********************************************************
Nina Courtepatte, who was slain by a group of teens and two adults, is fighting back. A strong woman, this lady is working with other families of slain kids. I signed her petition to up the penalty's for young offenders involved in violent crimes

Laboucan was charged and sent to jail for I think life. He was 19 at the time. Briscoe was mid thirties. He got off!!!! Scott free, this sucker got off, crazy, cruel, and unbelieveable. Now there are about three teens coming up, will have to see what happens then. Nina was 13, when she and a friend lured from West Ed Mall, to go to a bush party..

She ended up on a golf course, after being brutally raped, and beaten with a wrench, and kicked, and other girls were hurting her also. Jealosy? After the slaying, Laboucan wanted to hunt another, for the adrenalin rush. Nina's friend stayed with them, out of fear, Peacha told me.

WHY was Briscoe let go? Why did he keep these kids, and not go to authorities right away? It doesn't make sence at all. I support Peacha ALL THE WAY!

PS It was at the "Finding Dawn" film, where we met the 3 stw's who appeared either wired, or scared. They said they were NOT allowed to sign any petition. One was crying as she fled. They were looking around, scared, by one of the "help the stws' groups.I wonder if any of them were used in the drug testing for the police. Unpaid, had to buy their own drugs, and no pay, yeah right.!!!

I remember taking part in a smoking survey, with tons of questions, took thirty minutes, and we were paid cash. $35.00 dollars. This at an inner city drop in.I was volunteering.

YOUNG OFFENDER TO BE TRIED AS AN ADULT

Nina Courtepatte. to get some justice, but not enough! Briscoe is still OUT walking around, and got nothing for this crime.!!!

 By TONY BLAIS, COURT BUREAU

A young woman convicted of manslaughter in the golf course sex slaying of 13-year-old Nina Courtepatte will be sentenced as an adult, a judge ruled yesterday.

The decision pleased Courtepatte's mother, who called it a "good day," and prompted her to say she hopes the 20-year-old killer gets slapped with a life sentence.

"It's (a good day) because (now) she can't get away with it and she thought that she could," said Peacha Atkinson.

"Now she's going to have a lot of years to think about it," said Atkinson, adding a long sentence is needed because the woman only has regrets about her own situation.

"No remorse. No nothing," she said. "Nothing can be done with her."

The outspoken victims' advocate also said she plans to bring a picture of Nina to today's sentencing hearing.

"To show her what she's done to such a beautiful girl and the pain that she has caused the family," said Atkinson.

Court of Queen's Bench Justice June Ross ruled a maximum three-year sentence under the Youth Criminal Justice Act would not adequately hold the woman accountable for her role in the April 3, 2005, rape-killing.

Ross also agreed with the evidence of a psychiatrist who said the woman cannot be rehabilitated enough in three years to protect society from her reoffending.

The woman, who cannot be identified because she was 17 at the time of the slaying, cried as the ruling was made.

Ross said the manslaughter conviction was at the high end of the scale, calling it a "near-murder," and noted Nina was an "innocent" and "defenceless" victim. "The victim had done nothing whatsoever to provoke an attack," said Ross. The judge also noted it was not so much the killing of Nina that "shocked" the community, but its planning.

Court has heard Courtepatte was raped twice and beaten to death with a wrench and a sledgehammer after being targeted as the "chosen one" and lured from West Edmonton Mall to a golf course west of the city on the pretense of going to a bush party.

"There is a huge moral culpability in being a willing participant in such a plan," said Ross.

At the time of conviction, Ross found the woman knew of the plan to kidnap and kill a victim, had helped carry out the kidnapping, had been armed, had hit Nina with a wrench - thereby initiating the group assault - and held Nina's hands down while she was raped.

A psychiatrist earlier testified the woman poses a high risk to re-offend and shows little remorse and little empathy for the victim. She was also diagnosed as having a conduct disorder and fetal alcohol spectral disorder.

Victim impact statements will be heard today followed by arguments on sentence length.

The woman is also being sentenced on charges of being a party to kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault.

I just hope the judge does not give her time served. I understand they give 2 for 1 credit in jail for some reason for time spent waiting for trial. This is one sick woman and needs to spend time in prison. Even then, she peobably won't ever change.

She's borderline now, she will develop into a full-blown sexual sadistic psychopath. In jail for sure. She should get some kind of protective custody I imagine. She's like holmolka at 17 - 17 and twisted.

What's the minimum on manslaughter at the "top-end - near murder?"

I'm glad that this judge shows more common sense than the one that let Briscoe walk. This judge said that "There is a huge moral culpability in being a willing participant in such a plan". What about Briscoe who was 36 years old at the time? I don't understand why this is manslaughter at all even if it is on the high end of the scale.  I Thought that premeditated murder (which they have clearly said it was) was first degree. I am so glad that this horrible excuse for a human being will go to jail and not just for a couple years. The fact that she shows no remorse and is only sorry for herself makes me think she will be exactly where she belongs.

Nina's Mom Peacha is a fighter for sure. I helped her long ago at a petition signing to get Briscoe retried, as well as having the juvinile tried as adults. What happened to her daughter, is something no mother, family should have to face.

Plus the fact of letting Briscoe go! >:( >:( That sicko drove the car, knew where to go, was at the mall, the act was already planned, and they found the "chosen one".He held her down, told her to shut up, and does not deserve to be walking.

Yes I thougtt the same, premeditated murder. It seems unresonable to convict them of manslughter and to let one guy off.

the judge said the low sentence because bird was a "first time offender" with a bad childhood. So that seems to me like life is not for people who kill the first time and had a bad childhood. 9 more years, she'll be out in 6. But, hey, she only killed the one time.

I don't feel this is an appropriate sentence for what really should have been tried as first degree murder (totally premeditated). Just another soft judge with too many excuses for the perpetrator. So I guess you only get a tough sentence if you come from a good background and you've killed more than once?

Let's be honest here. The reason why these judges are so soft on the criminals, was becasue the victim in there judgement was no one important.

NO WAY any of these murderes get such a low sentence if this was a brain surgeon, another judge, a teacher or even just a middle class stay at home mom. Becasue the victim was from a low rent area, the judge punished accordingly.

This is mega horrible!!!!!
