On June 23, 2002 RCMP received a call reporting a missing person in the Village of Makinak. Turnbull was last seen on June 22, 2002 at approximately 8:00 pm by a home care worker and was last spoken to on the phone by his son at approximately 10:00 pm that same day. The home care worker arrived at approximately 9:00 am on June 23, 2002 and noticed at that time Turnbull was not in his residence. At approximately 10:00 am the family began to search in and around the area Turnbull suffers from mild dementia and has wandered off before. Volunteers continued to search for Turnbull until June 26, 2002 at which point the search was called off. George Turnbull was not seen again.

Last seen wearing a blue cloth hat, blue denim pants, blue and pink shirt.
