The daughter of a popular Vancouver restaurateur made an impassioned plea Thursday for help in finding her father, who has been missing for 45 days.
Jon-Michael Preece, who until early November owned the Cafe de Paris on Denman Street, has not been seen since 8 p.m. on Nov. 30, when he left the Yaletown apartment he shared with his girlfriend.
"Please, if you have any information, let us know -- because I know there has to be somebody out there [who] knows something," said Ariana Preece, speaking to reporters outside the condo building at 1010 Pacific Blvd. where her dad lived.
The 54-year-old did not return home that night as expected, and has not been seen since.
"It's so out of character, and I know he would never do this out of choice to me and my brother," she said, referring to her 10-year-old sibling.
Ariana reported her dad missing to police on Dec. 1, and the family hired private investigators Arbor Investigations to help trace Preece.
"It's an open and active investigation," Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness said Thursday. "There is no indication that foul play is involved."
Preece, who moved to Vancouver from Los Angeles 16 years ago, worked in the film industry and became owner of the well-known French restaurant in 2003.
"My dad was a really big figure in the community in Vancouver because of the restaurant and film industry," said Ariana, 22. "And I just think somebody had to have seen him the night he left. I think somebody must have some information. That's why we wanted it out in the public."
Ariana said her dad was "extremely intelligent and very funny and very artsy and very eccentric. He was my best friend."
Her dad was diagnosed with stomach and colon cancer in the summer of 2007, she said.
"He'd been tired and less energetic than usual [of late]. But he was just like a normal person [energy-wise], because he was very energetic. He never seemed depressed or suicidal to me."
Arbor investigators continue to work on the case.
"It's our top priority to bring him home," said Arbor's Kari-Lyn Twidale.
Jon-Michael Preece is five feet 10 inches and 120 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.
