I remember Marie very well, she was my patient, I used to clean her teeth, along with other members of her family.  Marie was a lovely girl with a very sincere smile.  Always cheerful when coming to see me.  I was very happy to see renew interest in this case.  It has been so many years, but, I have never forgotten that terrible day.

Hi a_jensen99, Thank you for posting.

I hope you can provide us with more information regarding Marie such as whether the date she was found is the same as the date she was missing. Was there ever a suspect, a composite, vehicle description or other suspicions?

GOUDREAU
Date:31-Jul-2008
Location:

Police knew something was wrong when they found 17 year old Marie Goudreau?s car abandoned on a rural road (RR #244, known in 2008 as Ellerslie Road) on August 2nd 1976. Marie had left a friends house in Edmonton at about 10:30 that night, but she never made it home.

Goudreau was driving a blue, 1972 Plymouth Cricket. Her car was found running with the headlights still on. The driver?s side door was open with the window partly rolled down and her purse containing twenty dollars was left undisturbed on the front seat.

Two days later, Miss Goudreau?s nude body was found in a water filled ditch near Devon (1.7 miles north of Devon). She had been strangled.

In 1976, Marie was working at a coffee shop in Southgate Mall. She always drove the same route home to Beaumont and wasn?t far from home when she went missing. After 32 years, police still need the public to help them piece together what happened that night.

If you know anything about the 32 year old unsolved homicide of Marie Goudreau, please call Crime Stoppers Anonymously at: 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  You can also submit your tip online at www.tipsubmit.com.

Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call trace, caller ID or tape any calls.

maybe people are too quick to pull over and stop their car..... no maybes about it.... it is long past time for people to realize it is not safe to stop your car in secluded places .... and unless you've robbed a bank, police shouldn't expect you to ... they should allow you to reach a public area where you feel safe. imho.

I have driven this road, and in 1976 it was just gravel . In Aug it would have been fairly dark at 10:30 pm. The road was narrow and winding. Farm houses were fairly far apart, although I would not say ther were any secluded areas, mostly open farmers fields.

I would not think a 17 year old would stop along here unless it was for someone she knew, OR someone she thought she could trust.

Wonder how she ended up so far away? Must have been someone on the road who got her to stop and then took her. I'd bet someone she knew.

Solvy, I'm also in Edmonton and remember this case fairly well.  Didn't Marie's family live outside of Edmonton and this was the road home?

I've never thought of her as the victim of a serial killer.  Like you, I'm relatively certain she stopped for someone she knew.

Ellerslie Road was where she was last seen so I think we should move this to Edmonton thread instead. I had no information at the time and she was recovered in Devon but last seen in Edmonton (Ellerslie in 1976 was separate town though)

Thank you for the information

Hi there,
I can actually tell you that my family and I drove past the scene of the crime on the way home from my grandparents that night. My father actually stopped our truck and got out to see if anybody was around and called out etc to no avail. After her body was discovered my father contacted the RCMP and he was put under hypnosis to see if he could remember anything about either of the cars that were parked along the road that night. I am not sure what all came about while under hypnosis and my father passed away the following winter and was not able to assist any further with the investigation. I would have to say that he gave them at least some pertinent information, but am unaware as to what. I can only pray that this be solved so that her family can put her to proper rest in their hearts.

There are so many cases within the zones where a serial killer might have been active around that time. IE the Transcanada killer so named by crimezzz

What is similar to many is the victim was last seen at work, usually a bar, pub, coffee shop. Otherwise they were last seen as a patron at some of these places. Makes me think the killer picks his victim, follows his victim and somehow tricks his victim to either riding with him or cuts them off somehow.

There are signs that say to me, there was a serial killer in Edmonton/Calgary area at that time, a common thread that many victims were last seen in a public eatery of some kind. I would also speculate that the killer may have been handsome and charming at that time, perhaps a regular customer. Perhaps someone who had followed Marie many times and knew her routine. Many killers like that can spend months plotting, following, stalking, until the time is just right.

New info on this case I havent seen before. Taken from  http://officialcoldcaseinvestigations.com/showthread.php?p=50846

McAstocker was also reportedly the prime suspect in the 1976 murder of an Edmonton teenager, Marie Judy Goudreau, 17, who disappeared Aug. 2, 1976 on the way home to her family's farm on the edge of Edmonton. Her body was found two days later near Devon, southwest of Edmonton.
MacLean and Goudreau were both strangled and sexually assaulted. McAstocker had been working for an Edmonton-based moving company and was in Calgary at the time MacLean was killed.
