has proved more difficult in recent years.

Fox Entertainment Chief Kevin Reilly said the network has "not made money on the show in a quite a while. It wasn't particularly viable."
According to Reilly, America's Most Wanted host and executive producer John Walsh has been exploring the possibility of finding a different outlet that may continue to air the show.  Entertainment Weekly reports that "the main issue with the show wasn't its popularity, but the cost of production."

I sure am hoping this is soon solved, as it is very close to me, Sonia nursed one of my children at sick kids......It is getting very close to a year, wondering if the police are any closer to solving this than they were last august......Wondering if it is long enough for any of the DNA results to be back yet and one know?

Quite frankly, I care very much about Canada, our drug problems, our murders. Perhaps we should have our own "Candian Most Wanted" Now there is a positive thought - what do you think? Sorry, but Fox news is American, and they look after their own.  We desperately need a Canadian version of same!!
Besides, this is the Timeline of Sonia, and I am under the impression that it is to be left "fresh and clean" as a Timeline and not to post our thoughts on it. - or am I screwed up on this rule?
I believed by the rules agreed upon that we should post on Sonia's Personal Site, set up by Concerned.

Bella; I am never concerned about stalking - honestly.  I am an avid poster, so naturally people will post on various sites, and I may just have finished putting  in my 2 cents worth. lol.
No Bella, I am confused, as this timeline of events was set up to be just that, and the rules were that no one should post on it,  and the timeline is worth reading.

Sonia Varaschin has her own site for comments, ideas, etc.
Here is Sonia's personal site - do read it, and please post your ideas. All input is welcome! :) And the Timeline of Events is very helpful.

I saw on the Durham region TV station commercial that they are looking for ideas for programming.   Perhaps one of us that likes the camera could start up a crime show featuring unsolved crimes in Ontario.
I see Keith Morrison is doing it for Dateline....but the most expense on producing that show is probably his salary...;)   So, my point is I can't see it being that expensive to produce a show like that.     I am sure there is many crime victim's family members that would agree to be interviewed.   The worst thing for a victim is when people forget.  There is so many 'reality' shows out there, but this is real life, when someone's loved one goes missing, or is murdered.

re: ideas for programming.
The dateline program with Keith Morrison is of value. Keith is a Canadian, perhaps he could help even with some suggestions on how to get the ball rolling? His dateline show has a huge following so when they chose to do the stories they do, it has been well researched and is well known beforehand that there will be a target audience waiting. We don't have to repeat the test for prerequisites here or to reinvent the wheel, we are waiting!!! CBC where are you??? Perhaps someone could try contacting him?

That is a good starting point sweetnurse.
http://investigationdiscovery.ca/showlist.aspx (http://investigationdiscovery.ca/showlist.aspx)

There are many "angles" that could be persued in almost any case. Finding the right one and getting it to the right place is almost like target marketing. I'm sure there is something here that could be posed in someway that one of these shows would be interested in.

Perhaps the same rules would apply to investiation discovery as it was to Most Wanted.  Firstly, if it is an active investigation, law enforcement would have to give their permission, and if the victim has family, they would also have to give their permission.  This makes sense to me. But yes, we certainly could use a Canadian Weekly program, and it would have a terrific  following that is for sure. It could also include Most wanted, as well as unsolved murders and missing people. I think CTV would be open to something like that as well.

I agree that timelines can be very helpful. Thanks to our member 'Mom' for going to the time and effort to create this one for the murder of Sonia Varaschin.

*Global News is sometimes good at publishing timelines on some of the stories they carry. Two cases that come to mind where timelines were done by Global are the Amber Kirwan case and the McCann case. Both of those are posted on their respective threads.

I am hoping that the timeline of Events (of which I am posting on -lol  is left as timeline. Otherwise we may just continue posting (regular posting) in it. It really doesn't matter I suppose - but would it further confuse, and detract from the pure timeline of events?
I'm afraid that the timeline would just continue on with regular postings etc. Do we want that? - or do we not want that?
I agree with D1, that the timeline should be used for updated links, such as the last video re search on her Anniversary - without comment
These comments could be on Part 2, referring to the link in the timeline.
That way the Timline, to my mind, would be a reference library of known announcements by LE.
A Headline with instructions for the Timeline, and a referral to Thread #2 would assist in this.
And if you so desire, then removal of this comment and others would be warranted - to clean them out.
JB
I have a feeling that this case may take some time to solve, so the cleaner the Timeline is kept might be best?

debbiec: Yes it will still be timeline of events - but people may just continue on posting theories etc.
Older posters would know the difference, but newer posters would not know.
Or does it not matter?
I'm easy.

Well it gets kind of confusing and complicated if we put too many rules here. We may not get someone giving information just by posting a comment. I'm for things the way they are now. Like myself, I don't know how to add links and so on and no matter how many times someone tells me, it doesn't work out. So I'm satisfied for those who are smarter at the computer than I am, go for it. And Mom's postings are fantastic and I'm sure very helpful to the police, if they so wanted to look in on our comments. :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I'm in favour of the timeline being gutted of commentary (aside from useful explanations, theories, etc.).  This post included, perhaps minus some of the pictures attached by request.

This is a link to a map with the locations of Sonia's home, the place where Sonia's body was found, and where her car was later found. Click the colored icons on the left to zoom in on each or to look around the area.

What about Cold Case on A&E. Maybe there is a way to contact Bill Kurtis and get her story out there.
